Wow, this is huge.
I'm guessing those will be coming on Switch too, and might be a part of rumored direct in January?
That sounds likely to me. I can't imagine Nintendo exclusively releasing new HD versions of their games on another company's hardware.

I'm probably gonna wind up disappointed, but now I'm excited for January. :(

Aren't Wii and GCN games pretty similar as far as emulation go? that's why Dolphin does both right? so I imagine if they've got a Wii emulator running they've almost certainly got a GCN one running too.
The issue with GameCube games would be the triggers, since they were analog on GameCube but are digital on all Switch controllers. Maybe they can find a way to work around that though.

Wow. "Third-party" Nintendo titles. Anything to tap that coveted Chinese market I guess.

F'real tho, if they have old games up and running on the same GPU as the Switch...

What if they're porting the games over, instead of emulating a Wii?
I mean, they've already ported two games from Wii U, which is basically 6 Gamecubes duck taped together, am i rite.

Somewhat surprising. Nintendo has finally gone third party.

Mostly surprising if they plan to push Switch in China.

I'm curious how extensive the Wii game library will be. If it is substantial then wow. VC in third party hardware before Switch. Also, curious how game purchases will be tied. How do accounts work for Shield?

We did it - Nintendo went third party!!! /s
This really bodes well for Nintendo. Between Switch's newfound popularity with console gamers in China, the simultaneous releases, and new partnerships all points to a bright future as long as they play their cards correctly.

I wonder if this was part of the deal that they made with nvidia for two-decade long partnership.

Also, not to sound stupid, but I'd really like to see how these apks run in other devices.
Don't a lot of the bigger Shield games run pretty poorly on non-Shield devices? I'm pretty ignorant on the subject, but I vaguely remember people having trouble getting the Half-Life 2 and Portal ports running on anything other than a Shield. I might be misremembering though.

Not that it's a 1:1 comparison, but if Nintendo only intends for the games to run on the Shield console, I'd imagine they'll be optimized specifically for it.

That's true, I hope they allow stuff like button mapping for partial pull and full pull, for example map the z button which brings up the map in Sunshine to select, which the GCN didn't have, then L and R can be partial while ZL and ZR can be full. but they'll probably just not release the games that rely too much on it like Sunshine and F-Zero, which would suck :(.

What does mean for Nintendo bringing the Switch to China? Or is the Shield just going to be China's Switch stand-in, a bit like the iQue Player was for the N64, rather then selling the Switch console directly? (The hardware certainly seams close enough to make that an option, at least.)

Are they actually in HD or are people just guessing?
Probably a good sign for GCN and Wii Switch VC too

They are running in 1080p HD according to Nvidia. But that's the only spec they noted. So no idea what other improvements / changes vs original Wii version there is.

I should also note that this was a China specific deal from the start and I would not expect these games to be accessible on US / EU version of Nvidia Shield. It also does not mean that Nintendo will bring Wii games to Switch or anything like that. Basically I would temper expectations on what this means for Switch / Nvidia Shield in the West.

1499yuan for the Nvidia Shield + 68yuan for games

Holy crap it is a budget console, time to import.

SMG and TP have some waggle and pointing involved though
Twilight Princess didn't have anything of that nature on GameCube though. Could the controls for Galaxy be changed to make them unnecessary? Serious question, I haven't played it yet.

Also, I wonder if the map in TP will be reversed like on Wii or not.

Yeah, the Switch does have the advantage of more buttons. We'll see. If this is what they're doing for Wii games on Shield (and if this leads to Switch ports of them), maybe there's a chance that GameCube games would be ports rather than emulations, which would allow them to rework games as needed to get the controls as good as they can.

Sure, just mean that it should be technically possible.
I'd guess GameCube game in Hd to avoid any mix up with Wii games on Shield

What better way to get people spending all those Christmas gift eshop cards than announcing Wii games on the Switch at the January direct!

Are these emulated? I thought Dolphin was playable but not ideal on Shield?

Personally I hope they're actual native X1 conversions with adjusted controls for gamepads.

Wonder how long it takes before these get ported to Android phones and other devices?

Or maybe not.

I am just talking out of my ass.

Pointing in SMG would work perfectly if mapped to the right stick I think.

If they are emulated you can assume Nintendo could possibly make a better emulator performance wise simply because they have the actual data behind the Wii hardware, the dolphin devs don't have that. For some reason I doubt Nintendo would put in the work for native conversions unless they were also going to release them on Switch as remasters.

having played it through on Dolphin mapping it to the right stick it... works but it can be pretty annoying, it always either felt too slow or too imprecise, never could find a good balance, if they could increase the area that the pointer covers so you don't have to be as precise it would be fine I think, eventually I started using my Steam Controller which felt pretty good mapping it to the touch pad.

Galaxy heavily implements waggle and pointer controls.

I guess I can see them mapping the spin to a button instead of waggle, like in 3D World for Rosalina.

But for clicking on pull stars and star bits, I'm curious how they work around pointer controls.
