Finally got my copy. Just got past the first mission area. The amount of loot, customization etc is almost comical. It's like I'm constantly drowning in loot and stats and forging etc. I absolutely love loot heavy games so it's perfect. Also really like the whole kodama mechanic. I always feel like I'm progressing even when I'm dying all the time.

Started the game today and beat the first "real" boss. I have already been to the menus that opened up after the first area and found the Torii Gates mode for coop to help other players out. Am I correct that I can only do so between missions, not while I myself am undertaking a mission (where I can only summon myself with an ochoku cup)?

Managed to defeat Nue on my first try! It almost felt as I unlocked my own Ultra Instinct in that fight.
Man, the adrenaline I felt after defeating it when I had just ran out of elixirs... I love it.

Ive got right back into this. I am level 190 and getting fucked hard in the last region on NG+.

Are there any OP builds I could use to make life easier?

I got to a boss
Yukki-Onna
and they wreck me. Previous boss was way easier!

It's about playing the distance game, not too close that you can't avoid the aoe, not too far that you can't reach her in time to take advantage of openings.

I'll give you the tip for dealing with what I assume is the move you have problems with.

Assuming you're in the mid-ground distance that I was talking about, the moment you see her getting ready to do her dash-stab, just back the fuck up all the way. It has a limited distance despite how long range it looks. If you get it right you'll be in the perfect distance to retaliate

If I replay a level to try and get all the Kodama does the boss respawn? Haven't tried it yet and I'm just at the start after the first area. After I finish up this sub mission I wanted to try and go back for em.

It does respawn, but you could always just use an Himorogi branch after finding the last kodama you need (you get a message saying "all of this level's kodama have been guided back to the shrine" when you do) if you want to avoid fighting it.

Great thanks! Just wanna get the last 2 Kodama, totally forgot it told me about the branch. There are so many things to keep track of. Loving it tho.

Yup, Torii Gates are for either random encounters or playing with friends, you can play through the whole campaign co-op with a friend or rando if you want too. (Every fight is a billion times easier in co-op)

There is a difference between summoning somebody with an ochoko cup and Torii gate's 'Yokai Realm with a Companion' though.
A visitor summoned with an ochoko cup has one life and if they die they boot out. Also to be summoned into a mission you have to have completed that mission I believe (this may have changed thought)

In 'Yokai Realm with a Companion' you both share a Assist Gauge that depletes whenever one of you dies, shrines now just replenish some of that gague and give a small bonus but still don't behave as a checkpoint or menu.

Some mission cannot be done in co-op, you can tell by the icons on the top right of the mission info card/panel. Usually these are duel missions.

Yokai Realm with a Companion has issues mechanics wise, when you run out of gague you just get booted back to the mission select screen and it's a huge waste of time when really it should give you the option to restart from the beginning. Also it can be infuriating in some missions where there's tons of pitfalls.

I havent found any items above +4 in any region and Ive put a lot of hours in. What am I doing wrong?
Well, stocking up on Luck may get you slightly higher (+#) values and more divine items in general, but you just need to keep upgrading the ones that you get via Soul Matching like I explained before. Get 24 (+4) weapons and you'll end up with a single (+8) and another (+7). You won't find (+10) items from Way of the Strong, you have to make them.
So there are people farming maps for high level equipment? You guys are insane! And here I am wishing Nioh wouldn't have all that stupid loot and fixed level gear.
Didn't actually say that, but yeah, farming can be pretty damn effective. Marobashi (end game mission) drops high tier loot at a crazy rate once you get the ball rolling in handling the combat encounter it presents.

Loot is what drives people to play up to NG+4. It's a well thought out system and the game gives you insane amounts of tools to manage loot and customization options to control what loot you can even see and pick up. I agree loot isn't that interesting in the first playthrough, but it is certainly the driving force for all subsequent difficulties. When the combat is so good, and there is a carrot on a stick to keep chasing, many people will play for hundreds of hours.

I thought as much.

I definitely don't see myself doing that. I'm currently late region 4 and already struggling with gameplay fatigue to be honest. Nioh would've needed a lot more different enemy types and map variety first and foremost imo. I feel like I am fighting the same handful of enemies for hours now. :-(

Finished the game, 63 hours play time.

Absolutely loved it from start to finish, the gameplay especially is simply excellent. There are just so many moves, tools, mechanics, systems etc. in play that there is depth up the wazoo. Even the Guardian system has a ton of depth that you don't usually get from devil trigger mechanics. And the way they incorporated them with known historical figures was pretty damn cool.

The combat is pretty much a Souls killer for me, don't know how I'll go back to those games now. The Ki management system and how you use it not only for your character but take advantage of the enemy's Ki as well is just brilliant. Definitely the best stamina based system to date in a game.

The stage structure works perfectly and I really like how they handled the shortcuts within levels, since they are stage based they were able to go more all out with them. I thought the Kodama system would get annoying but it was actually fun and I enjoyed finding those little guys, not to mention their more lighthearted design and character was a nice contrast to the seriousness of the game.

