I have not read a fiction book in months (gaming backlog fucked me) which is super rare. Now I don't know where to even start. I tried looking at some "best of" lists and nothing stuck out to me.

I like sci-fi horror, ancient artifacts/ghost ships are always a plus. I like fantasy, but can't stand authors like Hobb and Sanderson. Love Abercrombie and Martin. Anything super off the wall and unique like China Mieville would also be awesome, but nothing I've read really comes to close to his creativity.

I'm also up for something in the sci-fi fantasy humour category, IE Douglas Addams or Terry Pratchett.

Literally any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I'm just at a wall of non-interest right now and I'm quite annoyed at myself.

THANK YOU BOOK ERA!!!

I'm not enjoying The Sisters Brothers as much as I had hoped. I'm only 115 pages into it, and I do like it, but I had really high hopes for it.

There's some funny stuff, but I don't know where it's going and an not as immersed as I had expected to be.

So I finished Killing Commendatore today...didn't hate it, didn't like it. I think the most frustrating part was the pacing.
Overall, it was an interesting read. I think for my next Murakami I'll pick up one of his shorter novels.

Guys I want to read my first book! I love science fiction and fantasy movies/TV Shows so I want to start with that genre.
I was looking for a list of recommendations and came up with a bunch of books that sounded interesting so I wanted to ask you guys if you read any of those and if you can recommend those.

We Are Legion - We Are Bob
The Three-Body Problem
All Systems Red
Vicious by V.E. Schwab
Binti
Red Rising
Dark Matter
Sleeping Giants
Skyward

Can you recommend any of those? I don't like cheesy storywriting and lovestories but otherwise I'm just looking for a captivating and compelling story.

I've only read Dark Matter, but am reading Three-Body Problem very soon. Dark Matter was good but mixed. It could be great for a first read because it's more of a thriller in that it's a pretty fast paced page turner.

Look at Ursula K. Le Guin's works. The Dispossessed and The Left Hand of Darkness are both superb sci fi.

I feel like Freedom by Jonathan Franzen is going to take me a year to read. I'm enjoying the hell out of it and I'm about 150 pages in or so, but I'm not sure these pages could be any thinner or lines on the page any closer. I was feeling pretty proud of myself for reading a King novel and the last book in a fantasy series within a little over a week, but this book feels like it's going to take forever to wade through.

That being said I find it fascinating. The way it unwinds the story, even the little I've gotten through, is very interesting and engaging. Even with everyone present seeming kinda terrible.

three body problem, sleeping giants, and red rising are all dreadful.

I thought Artemis was decent. The Expanse is ok. Dark matter is also ok.

I'm in the mood for a good legal thriller or mystery after I finish the Witcher book I am reading. Was the latest "Robert Galbraith" Cormoran Strike book good?

Just read 'The Quantum Thief' for a local book club. Wow that is some terminology dense sci-fi reading, it just drops you in a world with no explanation and then piles on the complexity without explaining any of it. Can't say I enjoyed it overall, but it does have it's moments.

I just finished reading Parasite Eve after coming across it on amazon by accident. It wasn't a fantastic book. It's got some chapters that are a little dense with technical bio/medical jargon but it wasn't surprisingly easy to follow it.

The book is considered horror and for most of it I wasn't getting too much of a horror vibe (outside of science shouldn't be messing with this sort of vibe) but when it finally started happening the book left me feeling a bit unnerved by some of the things that had happened.

I think Freedom just gave me the biggest elbow in the ribs trying to get me to pay attention to symbolism in the book. Usually this would feel over the top and annoying, but I had actually liked it because I felt like I was catching on to the reoccurrence of specific things but not really paying much attention to the significance of it.

Your username is from a book series right? I read The Keep from the adversary cycle and loved it, read a sequel about some wolf guy and just dropped it kind of bored. Worth reading the repairman Jack books seperately?

Some of them are very good. The problem with them comes from the usual long running series issue of becoming too formulaic. Eventually the formula becomes too apparent and for me that just kind of gets stale. Also I'm not sure if it's a case of me getting older, or the writer getting more direct with it but over time it seemed like his Libertarian views seeped more and more into the series.

Hmmm. Well The Tomb is only £3 on kindle so I may at least give that one a read. I'll add it on my expansive book wishlist ha ha. Thanks.

Looking at Goodreads I'm actually surprised at how well reviewed the books are. I thought the first 5-6 were all really great but after that the formula sort of set in and became basically window dressing for what he was trying to do for his over-arching Adversary Cycle tie-in stuff. The reviews seem to go up though.

