Okay, I've started Oath in Felghana but I think I'm gonna bounce off this series hard. I can't beat the first boss and while I don't mind difficult games, here I just have no slightest clue what I'm doing wrong. I checked some guide and youtube, and I'm trying to dodge his attacks the same way but it just seems random whether they hit or miss. And his attack patterns seem so simple! I'm at a loss.

I'm going back to Trails.

The first boss would be the boss with the flying swords right? I had a decent amount of trouble with this guy too; couldn't dodge one particular sword pattern (the double toss) for the life of me but managed to eke out a narrow victory after 5 tries or so. Maybe try and see if you can upgrade your weapon to make the fight easier? I assume you're playing on Normal.

Okay, I think I forgot it's still an RPG and I can do things like upgrading equipment lol. Made him more manageable, thanks.

Upgrades like levels and equipment improvements make a HUGE difference in Ys games, especially ones like Oath in Felghana and Origin. A single level or equipment upgrade could be the difference between getting slaughtered and having no trouble at all.

After putting this series off for years, I picked up Felghana last week. I'm halfway through Inferno now and am already looking forward to the Christmas sales so I can buy more. Great stuff!

A pretty decent article from Waypoint on the Ys VIII localization debacle. Not at all surprising to hear their company culture is largely to blame, considering their history of localization blunders.

There are a few little issues with the article that I must correct, though - Kondo was one of four writers on the story, not the only one, and "dump" is definitely more tonally appropriate than "shit" in the scene shown at the end.

It is a bit concerning to see that Alan still doesn't seem to realize that there were, in fact, an uncomfortable amount of actual mistranslations on top of the general roughness.

I read his explanation, but I'm not putting stock in it; there were just so many errors, it goes way and above beyond "not saying anything". And the errors in question were suspiciously in the nature of "Japanese person learning English as a second language" errors.

The only feasible explanation I can think of to have as many mistakes as they did was simply that they were trying to rush as quickly as possible to get it out and thought that they could pull a fast one without coming close to actually editing the script. Would explain the PC delays, as the port was nowhere near ready.

That's what I'm getting at - it seems that as a company, they definitely prioritize turnover time over ensuring quality.

I bought Ys Seven on Steam during the sale (it wasn't a huge sale but hey, I wanted to play it now).

I put it on Hard and I wonder if I made a huge mistake. Trash mobs are piss-easy, but so far I've had to grind a level or two for the first two bosses otherwise they just destroy me. :(

Are any quests missable or expirable? I found about 6 of them so far (+ the titanos one on the map, which did 4000 damage on my 200HP guys so I noped out of there real fast xD).

Yeah, there's a few that you can permanently miss if you don't talk to the right person during brief windows between story points. Talking to you, cowardly merchant guy in the room behind the bar. Asshole.

This FM-synth cover of Sunshine Coastline has gone underrated for far too long!

One reason I want new Zanmai albums is so Noriyuki Kamikura could hopefully another FM arrangement of a Falcom tune. The above upload's got an uncanny resemblance to how Koshiro arranges/composed Etrian Odyssey tunes, also, which makes me wonder if Sound Team jdk will ever try a demake soundtrack for one of their new games.

I just want to say that I listened this for 5 hours straight at work today.

Finished Ys VIII and I liked the game a lot.
Dana is by now one of my favorite Ys protagonists (not counting Adol).
I also love the great OST.

The localization didn't bother me since I am not a native speaker, I found it rather amusing at times.
I also listened to the japanese voice acting.

Unless you're struggling to read English at all, your low standards shouldn't have anything to do with your lack of English-native-ness.

Count me in with the low standards as well, I guess. It perhaps isn't as impactful for me as I don't have a long relationship with the Ys series and had the audio in Japanese, not sure. The localisation felt a bit clunky to me but it hasn't impacted on my enjoyment of the game.

[Edit: talking about Ys Seven]

Is there a spoiler-free boss guide out there that just lists the recommended level (Hard mode) for each boss?

Every boss I've fought so far, I couldn't come close to beating without at least an extra level. It's annoying having to re-watch the boss intro cut scenes since they're unskippable.

Wonder if I should just restart on Normal... :(

I was told this is the place to go for Ys VIII questions....

