I wouldn't have had any hope of coming up with that!
Reverse engineering builds (or anything for art for that matter, I did 3D computer modeling for years working off general images of objects or even other models with a decent degree of accuracy despite a lack of training) is an old hobby of mine. Although it would have been easier with a clear look at the parts list on top as that would have narrowed down how some of this sticks together better(for example those 2 flat grippers and vertical bar are the only thing attaching the top. the window lens itself is attached to the middle piece that rests in place)

My results generally look the same externally, although some of the ways they stay together may be a little less orthodox and I may use more or less pieces. My recreation should work and has about 18 pieces, it would also possible work as a side door on an airplane or boat if you put hinges on the vertical bar.

Needless to say I entered the LEGO building contest, I love a good challenge(always wanted to be a master builder, but that's not a easy job to get. Then again what fan doesn't have that dream), and I don't have the fattest budget for excess LEGO buying

Sorry to be a Debbie downer but I'm not a fan of the diner set. The previous buildings had a nice 1930s European town flavour to them. I doubt this one will fit with the rest. It is too American for this range (no offense American peeps :))

I think that's what they're going for.
We got to the 10 year point with the last series of modulars and this seems to be kicking off a new era (notice also that the minifigs aren't the basic smiley faced dudes they used to be in past ones).

I'm sure we'll know more once either a designer video releases for the Diner or when the next modular releases and we can confirm what building style they're planning into the future (whether they'll keep it 50-60's era buildings, or general American architecture).

I have to admit the new pics of the diner have sparked some interest that wasn't there before. Will probably pick it up with a good promo.
Can easily pass on the tron bike.
My only purchase over Black Friday was the scout trooper and speeder bike, which I've yet to build.

I think Palace Cinema, at the very least, is more US than EU. Detective Office too. And several places in the US are basically copies of EU buildings (the pet shop townhouse for example would fit well in a lot of US towns).

About the era, I don't buy the "1930". Several styles are possibly (far) older than 1930, and most modern towns still have them. They probably won't produce modern buildings, but I don't think they're from the very same era or it's designed as a 1930 town.

That being said, while I really like the Diner, I can understand while other may dislike it for those era/country reasons.

Diner looks amazing! Kinda fits with the Detective Office which is my personal favorite of the modulars.

And ffffuuuuuuu I must get those 60th anaversary miniatures. I got the Black Seas Barracuda as a christmas present as a kid, MAXIMUM NOSTALGIA. Hope I can still get it if I order the Diner day one.

I was also curious, if I have $55 in VIP points and use them towards buying the Diner would that still qualify for the freebie? Or would I need to order something else to get over $125 spent?

Ahh... that feeling when $250 worth of Lego shows up at your doorstep but you only paid $108 for it.

Each time I see the original castle, I think I should build it again... but somehow, I'm reluctant to destroy the "mocs" I did more than 20 years ago and somehow stayed in shape in a cupboard for so long :/

Do some of you still have some custons builds from when you were a child?

I'm laughing at the end of the first Winter Village Station instruction booklet.

2nd to last page: You have just put the finishing touches on a small bus.

Last page: WOULD YOU LIKE TO BUY THIS FULL SIZED LONDON BUS NOW?

Hmmm, I wound up picking up a blue pack for the LEGOGAF building competition too, and I think I may have made something equally impressive as my Yellow entry, but I don't know whether to go with it or not, then again I haven't gotten any thoughts on my first entry either, say PhoncipleBone , think you may have a chance to go take a look?

Also if someone wants to give me a fun challenge, I should have some time to kill tomorrow after I finish my paper, and I've been feeling creative. If someone has an interesting build that they want to challenge me with like I did with the round window for the diner, throw the picture at me!(doesn't necessarily have to be LEGO either, trying to make an unique feature in LEGO would be fun, and recreation is an old favorite challenge of mine). any thoughts toythatkills ?

I like the yellow one so far. I really, really need to make a submission. That thread has been dead and we need to keep it active since we are hitting December soon. And now that school is winding down for me I can be more active.

I know the feeling, I have one assignment left, a 12-15 page paper, problem is I have to finish the first draft tonight.

Also I always cross my fingers for Christmas LEGOs, even now in my mid twenties XD

I am pushing 40, and am either crossing my fingers for money for tuition next semester or smaller LEGO sets. Honestly not sure how I am going to afford a modular on January 1st.

I do need to upload the pics of my project for class that I decided to make out of LEGO.

