why does it bother you to see them in public
why does it bother you to see them in public
Are...
It's fine; don't worry about me.I feel sorry for the furries on here. Alot of the members are so embarrassingly hostile towards a group that has done nothing to them.
That's why it's becoming acceptable lol. If this started in the Black community there would already be legislation being passed, just like the criminalization of saggy jeans in some Southern localities.
It's a pride parade, man. People wear costumes. It's a thing.Give me a break. Why else would they dress like that if not for attention? Why do furries all of the sudden need to be some special sexual identity? Why can't it remain in fandom circles where it came from?
Are...
Are you NOT supposed to gather attention at a Pride Parade?????????
Yeah another question I have is why do I in my mind equate Sonic the hedgehog with furries? Is it baseless?
So LGBT furries do not belong in an LGBT event that specifically advocates dressing in evocative ways for attention and self-expression? What is even happening right now?
Fuck oooooooooooff, lolI think I explained why.
Sure, if you belong there and not at some con somewhere

...I think that pretty much says all that needs to be said honestly. Good to know you've got such strong convictions over who is and isn't welcome at a pride parade...
Got a friend whose a very open furry who invited me and two of our other mutual friends to do just that for the exact reason of showing us what it's like. The con was... different, to say the least, but fun. Very welcoming community. Not something I'd ever go back to on my own, but if someone invited me along again, I wouldn't say no. Give it a shot if you get the chance.Would love to go to a gathering one day just out of pure curiosity, to understand that is, not to galk. Live and let live. Wouldn't want to dress up though and I hear the community is very tight-knit and can be a tad non-inclusive?

You're only allowed to wear a rainbow thong and a rainbow mask with a rainbow cape, and finally a rainbow tattoo saying "GAYMAN" on your chest. That is the ONLY acceptable attire don't you DARE show up in khakisimagine gatekeeping at a gay pride parade, a parade thats already filled with people in costumes
No offense, but that exact behavior is bringing up some bad memories of when I was a kid of people pointing fingers at anything that wasn't white and saying basically the same damned thing.
It's a bigoted opinion. Everyone has a right to live their life as they see fit, so long as it doesn't harm another individual. So that then bears to mind the question...why the hell does it wound you so much and why on earth does it make you so damned uncomfortable? Fear? Disgust? Sheer discomfort?
This forum has a long, long, long way to go with some of the bass ackwards attitudes I see sometimes. Fully accepting of LGBT issues (minus some real 'Wonderful' people who end up getting banned)....but the second something crosses their OWN discomfort zone where it is " Popular " to bash on it and be a bigoted ****, then by all means, have at!!
Glad to see the mods have been active on this thread.
And sorry, not sorry, but I view an opinion that basically states " Why don't you go back into your hole that you crawled out of. " As extremely offensive and extremely bigoted and prejudiced.
You may want to proofread that first sentence. Missing a word or two that could really change the way this reads in a big way.Look, I didn't make you feel bad. I'm just here for the discussion. I just don't understand the movement and I never will. I didn't mean to offend you.
Then you're not really here for a discussion. You're here to level your disgust at something harmless, which, I mean, I guess is technically talking to folks.I'm just here for the discussion. I just don't understand the movement and I never will.

I think that's a close-minded attitude to have regarding any group of people, even those you think are weird. Especially just after saying you were here for the discussion.
Yeah that's probably what it was, a Sonic -> DeviantArt -> furry leap in my mind. Thanks for the clearupI, uhh, I'm not quite sure what to say to this. This seems more like a DeviantArt thing. I've been to 3 different cons and don't see a ton of Sonic/fanmade Sonic-style characters.
It's easy to draw, I'm guessing. Wolves are still really popular, but bears are getting pretty popular as the fandom gets older. There are a lot more art styles than Neopets, that's for sure. Take an artist like Kenket for example, who's been popular for more than a decade:

Out of my own curiosity, who is the artist that drew those? The art style seems eerily familiar to that of my Friends who is an Artist. Or at least one of her Friends that I know.

That artist is Kenket, aka half of the duo "Blotch" who were making awesome comics until they split.
Where's my Nordguard continuation? ;~;
Kenket and Blackteagan. Back when they collaborated together as Blotch.