Does anyone know how to do any of the night missions? It appears that I'm missing the night mission from my quest list.

On that note, I'm also missing 1 Eternian mission I cannot identify

As far as I remember you just go to a camp in front of the area the mission is in, go to the tent and you should have the option to rest until nightfall or something like that.

You have to go to the campsites you've set up along the way and attempt to sleep. If there's a night mission there, you'll get an option to initiate. First one available is at the entrance to Coral Forest.

You'll have to be more specific about the Eternian missions since there's quite a few of them that can be "missed". Like what save crystal it's at.

hmmm. I'll keep trying.

I've literally done everything, but my:

people journal is stuck at 91.7%
Castaway Village quests are stuck at 96.8% (31/32)
Eternia Quests are stuck at 90.0 (9/10)

Adventure gear (10/11) I've made/crafted/tailored everythign I can
Weapons 97.7 (43/44) ????? I go the trophy for it though, but not the item trophy
Accessories 96.3% again, I've made everything.

The only chest I have left is in the
Silent Tower

uggh, so close, yet so far away with these few things missing for a bunch of trophies...

Fish it says 24/24 but the trophy won't pop... $%^#^#%^

So I'm a gigantic Ys fan. Ys I, II, Oath (I even have a soft spot for a couple of different versions of the original III), VI and Origins are so ridiculously fun.

That said, I fucking hated Seven and Celceta and found them to be immensely boring. The only worse game in the series I've played is V (and I probably would have found V to be better overall if it wasn't for the awful combat). I just hate how they cut out the best part that the "Ark trilogy," which was the verticality and complexity of the dungeons and combat with the jumping and platforming elements, and replaced it with really boring and flat environments that never seemed to end. And they never shut up, despite having bad characters and bad stories.

So what's the deal with VIII? I've been waiting for the PC version so I haven't played it yet. I don't want too many spoilers (which is why I haven't done my own individual research on the matter, I always end up spoiling myself by accident when I do, hahaha), but how would I like this from a gameplay standpoint? I understand it continues the trend of never knowing when to shut up, but do the environments have more complexity to them with the reintroduced jumping?

Ys VIII's dungeons and overworld bring back the missing verticality, though not all at once. Jumping doesn't have much use in combat until later (ex. aerial enemies) and the game doesn't try to punish unskilled platforming as hard as Felghana. But it does play a lot more of a role than in Seven and Celceta, for the better.

That said, I wouldn't call dungeons like Wind Sanctum, Sea Sanctum, Holy Precincts of Wind, Edona Village, or even Ancient Tree flat and boring. The lack of manual platforming means Ys Seven's best dungeons throw a different variety of hazards and puzzles at you in addition to combat, and enemies use more AOE attacks to encourage dodge evasion (and I think getting the timing right for constant rolls helps a lot with zipping across areas). I don't see how these dungeons are any longer or duller than Elderm Mountains or Valestine Castle, if only because I really like the different approach to level design vs. boxed-in platforming. As for story stuff, I'll just say that, in Japanese, Ys VIII's characters and plot move faster and work better than the past two games. The English localization harmed Western players' perception of the story's quality, unfortunately.

Thanks for posting this! In his initial call for the article, Alan mentioned that "on my initial look of the title" is where the original analysis of the script was formed, but as we've been working on it we decided that the entirety of the script was to be reviewed. I just want to reassure that we are taking this incredibly seriously.

In the spirit of open discussion with our fan base we have additionally been putting out a weekly localization update about where we are in the process and samples of the work we are doing.

I know how much this means to everyone involved and that there are, rightfully, disappointments from our fans in the initial reaction, but we really are trying to be as honest and transparent with everyone, while still keeping our obligations to our partners like Falcom in what we can and can't divulge.

We are reading and watching as much feedback as we can in our day to day, and appreciate that people are still showing interest. Thank you,

^ Interesting.

Does that tell you a mission is not done?
It'll list every major and optional event you can do in the past from that crystal. Missions/events you haven't initiated will show up as ?????. Though that isn't much help if you don't know what it is you need to do to complete it. But it's a starting point.

Weird, I can't see it. Maybe that option was removed from the Vita version?