Reminds me of my experience with the Jack Reacher books where they became pretty much the same book reskinned

Question: I have the six mini books that comprised The Green Mile, when it was released in serial fashion. I also know it's out as one big book, and have a copy of that.

GoodReads has it listed in the six individual books and probably as the full book too. If I was to read the small ones, it would count as six separate books. Meanwhile, if I read the big one it'd count as one.

How would you count it? I keep a Word file, so I don't know if I should do all six mini books and list them one by one, or just list them as one?

I go for the single book but I've only had that happen once for me. Killing Season by Faye Kellerman. I guess it had come out as 3 different parts or books but I had read it as the full book. I mean you're not going to read them out of order or only read 3 of them are you? You're reading the whole thing.

Finished The Book Of Dust.

It was.....it was fine. I had a good time reading it, but I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I did Northern Lights.

Going to start Evelyn Hardcastle next.

Got sucked in to the Kindle Unlimited 3 months for $1.99

Anyone know of anything on there that isn't a dodgy romance novel? Last 3 books I've read were I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, Snow Crash and Springfield Confidential.

I was thinking of starting The Three-Body Problem.

Any other sci-fi, cyberpunk, noir type recommendations would be fine too, I have no problem buying something that's not on Unlimited.

Altered Carbon.

I wasn't too keen on it myself as I think the writing was pretty bad with pacing issues and missing information (not selling it to you I know lol) but the idea is excellent and it's pretty popular. Netflix even made a series based on it. You may like it.

Picking up GRRMs Fire & Blood today. Hope it's ok on the Kindle. E-Books with illustrations are very meh. It's not Winds, but I've been reading GoT since 1996, so i'll take anything he writes at this point.

Didn't realize the author of the Homesick for Another World short story collection had a new novel out so I just bought that.
My Year of Rest and Relaxation

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076NTR2WX/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

I'm curious as to whether or not you'll like it. I completely miss subtext in all novels and movies, so I don't feel like I got too much out of it. The prose is sparse and in such a focused novel, it made it a better read.

I've read Purity and the Corrections by him, and I really enjoyed Corrections. Purity was not what I expected at all. Freedom is next on my list.

I'm finishing up Reaper's Gale by Steven Erikson, and I'm deciding whether I should move onto the next Malazan book or refresh with a non-fantasy. I'm too into it though.

I'm now about 300 pages through and I'm really liking it. I always find it it more interesting when a book can seemingly be mundane or not so dramatic but still be captivating. I hope it keeps it up throughout. I definitely plan on checking out his other stuff if I finish this and still love it. Though I'm having the opposite of you right now, reading this is for some reason making me want to take a huge dive into some big fantasy world.

Finished the last wish a couple of days ago, it was awesome (2nd reading, first was in spanish, 2nd in English). Sword of destiny and blood of elves were delivered today, plan on starting them on the weekend.

I'm also on chapter 8 of 1984, lets see how good this classic is.

I am about half way through I'll be gone in the dark and I'm starting to think I might not be the kind of person with the composition to handle reading graphic depictions of the actions and methodologies of serial rapists. My only lifeline is knowing that after the book came out, he was caught, but if I didn't know that, and thought he had got away with all fo this, well..... I don't know how I'd be able to stomach it to be honest

Read it, loved it, bought the hoodie. One of my favourite books - it's one I recommend to others and all of them ended up recommending to others. My best mate has now bought about 5 copies over the years to give to other people.

I finished Grey Sister by Mark Lawrence the other day, and have started Skyward by Brandon Sanderson. I'm really enjoying it so far -- I could totally see an animated movie based on it. Also listening to Calypso by David Sedaris on audiobook - it's hilarious, touching, and a little sad... So typical Sedaris, which I love. I laugh out loud while listening to it.

I never saw the show. Read the book on many recomendations and found it unsatisfying but I'm in the minority there so I recommended it to you anyway lol. It is literally sci-fi/cyberpunk/noir though.

You said you read Snow Crash? I got that in a sale recently. Did you like it?

I really liked it. The world turns out to be really unique(I won't spoil how), and the main character really grows on you. It's a lot darker than I was expecting, with one scene that I had trouble getting through. I'd definitely recommend it though. I actually just finished Grey Sister, the sequel(the above post was a typo), and it was a good read as well.

|It's definitely a trilogy? I'll wait on that too then. I prefer to read finished series rather than have to re-read them a couple of years later because I can't remember important characters or details.
