Bernie Sanders: White People Uncomfortable About Voting for Black Candidates Not Necessarily Racist

Holy shit, I can't believe I used to heavily support this guy back in 2016. Guess everyone else was right when they told me I was just a dumb, naive teenager.

I'm sorry, but I can't find much difference between racism and diet racism. People who don't vote for black people because they're black are absolutely racist. These people shouldn't be coddled by soft words. I get what Bernie is trying to say, but the way he phrased it is tone deaf at best. The way it's phrased sounds almost like he's putting the onus on black people to be more appealing to white people, when they've been dealing with enough shit already.
That's not a good way to understand it. It isn't a distinction of bad/worse, bias and ideological racism mean two different things.
I actually think in terms of the negative effects felt by people of color, bias is a MUCH bigger problem than actual ideological racism and white supremacy, just because it's a lot more prevalent and it can much more easily infiltrate institutional structures.
The reason that distinction is important is just because, unlike ideological racists who are cognizant of their beliefs, people with bias usually don't realize they're biased. They think they're hiring/voting/judging based on merit and it just so happens that 3/4 of the time the white person is more deserving. They don't think of themselves as racists, and if you want to reach them, and build the kind of coalition that wins election, you can't just label 80% of the population (and it is 80% of the goddamn population) as "racists who need to fuck right off." You just can't be that direct about it.
I'd love to live in a world where we could tell it like it is 100% of the time, but that world isn't the world of politics, at least.
I've read most of the thread so apologize if this was addressed and I missed it but the point about it being the first time they had the possibility of voting for a black person, does that even apply? Is he including primaries like his ass lost in as well? Because if so, not to mention two elections with Obama, I guarantee this wasn't the first time these people had the chance to vote for a black candidate. I already checked and saw that Florida had a black candidate for governor in the last 16 years. Shut the fuck up Bernie!

Bernie's wrong here. He's very much a Vermont politician. I think he's tried, but he doesn't quite get it, still. I'll still vote for him over many other politicians, but he's always had a blond spot with the racism in much of America. Most of America is racist, but that's too controversial for anyone to say, tbh.
Bernie has always been extremely hesitant calling out racists, giving them every benefit of the doubt, and almost pandering to them. As if he just doesn't want to upset them because he thinks he had a chance to get their support. Always thought he was a coward in this area, which is what turned me off from him a long time ago. He's been pretty consistent with this behaviour. During the last election, Clinton called this shit out a more more clearly then he ever did.
Those type of people are still racist whether they think it or not. No excusing Bernie on this, If he had said "those who think they're not racist but are scared of a black man in office". That's something he could have said and it be okay if he expanded on it as still racist but no way around what he said. Sorry Bernie, you won't be the 2020 candidate

This was sold under the promise of free healthcare by the US Govt. By 1940, they found that Penicillin could cure Syphilis yet nobody received treatment.....

willie lynch is iffy, but honestly if he was real, to say that people would be eager and open to study the real nefarious design behind the white slave master mentality is being really optimistic.
I have always heard that Willie Lynch is an apocryphal story based on multiple people, and more like a Keyser Soze type legend than a historical person that can be pinned down and identified.
Just like the legendary Dixie plantation with it's kind master and happy slaves.
edit: actually the dixie legend I have in mind is an older legend of a kind slave master who was more like a father to his slaves than an owner (ironic since masters would use black women as sex slaves and would often father and sell off the offspring of rape, though this legend was meant unironically, ahem), and his slaves were loyal and prosperous and this likely never happened but was a popular trope in early America. might even have come from the old New Amsterdam colony days.

I always forget about the '80s MOVE bombing because it seems so absurd the gov't would legit drop bombs on its own citizens and just let the resulting fire do whatever while also trying to shoot people fleeing from the fire. And every time I'm reminded of it I'm just like, fuck this shithole country and all the racist shit it's done and is built upon and continues today but tries to deny. Ugh!

Don't forget that the Tulsa race massacre and similar events partially stemmed from black men coming back from fighting in World War 1 (and kicking major ass) with a new sense of self-actualization and defense. Building new towns and investing in their own economies in southern settlements...at the same time the Klan was resurging.

Ever notice how there's a slow and oddly calculated rollout of diverse representation in movies, comics, games and TV? It's because of the continuum (and maybe a little bit due to, I dunno, the perceived and/or truthful mindset of mainstream audiences). Here is the continuum of how diversity is dictated to roll out in American media:
First white men >>> White women >>> Male ethnic minorities >>> White lesbians>>> White bisexual men >>> White gay men >>> Women ethnic minorities >>> the rest of LGBTQ...etc white and ethnic minorities.
It's a slow 9-part rollout, and right now we're still pretty much at part three. Notice how Star Wars and Marvel just started adding white women protagonists and men of color in prominent roles. Supporting characters are all across the spectrum, but for lead characters in popular movies we are just not there yet, it's too much. And even when an indie film features protagonists who are within the other half of the continuum, or they are featured in a supporting role in a major film, there is a compulsion for movies to get made as a response to neutralize the burn every once in a while and quell the discomfort it might cause. That's why a Moonlight for white dudes (Boy Erased) is coming out soon. Ok, that might be a tad reductive of the film, but it's definitely how it's being marketed.
Anywho, this step-by-step process is just a visual representation of how progress tends to be rolled out in this country as a reaction to the attitudes of many Americans and is what Bernie Sanders seems to be alluding to in that article.
Why he is suggesting they aren't racist for feeling that discomfort is the fucking bizarre part. The only explanation I can think of is that he's either a) speaking to people who might be racists but willing to change and not be racists or b) trying to quell the bigoted voters into voting against their own interests, which is actually SMART. Leftists politicians should be getting better at playing ball via trying to reach as many people possible. That's how Trump won. Cast as wide a net as possible via understanding the mindset of a huge portion of this country (morons) only then get the votes by running as a moderate voice of reason speaking to anyone with a conscience, including people who might be conservatives. THEN once elected quietly implement progressive policies into law.
That said, what he said in that article some dumb shit, regardless of why he said it and it's going to alienate many who would potentially vote for him.