The sub missions could get tiresome since they were reusing stages from the main missions but the main missions were great and so were the bosses. Enjoyed the game a lot more once I started sticking just to main missions about half way through the game.

The plan was to start another game after it but all I could think about after finishing Nioh is playing more of it lol.

Easily Team Ninja's best game to date imo.

Oh and Okatsu is a total babe.

Not being able to use the shrines as quick travel points like the bonfires in Dark Souls is killing a lot of the fun for me. Going back to places is fine but doing the same stuff again (unlocking shortcuts etc) isn't for me. Add to that that you don't usually know if the door you are opening is a boss room or not. Makes exploring kinda stressful because I can not go back to that shrine quickly after killing the boss, I have to fight my way back to it again. So I constantly try to get as much as possible in one go. Also because there is most likely another sub mission in the exact same zone. It's a lame design imho.

Also I just killed another boss and had no issues again. I skipped most of the fight because I did get her down to 2/3 quickly and then used living weapon which completely destroyed her. Also a weird design decision. But whatever, I use everything I have to kill the enemies.

Wheeww, my ninjutsu/kusarigama build starting to get less effective in later missions of Way of The Strong. I was really used to my kunai wrecking regular enemies -- Skeletons, Yokis, Ninjas etc -- in 3-4 throws, now they need 2x more.
I think I'll stick with this build until I unlock new NG+ tier, before respec-ing and explore another build.

Also, how to unlock Maria skin transformation? I've beaten her twice on normal + Way of The Strong, but she didnt show up on teahouse :(

So, what weapons feels most satisfying to use? I finally want to start playing! =)
Also mouse patch is out, not without quirks (like you can only scroll with mouse wheel), but it works!

I would say either kurisagama or the tonfas. Double swords and the sword are in second place, but don't be shy and try them out, although some of them only come together after a few skills.

You can make a good Ninja Kunai build that works well all the way to the end of NG+5 just shootIng enemies with Kunai or storm Kunai. It doesn't work well against human enemies that block a lot unless you knock them down or hit them in the back. The DLC3 Ninja Armor set is pretty strong for it.

Whoa, I must've missed some good equipments. I used Dragon Ninja set (Hayabusa apparels and Dragon Sword + kusarigama) and have unlocked all Jutsu for powering up thrown weapons, but still having hard time killing some enemies in NG1. Guess I'll adjust something later or reforge my equipments until I got better effects.

IIRC you need to unlock or beat the 3rd DLC?
I've unlocked missions from DLC 3 though haven't finished all of them, so looks like I need to beat DLC 3 to see if she shows up after that. Thanks!

The dlc is so damn hard I dont think I will get far. Im kind of stuck around level 190 and levelling takes a long time just using the torii gate as I suck in way of the strong on my own. Will stick with it but getting frustrated.

The wiki doesn't list them all and even has double of one. I am in the last region before DLC. I have unlocked some, like Otsaku and Tome. What are the rest of the female skins? How do you unlock those? Fuku I imagine is the Omnya training stuff.

As far as I know there are only 5:
Okatsu - Ninja Dojo, veteran
Tachibana Ginchiyo - finish one of sub missions (I forgot which one, A Request from Ginchiyo?)
Fuku - Onmyo Dojo, Veteran
Senji Tome - dunno how, she's just unlocked on teahouse (I guess after spending certain amount of gold in Blacksmith?)
Maria - I have yet to unlock her, supposedly she's available after finishing missions from 3rd DLC

Thanks! Tome dissappeared for me though...dunno why.

Generally, I quite like how the game's managed to balance more atmospheric tracks and ambience with more present background music, but the Defiled Castle theme is really repetitive and grating. It kind of works for the first 30 seconds after it plays, but after that it quickly progresses towards being annoying.

I'm really tempted by the settings of the game.
Just a quick question: Is this game "fair hard" like the Souls series or "unfair hard" like the Ninja Gaiden series?
I just played the alpha and didn't like it, because it felt more like the latter one, difficult for the sake of difficulty.

I'd say it's fair, probably more fair than Dark Souls honestly.

I'm terrible at Souls games. I was better at BB, got a little over halfway through before just getting frustrated. I just recently got Nioh and I'm enjoying it more. Maybe it's that the combat is that much more responsive and quick, maybe it's the 60fps. I can run around slicing up enemies, feeling bad ass fairly easily. It helps that I got it for $20 on sale too.

As someone who despised the those "unfair" spikes of the Ninja Gaiden series (anyway great action games, of course), Nioh is more than fair. I don't know if its your case, but the problem that a lot of people have when they begin to play Nioh (happened to myself), they try to play it as a Souls game. But William is far more agile (sprinting to evade for example), the Ki system is totally different.. Nioh its a unique game in thats sense. When the flow of the combat clicks, its simply amazing.
