I'm shocked at the love of Amonkhet.

Probably the drabbest art on cards they've done in the modern art design era of Magic. Brown desert and brown skies on half the cards. It's the 360/PS3 generation of Magic card art.

Amonkeht was worth it for the sweet invocation art.... well a couple of them...

Amonkhet is actually one of my favorite blocks in past few years, setting and mechanics. I just dig Egyptian shit I think. But the pristine pyramids and giant, animal-headed God's, mummies and jackals and sand... that's the good stuff.

I feel like all of their settings in the two-block era, new and return, were hamstrung by some weird mechanical choices and the Planeswalker focused storytelling. Zendikar and Innistrad had the Eldrazi stuff weighing them down, Kaladesh and Amonkhet felt like backgrounds for the Gatewatch adventures, and Ixalan just didn't click.

Looking forward to a return for all of them. Dominaria and Ravnica 3.0 have both struck a much better balance between story, setting, and design.

I also loved Amonkhet

I think there hasn't been a setting I actively disliked in ages though. Like, Alara's blurriness was a problem with that block and I don't like the turn Zendikar took but aside from that they're creative game has been incredibly on point

There needs to be a 10 year no takesies backsies rule for returning to a plane. We got an infinite multiverse to explore, i don't need to head right back to kaladesh to make sure the new government is covering pia's healthcare or whatever.

Theros return would be cool 'cause we'd probably get Elspeth back. No way she stays dead. Maybe spin that into a return to Alara, she goes back to find Bant on the ropes after the merging.

If you look at her Mythic Edition artwork they are definitely hinting at her return. I wouldn't be surprised to see her return in the next "block." Maybe it will be a return to Theros or something. Hopefully it is titled completely different.

Wherever your thoughts on Amonkhet, that trailer is dope as hell.

Got back into the game about 6 months ago at this point. Had been playing with a co-worker weekly and hitting up FNMs with him. Found out recently this dude has some really bad opinions (policial) and it has really tainted the experience for me. Think it might be time for me to fully commit to Arena.

Bound and Bonded

Nicky Drayden

A Selesnyan wurmcaller confronts the mistakes of his past with a little help from his friends.

* This is the last story until December.
* Terrik is a Selesnya elf wurmcaller that accidentally collapsed an Orzhov building a while ago, killing 20 construction workers, and he's now unemployed. He's couch surfing with his friends.
* He goes to an Orzhov orphanage, to donate money to the children of the victims, but he gets recognized. One of the girls, Bazda, comes to his defense.
* She asks if he keeps coming because he's a friendless creeper, and he insists he's neither.
* She asks if he thinks he can bring her parents back. He says they're in a better place, but she points out they're in an Orzhov district, so she knows they aren't. Their spirits are being forced to pay off their debts, and they're too busy to visit her.
* While insisting he has friends, he mentions one is an expert on artifacts, so Bazda asks to have her to check something her parents gave her before they died. Terrik returns home, and Bazda sneaks after him.
* The artifact is part of a larger Izzet machine from long ago.
* Terrik discovers his friends are moving away, and proposes they search under the construction site for the rest of the Izzet artifact as one last adventure. They agree.

* Terrik summons a young wurm, which they use to tunnel under the building. They reach an Orzhov chamber, but the wurm gets scared and leaves them.
* He learns that his friends are leaving because they didn't want to see him anymore.
* They find an Orzhov pontiff ordering spirits and tortured wurms to dig up the Izzet machine. They're discovered and forced into contracts.
* Terrik tears up the contracts, but with his staff, the pontiff restores them and adds to their debt.
* Two of the spirits are Bazda's parents.
* He gets one of them to tell the pontiff that he jumped to his death. When he tries to summon his spirit to pay off the debt, Terrik pushes him down the hole. However, a thrull with him jumps down too, and the pontiff is able to sacrifice him to regenerate himself.
* Terrik restores the machine, which can turn copper coins to gold, and uses that to pay off everyone's debt, ending their contracts. Then, he removes Bazda's part of the machine, so the pontiff can't use it.
* Bazda is reunited with her dead parents, and Terrik and his friends are closer together, even if he's unsure what the future will bring for them.

This story was kind of weak, to be honest.

It's a pretty stupid story, but stories about Ravnica are always going to be stupid. It's a theme park backdrop for a story about something else, the story of the plane itself is actually really dumb.

These side stories are boring. They don't even have smugJace
I seriously haven't even clicked on one to read them and I read all of the others before this. I bitched a lot about some of the poor writing and awful plot choices they made but wow -- what a monkey's paw wish granting that things changed the way they did.

I made a Lich Tribal deck that would be an absolute ton of fun to play if every dumb motherfucker I match against didn't spend thirty minutes mousing back and forth between Underrealm Lich and Lich's Mastery trying to think their way out of a literally unwinnable game.

People are playing top-tier Pro Tour decks like white-red aggro on NORMAL play mode versus my jank shit? This matchmaking is so shit. Paper is better than this.

They need to just do hidden elo based matchmaking or something. The deck composition idea (are they even still doing that?) was cute in theory, but in practice this isn't working.

I mean, it also depends on time of day. I played a half dozen matches just now and it seemed like everyone was on starter decks while I was playing U-Tempo. It could be a situation where there are just few people playing.

Lots of Merfolk on ladder, that's for sure. Easier to face off against than PT/GP net decks at the least.

I don't know, there's something to be said for how obviously people don't know how to play even the simple net decks.

Like white weenie players blocking a 2/2 with an Adanto Vanguard and paying 4 life to make it indestructible, or just generally seeing a dude who's being attacked by 50 1/1 tokens actually try to arrange blockers for some absurd reason, or the sheer volume of Izzet Drakes players who don't seem to realize the line "Arclight Phoenix cannot block" does not appear anywhere on that card.

Dude we casted three cards to getting back that Phoenix, it's not like our deck is built around doing it again and again.

I swear I just had a game where was hellbent with a 6/6 Marwyn and a Carnage Tyrant in play, and my opponent recurred two Phoenixes from the graveyard. "Shit," I say to myself, "I'm going to have to risk it for the biscuit on this one I guess."

... and then he just turns them both sideways with me sitting on 18 life. Well okay then.

Spoiler week is here! First card!

Less than the price of a pack, but I'm still happy to see any reprint in the rare slot that's not a total dud.

Edit: We also have Martyr of Sands, currently a $2 common.

Are these all Arena situations?

Yeah. The netdecks are a bit more... netdeck-y on Arena, in some part due to the fact there are probably (way) more new players on it, but also likely due to the way the Wildcards (and inability to purchase cheap singles) nudges the economy; it's in the best interests of a new player to just spend all their Wildcards building a known-good deck, even if they have no clue how it works.

The most shocking thing so far is that Squee is a $4 card. I feel like it's been reprinted a billion times and sees no play anywhere anymore

People are saying Gamble, Fecundity, and Demonic Tutor are likely unused art for Ixalan masterpieces. Shame that one is by Terese Nielson.

I'm told that Fire // Ice at common is pretty big for Pauper.

MaRo explains that Weatherlight crew legendary cards. I don't think I heard before that Ertai was portrayed as sassy so that later in the story, the crew would be sent to the future where he was old and wise, or that Squee's card was just meant to show he was annoying, not Immortal.

The goblin on Gamble is the same one as on Makeshift Munitions.
Fecundity is difficult to tell. It's a jungle with a skull.
Demonic Tutor of course has the pirate and the Demon on it looks very similar to the demon on Dark Nourishment.