24 and a Masters of History and I had the bad luck of a week of migraines, a week and a half of allergies(the state of California hates me) and family vacation, and now my general wandering mind(at least I haven't had writing block issues in 8 years. when I focus I can sit down and write a lot)

My upside downside is I've put enough emphasis on star wars over the years I tend to get a lot of those sets. Problem is what I'd love this year is the current holiday train and/or freight train, because I've always wanted to have my own Christmas train(but tend to break the tracks on the real ones). Doubt it'll happen especially since I need a pedal and speaker for my piano keyboard(and to figure out a program glitch it has, gotta love late 80's tech).

Also that LDD build challenge was open to you too, I love trying to recreate things

I am back at school for the first time since Dreamcast launch in 1999 (yes, my graduation was that weekend). I have a degree in animation but have been a retail slave all my life. This past August, I went back to school for the first time this millennium and am in an engineering program at a community college. The first class I took was a circuits I class. I was able to transfer in my gen ed stuff from the 90s so I bypassed the English and math classes and just jump right in, but that also introduced issues of feeling lost and confused for a bit since I was so far out of practice.
The final project in the circuits class was to build a simple reed switch motor. You could use the store bought kit and get a 70, but if you used parts salvaged from other things the grade went up. Or if you added buttons, relays, lights, etc. the grade went up even more. If you added a zoetrope or anything light weight (since the motors had no torque at all) to it that it could power the grade went up more.

Well, obviously, I decided to make mine out of LEGO.

I made it work with the 4x AA battery pack from the kit easily enough, but I wasn't happy. So I destroyed a power functions toggle brick to steal the cable and made it work with a LEGO battery pack. But I still wasn't happy. So I made it work with the IR remote too. I could turn the motor on and off at will with a remote control.

I then added a bunch of gear increases to slow down the RPMs and increase the torque on the motor. 1:45 to be exact. I was able to get enough torque out of the homemade motor to power the Carousel set from this past year.

We had to take in the motors and show them off in class last night. I was nervous about going in, thinking I didn't do a good job because I didn't salvage enough stuff from other electronics or add things the teacher wanted. But the response from the classmates told me enough. I took in the motor and the carousel and showed off how it had enough power to drive it. Some of the comments were, "Shit. I am glad he isn't grading on a curve." or "Ok, you win. Just put it away."
The last half of class was using the equipment to measure power draw from our motors as well as RPMs. From eavesdropping from some other groups I had either 2x or 50% higher RPMs than most others, and tons more torque due to the gear work.

Last night felt really, REALLY good. Like it was validation for the months of stress and the few nervous breakdowns I had about the class and feeling like an idiot occasionally. I am waiting for my final grade on the motor, so we will see if my good feeling about it all is justified.

And yes, I intentionally left my foot in the pics. Gotta carry on some traditions here!

Awesome PhoncipleBone that's a nice piece of work Ironically despite my current masters, my background is actually engineering, I was getting my bachelors in Aerospace engineering, but despite my skill in advanced mathematics, I stink at applied physics(memorizing equations is a weakness of mine. Space Mechanics sucks when you are aero track) and modern airplane design is boring unless you get in DARPA. So I salvaged a interdisciplinary studies BS with minors in mathematics, engineering science, and International Relations(got this one done in 2 semesters!). spent the last two years getting some 'practical' work experience(museum curator assistant, Ski Lift operator/skier, restored a 1935 movie theater into a live venue) decided I loved sharing and telling stories and that history was the best way to do that, so I'm back getting my masters. probably going for a professorship, archivist is tricky, and getting a curator position is like highlander, either the position holder dies, or gets a better gig and there can only be ONE.

Also threw my blue creation up in the challenge thread, I got a hard choice now. I definitely want to do some custom building over break as after I help my mom move I'll have access to my three tubs and 18 years worth of parts(including the remains of the original Lego star Wars X-wing, the first lego set I remember getting!). Don't know what I'll make, although after seeing the results of that LEGO ship contest, I may have to build the YT-2400 Outrider. even without scrapping my falcon I should be able to get all the grey pieces I need between the Star Destroyer and Tie carrier I got the other year

edit: for anyone not a star wars geek like me, this is the YT-2400(classic)

Few minor differences, but should be a fun challenge, although I wouldn't be surprised to see an official model as part of the rebels line... or maybe not since it's a side ship and the show end this next year, but ya never know

Mandos Thanks for the compliment and the background info! I know my work wasn't that impressive, but for being a first attempt at something with zero education on it, I am still proud of it.