Oh....oh wow. Thank you Typhon for that link. As an aspiring Author that loves looking at various forms of art, this stuff is fantastic!
Might want to change your wording there...
To address your post though, In all honesty you didn't make me feel bad.
You actually made me extremely angry because of how I have seen Friends in my own life treated exactly the same way, with what is equivalent to those very words you chose to use. Just replace Furry with " Black " or " Lesbian ". And you get the idea. Don't get me started on when the AIDS scare started happening in the 80's. Fricking hell that was a nightmare time.
I'm not a furry, and will never consider myself one. But I have been around many of them and some of them are my Friends. And by far and above, they are some of the kindest, compassionate, and most understanding people on the face of the earth I have run into. A hell of lot nicer then some of the jackasses I have to work with in the industry I am in.
Look, I get that you didn't mean to cause offense. But you may want to very carefully craft and consider your words in the future. And in addition, if you don't understand the movement, try having an open mind and discussing it openly with those who are willing to amicably discuss it. Not understanding a movement is something that can be overcome. It happened with the Civil Rights movement and many others. This is no different.
Then you're not really here for a discussion. You're here to level your disgust at something harmless, which, I mean, I guess is technically talking to folks.
But come on. Gatekeeping at Pride? C'mon son.
I think that's a close-minded attitude to have regarding any group of people, even those you think are weird. Especially just after saying you were here for the discussion.
See? I find that great artwork tends to make a thread like this much more bearable.
You shed the chains of social demographics and get to be a cartoon character of your own making for a weekend, aka it's silly fun. *shrugs*I guess I just misunderstood why someone would want to dress up like an animal.
No, although there is naturally overlap.

I was actually thinking of making an Iggy suit because he is the best Koopaling. Nintendo can pull up.You ever see those badass cosplay photoshoots? It's kind of like that, except you get to own your character instead of Nintendo sending you a cease and desist.
Kinda? Like a sub-niche, or distant cousin. I find that most bronies almost never branch out of that specific series.
Thank you for the answers you guys (girls?).
Kenket and Blackteagan. Back when they collaborated together as Blotch. They also made a great graphic novel that never made it past the first book.
This is now an official comic recommendations thread.
I would argue that it is different. There is no furry race or sexual orientation. It's not like they have a history of oppression. The article mentions many were bullied but only at around the same rate as the average child.
Why should we treat this group as more of a sexual identity than some sort of fandom like the article mentions. Am I a bigot for not understanding Star Wars fans?
I never said I was disgusted. I guess I just misunderstood why someone would want to dress up like an animal.
I read the article with an open mind and the main point of the article was that the movement is more rooted in fandom than sex. Why are they all of the sudden a marginalized group?
It still is. Get with the times, old man.I mean, FFS, Gamer used to be a foul, dirty word spoken of when I was growing up
Really? No history of oppression? Are you serious? Are you freaking kidding me?!?!
Furries are one of the most persecuted, hated, and mocked and laughed at, and extremely misunderstood fandoms in existence. I mean, just look at some of the IMMEDIATE knee Jerk reaction posts in this thread that immediately devolve into viewing them as sexual deviants or even worse. And you mean to tell me that you feel that they suffer no oppression or misunderstood views, when your own words are a prime example of that? Seriously? Just because a portion of a fandom makes something sexual ( For crying out loud, you want to talk about Fandom's making things sexual....look at all of the Star Wars, Star Trek, StarGate or slash fanfiction of insert other popular series name here) does not make the entirety a group to be feared. I mean, do you fear Star Wars fans or Star Trek fans? Just people there are people out there that totally want to see Kirk and Spock bang and write fanfiction of it?
I mean, FFS, Gamer used to be a foul, dirty word spoken of when I was growing up until most of us grew old enough to take over the mainstream culture and stop that nonsense bullshit. And even still, we end up fighting it to this day due to the Nutbags who take it too far and swat peoples houses, etc.
Someone wanting to dress up as an Animal is no different in my view then someone cosplaying as Mercy. Or James T Kirk. Or a frigging Dalek. I mean....seriously, why would someone want to dress up as a Dalek? What's the point, am I right?
Misunderstanding can be overcome. But it really sounds like you have no desire to overcome that misunderstanding. Instead, you keep stepping in bear traps you're setting yourself and making yourself look extremely bigoted and prejudiced.
I looked at these and immediately rolled my eyes....and then thought to myself, hang on, aren't you a fan of the Chanur books? You know, the ones about space tigers and shit?
Anyway, the whole Furry scene falls into 'very much not my thing' territory, but I'm less derisive of it than I was a few years ago. Well, I'm still very derisive of the diaper furs and their ilk I guess.
You just sort of made my point for me. There are misunderstandings as opposed to oppression. Every group is marginalized to some extent, and some more than others. But furries are closer to Star Trek fans and gamers than blacks or gays.