It also won't give me tge fishing trophy even tjough I've caught every normal fish possible and there are no master fish in the Vita version... (full Shobill approval)

Oh. Oh dear.

Eternia quest listing was a new QoL addition added to the PS4 version (PC too, I guess). You might need to consult a FAQ to track down which one you're missing (certain quests were PS4-only). For that matter, Night missions don't exist in the Vita version either. No wonder you're so confused!

Uggh. Of course, tgere isn't a Vita apecific guide out there either. Oh well, I finish with about 75- 80% trophies done, but at least I have enough for tge true ending, which is all that really matters to me.

Are the ps2 ys games worth playing? I am talking about ys 1-5.

Maybe Ys 5, I think I've read that one is a little better than the SFC version.

For 1-4 I don't think there is any reason to play those over the other versions of those games.

Edit: Eternal Story is functionally what we already have in English on PC and PSP. AFAIK Eternal is the original version of this Ys 1 and 2 release and was ported to PS2 (apparently with some minor weapon effects). Then they updated Ys 1 with more colors and released Complete with both Ys 1 and 2 as a compilation. Then Complete was ported to PSP with new art and music as Chronicles. And of course we have that and Chronicles+ on PC in English.

3 is the same as the SFC/SNES version but with updated sprites.

4 is actually kind of different since it's a psuedo-3D take on Mask of the Sun. I don't know if it's good, even prior to Celceta basically nobody talked about it and Dawn of Ys was widely considered to be the best version of Ys IV.

It's a shame the translation community is basically non-existent on the PS2. I didn't even know there was an Ys V on PS2 until after I started playing the SFC version.

Hello, found an article about Ys and Nisa/Falcom : NIS America and Nihon Falcom on how to save the JRPG. Here some tidbits, the rest of the interview is very interesting.

"This time, of course, another enthusiastic proposal was received. However, within that, some of the key features were the French localisation – this was something that had never been proposed before – and the very detailed idea and plan for both marketing and for sales. This impressed us very much, so much so that we decided to go with NIS America this time."

NIS America's publishing partnership with Nihon Falcom may well continue beyond the release of Ys VIII, too, as Kondo says he "would love to continue working with NIS America on a broader front globally going forward." He himself admits that while "we as a company are very good at making games, we're not very good at PR for ourselves," making it "necessary" to have a partner like NIS America when promoting their titles overseas.

SO I finally finished Ys VIII. It was great stuff, I'm gonna miss it!

I finished only missing 1 Arm, 1 piece of Adventure Gear and 4 monsters, although I killed anything and everything came across, crafted everything, forged everything, did all quests, caught all fish and got all trophies except the Item/Monster/Nightmare ones... That 91% is killing me!

Is there a bonus dungeon after the epilogue, or are those missing items only available during a Nightmare run?

Finished my first run on Ys Origins yesterday. Loved the final boss, easier than I expected though! Hard mode seemed like the right choice, just hard enough to give me a decent challenge but not impossible. What's Nightmare difficulty like? Debating whether or not to do a run after I finish the other two characters.

I don't mind Nisa as long as after the blunder that was YS VIII they realize that they can't screw localization. Besides that, I loved everything that they did with marketing and limited editions. even the day one box was a nice surprise for me

The game sold well in the west?

One of the greatest and yet most under appreciated series of all time.
So glad to see a community here!
The urge hit me the other day that I want to do a run through soon (need to get a power cord for my vita) .

I'm curious if NISA will offer a discount for their pre-order of Ys 8, esp. as the PS4 ver. is bound to get discounted in digital sales soon or down the line.

I played Ys: VIII on my LED TV for roughly 70-80 hours. I bought an OLED and booted it up. Straight up, it looks like a different game. The colors are insane with Ys VIII.

I really liked hard mode and found it to be satisfyingly challenging.

My go at hard mode didn't last very long. I got through the first area without too much trouble and enjoyed it. First boss completely slaughtered me in like 3-4 hits while taking tons of hits to take down. Grinding was taking too long since I was already around the "cap," put it down and never went back.

Beat the first 4 bosses now as Hugo on hard mode. Got a good thing going now, beating the giant centipede with far fewer problems than when I faced it as Yunica, such a satisfying win, then again I felt Hugo's fighting style really made the fight way easier. Damn this game is addictive!