Also, that ship you posted, that is Dash Rendar's ship right?

Yep, from Shadows of the Empire, and more recently the ship type has been re-canonized by the special edition version of ANH and Rebels. Still have a copy of the book and game, fun stories. And I'm sure people have made models before... of nearly everything, but thought I'd give it a go when I have access to my collection because I haven't tried it, and I haven't messed with my collection in a while. Although I just thought of a just as fun ship that I think has far less attempts of recreating it, the H-6 Scurrg piloted by the space pirate Nym!
scum-scurrg-h6-bomber-v2-600px.gif
(I actually own this piece which I could use as a quick reference! might have to do brown over red though... because I don't think I have many deep red pieces, but I do have the MTT model from several years back)

Also, again would love a challenge perspective item like the round windows to make in LDD later this week. I love solving puzzles of all sorts!
edit
who is Dash rendar? that ship belonged to Iron Squadron, the Sato's Hammer

;)
Second one does, but they are the same class of ship, the YT-2400. which was designed for Shadows of the Empire to be flown by Dash Rendar a lovable rogue

Edit edit:
The YT-2400 was canonized permanently starting with the '97 re-release of A New Hope as a background ship in Mos Eisley to coordinate with the book and game release, although the latter two are currently non-canon

What I was talking about yesterday was this:

It gives you a 40:1 ratio in speed with not that much losses in torque (less than a similar ratio with gears) so it can be a really useful solution for weak motors when you need some torque. Those worm gears are really nice.

If it's like the other freebies, as long as you have the right amount of stuff in the basket, you qualify. It doesn't matter how you pay for them. VIP points are basically store credit. So you would only need to buy the Diner. Just make sure the freebie is included in the basket before you do the order.

[UK] some very cheap LEGO on Asda Direct if you're quick. The 6x6 Technic set (this year's big one) is down from it's insane £220 to a more palatable £104, among loads of others.

Going out of stock fast though, it's all over HUKD.

Definitely going to aim at having some fun custom builds for you guys over December... after I help my mom move so I can access my 3 tubs of Parts

Oh and once again I'm open to challenges too, I love being creative within limitations whether that be references or supplies(which is why I love the LEGO building comp)

Diner looks interesting, not sold on the color choices mostly.

Just picked up Assembly Square for the kids for Christmas. I think this may be the last big set I buy in some time; the eldest is out growing the building urge and the youngest is simply awash in modulars so I don't think it has the same frisson of excitement and discovery. Feels weird, man. My kids won't really ever understand not having enough bricks, feel a little guilty about it.

That design can self-dissassemble. The worm is held in only by friction in the 3L axles. If the 40T gear is held in place, one or the other end of the axle brackets will get pushed off. Use this instead:

(you can put a 40T gear in the top hole instead of the 24T in this image if you like)

It's now December, so 'tis the season... for sets to retire. Just checked the EU shop.lego.com, and there are 209 things marked as 'retiring soon'. Although this also includes stuff like keychains, there are some more notable sets retiring, some I knew about, some I didn't:

UCS Tie Fighter
UCS Assault on Hoth
Millennium Falcon (standard one, not the new UCS one)
Temple of Airjitzu
Palace Cinema
Kwik-E-Mart
Ecto-1 & 2
Ferrari F40
Caterham 7
Mercedes Arocs Technic truck
Claas Xerion Technic tractor
Various Speed Champions
All Brickheadz, including the new ones, oddly

I'm not surprised. TLG bungled that line so horribly it was like watching a train wreck in slo mo. I'm glad I only got the LBM ones and the two B and the B ones.

Yeah i agree on all points BUT... why do i now feel like i HAVE to run out and grab every remaining Brickhead that looks halfway interesting? LOL damn you Lego

I wasn't talking about the design, just the worm gear + large gear combination. It was just a fitting image from the internet.

Now that I think about it, technic going away from bricks with holes won't help designing gear boxes...

I flick through some modern technic instruction manuals and it's quite sad the gymnastics they have to go through to get things to line up. And recently I had a play with my nephew's big pneumatic JCB. Very wobbly and creaky. Old brick technic was sturdier :(

I'd imagine a new playset sized Falcon not too far off if the current one gets retired. With the way Disney will keep putting out Star Wars movies, the theme is nearly an evergreen theme for Lego. You miss a set, just wait a year or two for the next release.
