"PlayStation Now is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the dominant service by some margin, generate 52 per cent of venue. This is likely due to the sheer install base of the PlayStation 4, which stands at over 86m units sold since its November 2013 launch. Second place - by some way - is EA Access on Xbox One with a 16 per cent slice of the pie, while Xbox Game Pass claims 15 per cent of the sector's cash."

"Though the subscription model clearly works for the video games space, it certainly raises questions over how we judge the success of individual games. For example, Microsoft has announced positive launches for Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2 and Forza Horizon 4 with some impressive early player figures, but these titles are part of its Xbox Game Pass and Play Anywhere schemes, making it less obvious how many people have actually splashed the cash on these titles. In addition, player figures don't mean a huge amount when someone could have logged in to Rare's pirate romp once and never gone back."

Considering the way both online services are discussed here I found these stats surprising.

Holy shit , what. That's kind of wild , if Sony contiunes to improve that service they have something really great on their hands

The strange thing here is that PS Now is not available in most countries but Game Pass is. Although Xbox doesn't have much of a presence in countries where PS Now is unavailable so it probably makes sense.

the terrible thing about this is Sony will look at this as great revenue and then force users to use this service instead of including Backwards compatibility on the ps5

This is suprising as I know people that have both and none of them are even thinking of touchinging PSNow but have a year + of game pass. Good for sony I guess?

I mean, it exists since 2014, of course it has a bigger audience.

It surprises me, nevertheless, that it has so many users.

I'm guessing this figure is prior to game downloads being implemented into the service as well, which makes things even more impressive.

Thats really surprising

Mainly because psnow if streaming based, which makes people like me with unreliable internet to steer away from it

Although they seem to be moving towards downloads which is great

Oh wow that's surprising, I assumed it was kind of a failure, and isn't it also $20 a month? That's super fucking impressive.

I thought the service was good when I did the trial but couldn't justify the $20 a month given the game library (this was a few years ago, I'm sure it's improved)

Which is funny considering how many people said it was irrelevant to the discussion when MS and Google announced their streaming projects.

Interesting considering so many people on this forum operated under the impression that PS Now wasn't a popular service but it somehow is the main driver of streaming revenue.

Typical ResetEra bubble being proven wrong which is on-brand I guess.

I don't think Microsoft has released numbers for Game Pass. Where are they getting these numbers?

- More Expensive

- More PS4's, by like 3-1

Hardly unexpected/surprising.

I am curious how they got GamePass numbers though, MS doesn't release those.

ZhugeEX Any insight here?

Good to hear some good news about Sony's streaming service. For some reason it gets dismissed.

Many on Era out of touch with gaming reality again I see. On here you'd think Game Pass was the be all end all, and PS Now an irrelevant throwaway.

Era bubble everyone. I suspected it was doing just fine since Sony kept supporting it, they like to drop things asap when it doesn't do too hot.

I never heard of anyone using PS Now personally unlike Gamepass.
It's actually not that bad , I wasn't a fan of the idea at all but I played through the whole god of war series before the new one, just streaming them to my PS4 and I had a couple hiccups total playing through and my internet is mediocre. And I think you can download some games now.

Like I was saying before if they can tigthen up the service a bit and offer more PS4 games for download , they have something really cool

Man, having tried both this seems... incomprehensible. Then again, a look at a top 40 or typical box office results reflects the same market dynamics at work. Large swaths of people can consistently pay for garbage, nothing new.

Nice find, OP, that's a really interesting tidbit to mull over when considering each platform's strengths and what next gen might look like.

even regular EA Access has more subs still, I suspect Access premier to pass game pass within the year then numbers wise, its only $100 and provides more value on terms of a sub service.

Gamepass gives you the basic tier editions of microsofts output, while Access premier gives you the highest tier of all the versions available. So when anthem comes out access premier folks get a week to the full game no limits, plus all the extra content with the sub.

If Access Premier was on the xbox too it would be a killer combo with GamePass

Well if you listen only ERA xbox one x is the best selling hardware on the market and everybody have bought one for RDR2, but it's an alternate reality, the vast majority of the market doesn't even use a gaming forum...

How is it being more expensive a plus in its favour?

These results are absolutely very surprising.
What don't you get?

More expensive = more revenue.

Not a plus, but if it costs more its gonna bring in more money.

10 x 20$ > 10 x 10$. Riggghhhttttt?

We went through this in the NPD thread discussing Xbox One X's vs Xbox One S's lol

The simple fact that MS is throwing 3 months of game pass in loads of bundle while Sony isn't was the perfect indicator of this data.

Maybe he was thinking this was about how many users these services have. Not about revenue

I was also thinking like that first

what surprises me if these stats are true, is Sony not talking more about it. They've allowed MS to talk about game pass, and now streaming and start to take the space around this area which doesn't match up to the reality.

"Why Sony is not allowing EA Access on their console?"

Here it is.
Exactly, especially when many of us predicted all they had to do was offer downloads for PSNow to compete more directly with Game Pass.

It would be nice to have it tho, I used EAAccess alot when I first got a One S, but like with other decisions I understand why Sony didn't have it.

WHAT THE FUCK?

The way people talked about it I would think it was a huge failure, especially compared to Game Pass. I wonder how many subscribers it has?

I'm really surprised by that. Partly cos Game pass gets talked up and about a lot more, partly cos I find Game pass much more impressive than PS Now.

Considering how far behind the other subscription services PS Now is and the cost, this isn't a good thing.

Surprised by the numbers. And as already noted: these numbers are just prior to PS.Now subscription opening up for direct-downloads of PS4 titles.

Time to release this in Scandinavia so I can try it out. My experience with Geforce Now was solid (though Geforce have an unrealistic price model).

Just got the 7 day free trial and boy have they improved the service a lot.

Streaming and being able to exit stream and browse other games select downloadable game and go back to streaming game in an instant, new UI, lower input lag and latency, almost 700 games available, downloaded all PS2 classics. Pretty good service overall.
