I hope Sony learns the right lesson from this. More animated Spinoffs and Spiderverse films, and leave live action the fuck alone in Marvel Studios's hands.
... who am I kidding, they'll definitely learn the wrong lesson, and kill any and all talks to extend Tom Holland's contract in order to make their own live action films again.
Heck no. Venom was entertaining from start to finish.
Kraven has a solid premise
(Adapting Kravens Last Hunt from his perspective)
Decent director Rumoured (hit and miss to be fair but he was rumoured to be in talks for the MCU)
(Antoine Fuqua — Training Day, Equalizer)
You can also make a good Black Cat movie.
Superior Foes of Spider-Man is also ripe as a light action comedy. A rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead like focused story. purposefully adjacent to the action in almost a clerks like way about these loser super villains who have no idea what they're doing. Not even really all that evil, but a group of people who have made really bad life decisions with like no awareness.
I'd agree with this in general. Spider-Gwen was never a book I'd call stellar, but it IS one of the few books that is still an ongoing- vol. 1 was 5 issues and vol. 2 another 35 issues and she will continue as "ghost spider" after spider-geddon wraps up. The amount of solo books marvel is running that are anywhere near this amount of issues since 2015 is very, very low. Spider-Gwen has an audience, even if the book isn't thrilling for me personally.
Silk on the other hand never quite seemed to find it's audience. Vol.1 was about 7 issues, and the rebooted Vol. 2 about 19 issues before meeting cancellation. Not every character is suited to an ongoing, sure- marvel cancels them CONSTANTLY these days but it's rather telling that Cindy has been completely MIA since her book ended. Other than a quick panel where she's taken out of commission at the conclusion of Slott's run of ASM and a few Spider-Geddon cameos, I'm struggling to think of anywhere she's actually been used at all since 2016.
If the character is compelling or has potential Marvel will find ways to keep using them. For instance Gwenpool after cancellation was "rebooted" and incorporated into West Coast Avengers along with the Kate Bishop Hawkeye and Ms. America who also had recently cancelled titles that struggled to find footing. Amadeus Cho as "totally awesome hulk", Nadia Pym as Wasp II, and the Sam Alexander Nova continued to be used in Champions after their books ended. Even the Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider who had not one but TWO swiftly canceled and not-at-all-good books was retooled and incorporated into Avengers because someone at Marvel thinks he (and those other characters) have some potential even if they can't really carry a solo book.
I wonder if some of the economics of these lower selling series could be improved if Marvel goes digital with some for an a la cart sub, and then allows direct orders/manufacturing/shipping for the big fans. I feel like there's some sort of pseudo web comic model that could turn out moderately sustainable
