Just got my rental copy of Let's Go Pikachu and I've never played a Pokemon game before. I hear this is a good entry point as it minimises grinding and is basically simplified for a relaxed play through, and it's only like 15 hours critical path?

Anything worth knowing before getting started?

no. just play it. it's "beginner's pokemon" for a reason. a lot of the things I would tell you for any other game don't apply here

15 hours seems like a low estimate for someones first time playing. Pokemon is a very easy game to get through the single player without much advice, but having a type effectiveness chart would probably help a lot.

Just jump in and go with the flow. The game does a great job guiding you along on how to play and where to go.

Most importantly, have fun. :)

Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled trainers should try to win with their favorite

(But seriously, If you're finding it too easy, don't be afraid to swap in and out for a 'team' of more than 6 so that you can use more of your faves.)

Play however you like. I had a blast basically evolving every single Pokemon I came across and rotating everyone because of the option to access your Pokemon Box from anywhere.

Box your starter if you want a challenge. The starter is broken as fuck.

Change the battle mode to "Set" if you want more of a challenge and play like it's tournament rules. (you get no notification of what Trainer's Pokemon is coming next and no free switch into it).

Make sure you're using the highest level Pokeballs possible when catching. Getting a "Great" or "Excellent" throw only increases the XP gain, it doesn't increase catch rate. You have to rely on what Pokeball you're using + Berries to influence that.

Talk to someone in the Pokemon centre in Cerulean City (the city with the 2nd gym) and they'll have your Pikachu learn Zippy Zap. Which is basically easy mode for everything bar grass/ground types.

You shouldn't really need to resort to that though as the game is very rewarding and rarely annoying or obtrusive even for newcomers.

The only advice I can give is that the game will be very easy so feel free to use any Pokémon that you like even if it's a weak one
