Rural America goes to college?
They turn you liberal in college!
Touché

It is quickly trending that way:

Because wealth is so tied to access to education and education is so tied to access to wealth, the whole feedback loop will just get worse and worse.

I was starting to lean that way after some thought. The cost of education has skyrocketed so fast that, because of differences in pay due to cost of living a suburbanite can sort of afford it but the rural person says, "Fuck it, how mch could I get paid anyway?"

It was just that, I keep hearing everyone is moving to the cities so I would think that'd skew the average distance higher. Unless, of course, they're moving from the burbs to the nearest city, I suppose. Would be interesting to see a map that showed who was going from where to where.

Off the cuff suggestion here, but nationalize Twitter to save journalism. Subject it to gov't oversight, crack down on harassment as the threat it is, and it's free for people (IE journalists) to register and tweet information.

Of course that doesn't help their paychecks. Hmmm. Needs workshopping.

How is Pflugerville btw. Im moving there next week

It is the best of the Austin suburbs. Highly educated, most diverse - more than Austin proper, spacious. With that said:
1. There isn't much entertainment, you'll be driving to Austin and Round Rock for that.
2. If you haven't already picked a place, keep in mind traffic patterns. Seemingly 100k people are moving into new houses around lake pflugerville, and all of them go through a road to 130/45. Easily adds 20 minutes at rush hour.
3. Crime is up a bit, but we do have tons of patrolling cops with nearby stations so get a security system for ease of mind.

Most houses have fiber direct, so internet is 400 to 1000 mbps.

Well, the main point of those venture capital groups is to strip mine those papers for profit. The Post is just a capstone for Bezos.

I don't believe he owns WAPO out of keeping a relic alive. Owning a news org is one of the best ways to know where all the skeletons are in everyones closets. He bought in at a great time and is a business man.

Yeah, there's definitely multiple reasons for the buy, and I think if he were significantly poorer the story would be different, but it's good to see he's not just squeezing the life out of it for more cash.

This wouldn't fly in any way, would it? The President using Executive Power to take land from rightful owners to build a wall is the sort of thing militia groups literally exist for. And judges wouldn't be able to stop laughing at it in court.

The solution to white supremacy, sexual harassment and fake news on Twitter is to put Donald Trump in charge of it?

The Federal Court system closes down in a week. There won't be any way to challenge this in court until the government re-opens.

At this point it's about saving face. Eminent domain is the least of his concerns right now.

I will look into that last one.

We managed to secure a place on Monday.

Joni Ernst discussed her marriage and divorce with Bloomberg in August and at greater length in a phone call Tuesday night, when she also first disclosed her rape as a college student. At times as she described her past, Ernst cried so hard that she was barely intelligible.

Imagine going through such a traumatic experience and still standing with a president who by his ex-wife's testimony is a rapist and at the very least is a serial sexual assaulter.

I'm probably completely off base here but dont US courts run out of money February 1st and if so, would trump be able to have any executive action enforced until the shutdown ends? I can see him doing some really awful shit knowing that he wont be stopped.

His executive order would also not be able to happen because the government is shut down and as soon as its opened it would be challenged.

If that's all it takes to defeat democracy we deserve to burn.

But seriously, I would hope that it would be considered an essential case.

Edit:

We managed to secure a place on Monday.

Also I can tell you the 4 restaurants that aren't chicken tenders:
1. Brothertons black iron bbq's. Top tier Texas style bbq with a chef that makes great sandwiches.
2. Taste of Ethiopia, a surprising gem. if you are an omnivore I recommend dinner over lunch, or if vegetarian lunch.
3. Iron fish sushi. Surprisingly good Japanese food in suburbia.
4. Cafe Eden. Small and beautifully decorated Korean fusion restaurant. You can get a great meal here for $12. Not as high end as Austin's Korean food, but for the price it is great. I fear they will close soon as they never seem to have more than 3 tables.

That's it. The rest of pflugervilles food is hot garbage.

Would it not be challenged in State court first? It'd be a Federal action, but surely the State would intercede on behalf of the owners?

It depends on which particular flavor of fucknuttery he decides to go with. But the state would be Texas, so odds are that a state court would just congratulate him.

South Carolina
My wife grew up in a rural area. Many of her friends and family didn't go to college, but even among the ones who did, few moved very far. Among the college educated, many settled in the nearest city of any appreciable size while others stayed in the country. Among those who didn't go to college almost all are living in the country. Many of her friends and family don't really seem to understand why she's not interested in moving back.

Other than the aforementioned help from/with parents, there's also this, the crab-bucket mentality. Resentment, naturally, makes them hate those with the talents and drive to GTFO to like, Charleston or OKC or what have you to a solid life. White ghetto is a thing.

I don't know how to describe the expression Carter Page permanently wears on his face. But boy...it's something.

I still say he's doing obfuscating stupidity. Notice how Nigel Farange and others put on shit-eating grins or other goofy behaviors too. It defuses peoples' read on body language.

Oh boy, Cummings is calling in Flynn Jr. and Gorka.

Did she say a peep while the whole Kavanaugh shit was going down? It 1000% sucks what happened to her but........it doesn't feel like she's especially sympathetic to issues of sexual abuse (unless I've missed stuff she's said/done).

Given the lack of readership in the past decade I can see a mass consolidation happening. This is not good for anyone as most of the major city papers are not independently owned anymore.

I've grown to suspect the future is regional news organizations. They'll take the small papers, smash them together with the big city dailies and call it a day.

But those regional papers will be heavily big city-centric, so if you're in suburbia or exurbia, good luck. TV stations already operate like this, where smaller towns go unreported until a disaster strikes.

I was picturing more of a Federal Reserve thing, independent and all. But I can't get around journalists not being paid. Ultimately, you gotta make good reporting profitable. Not sure how one does that.

Interesting thing I just read - my pflugerville TX Facebook page has a thread about being frustrated about losing insurance and paychecks. Not very partisan, a few hits at trump and McConnell, but overall 98% are in an agreement and supportive in a city purple with slight blue hue. What really surprised me was someone came in with talking points bashing dems, the admins told him to cool it as they joined 1 hour ago, and then another user noted they had their location as Lubbock which is hundreds of miles away, and the guy changed to pflugerville just before getting banned. God damn, Russian trolls in small city groups.

My gf finally got me to sign up for Instagram. Within one week of creating it and not enabling 2FA, I tried to login one day and it said my password was wrong. Its my general one I use for sites that dont matter. I reset it and saw the email had been changed to a .ru domain. That creeped me tf out.

Damn. I don't have 2fa on insta and I haven't been hacked ever. Like at least 5 years now. Was your password some easy nonsense?
