📖 About:

A Hat in Time is a cute-as-heck 3D platformer featuring a little girl who stitches hats for wicked powers.

A little girl and her spaceship
In A Hat in Time you play as a tiny space-travelling girl with a big tophat. Her adventure is halted when all her fuel, the Time Pieces, is lost and scattered across a nearby planet. Hat Kid must now jump, fight and stitch new hats to make her way into every nook and cranny of this new world in order to restore her fuel and resume her journey. On her way, she'll bump into the menacing Mafia of Cooks, the goofy birds of Dead Bird Studio, the spooky shadows of Subcon Forest, and more!

Murder on a train! Parades! Trespassing in a movie studio?
Every mission in A Hat in Time is unique! At one moment you'll be solving the Murder on the Owl Express by finding clues and interrogating the locals, the next moment you'll be the band marshal in The Big Parade, or sneaking through the bird-run Dead Bird Studio!

Small child, giant worlds
Jump freely around in 5 massive worlds with new adventures to discover around every corner! Just like any child, Hat Kid loves to climb and explore, no mountain is too big for her sense of adventure. She can do multiple jump moves, as well as climb walls, and swing over gaps!

Cute hats, magical yarn and snappy badges
By finding and collecting rare magical yarn, Hat Kid can stitch new cute hats with a variety of abilities, including a witch hat that allows her to cook explosive concoctions, and a wooden ghost mask that allows her to peek into other dimensions. Hats can become even more powerful, by attaching badges that are found, sold and traded by the locals!

Community-funded, community-focused
A Hat in Time was successfully funded on Kickstarter, reaching nearly 10 times its goal! In order to celebrate our community, A Hat in Time is releasing with full modding and Steam Workshop support, an in-game screenshot mode, and more!

Just finished it a day ago. A loveletter to Sunshine-esque platformers, great controls and so much care put into all the levels.
I'm sad this JonTron thing put some people of it, though I understand their resevations.

This game is great. I'm still only at the third level, but so far it's been a blast. I do wish the developers would have issued a statement about the Jontron thing. It leaves a somewhat bad taste in my mouth, but the game is just so fun. I backed it on Kickstarter, so they already had my money before any of that stuff came to light. Oh well, I'm definitely going to keep playing it.

Beat this game a week or so ago and just watched Vinny beat it as well.

Basically gonna get overshadowed by Mario now so it came out at the right time.

i honestly never heard of this game until a week ago.

I kind of wish I knew of it ages ago, because I would have held off buying Yooka Laylee for this.

It looks infinitely better.

Trying to fight the urge to buy a Switch only for Mario, and decided to give A Hat in Time a shot. Thus far it feels great. The art direction is a bit too much on the cute side for me, but the game itself plays out great. I does a good job at soothing my Mario cravings at a reasonable fair price. I am only early into the mafia planet, but from what I¨ve read the game gets better when I´m done with that area.

Does anyone know how mods will play out with the GOG version?

I heard that some team members are homophobic, is he one of em? Since I personally feel a bit reluctant to support homophobic developer

I didn't realise it released on the 6th! I signed up to their mailing list but didn't hear anything.

Excited to play this, I didn't enjoy Yooka Laylee but this seems more refined.

I love the charm and style this game has. Gonna wait to see if it gets a cheeky little discount during the Steam Christmas Sale as I've got quite a big backlog as it is.

I waited for this game for years, and I am utterly confident in saying that the game that pushed the boundaries of the 3D platformer in the last 20 years is this game. It just runs in another plane than the usual Nintendo IP, as if it took inspirations from other, less well-regarded, but equally fascinating games such as Croc (lol believe it or not), Ape Escape and the Spyro trilogy on the PS1.

It's like the whole game was a "what if" situation. What if there was a 3D platformer in a world where Mario stopped existing after 64.

Astounding game.

JonTron isn't a developer but rather a YouTube personality who was asked to voice one of the NPCs in the game. The issue surrounding the development team is that they didn't cast him aside like Playtonic did and instead refused to engage with the community on the matter. If you consider that unacceptable and wouldn't feel comfortable supporting the game, that's perfectly fine, but -- and this is just a general comment -- this thread isn't the appropriate venue to dive into the topic as it's tangential and would most definitely derail discussion.

Hmm...it's 39,99$ CAD on PS4, not sure if its worth it at that price but at the same time it really interest me. >_<

JonTron came forward recently, well it's actually more like half a year ago, by saying things no sane company should support. There are credible rumours the main person behind AHiT is treating artists like crap, like asking for an "art test" before a hire, then saying no but still using the thus acquired art and other stuff to avoid paying them.
I love this game, and I don't quite regret having kickstarted it, but I don't see myself crowdfunding another game of theirs, knowing what I know now.

What is up with the crazy depth of field effects in this game?

Game has some nice style, but after spending a ton of time with Mario Odyssey the controls are definitely looser than I'd like. Looking forward to playing more though

30 FPS on consoles huh. Kinda disappointing, I guess I'll play this on PC

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, I was waiting for confirmation on this before I decided which version to get. From the PC reviews, the controls are excellent and very responsive at 60fps, so dropping to 30fps will have a bit of an impact on how tight the controls are, plus after Mario Odyssey, 3D platformers just feel much better at 60fps.

Played an hour on PS4 this morning.
It's cute!
It honestly feels weird to play this cause I back it a couple days after the KS originally launched, haha.

That's probably my number one complaint about the game. The post processing effects are overdone in some levels. You can edit config files to remove DoF on PC but it's clear that many areas were designed around it so removing it isn't always an improvement. I just left it on in the end.

I really like this game, Era. ..and this feels blasphemous but I definitely prefer this soundtrack to Odyssey's. It may not reach the highs of Odyssey's One-Up Girl but it's far more consistent and memorable.

This game combined all of my favorite parts of collectathons with brilliant writing and a great soundtrack. It is easily in my top five of 2017 and is really reminiscent of the Paper Mario series tonally.

Does anyone knows how to disable the UI in photo mode on consoles? It doesn't seems to go away on its own and shows up when I take a screenshot.

I was so excited for this but after playing it, it doesn't hold a candle to lower budget indie 3D platform games like Poi and Skylar & Plux for me. The former nails the Super Mario 64 style (only a couple boss fights were pretty meh but I'm not fond of the way A Hat in Time handles those either anyway, they look grander but their mechanics are equally off to me) while the latter gets the visual fidelity to match, yet with a more third party style of game with its only real downside being length and how the one NPC race looks like an amateur's 3D model compared to the rest of the purdy visuals it has. Bring on Poi 2/Skylar & Plux 2! I played all three on PC by the way. I'm going to try The Last Tinker at some point, I don't like its art style but I wasn't fond of S&P's either and that turned out to be great, plus its developers made another game that is great (but completely different), Shadow Tactics.

Huh, that's interesting you say that because I was checking out poi the other day on the Switch eshop and thought it looked a bit blah, but if you're saying it's good I may give it a second look.

It sounds like I'm enjoying Hat in time a lot more than you, however.

I think you'll dig it, it has 94% positive reviews on Steam as well (but with less than 300 reviews). I never thought it looked blah, I found it very charming if clearly low budget. It's pretty easy for the most part though, I think they added certain moves like the dive after the fact just because people wanted it to feel even more like Mario 64 but then didn't rework the levels for it and overall in a lot of cases it's almost like you can bypass certain challenges with the moves available to you. I might be mis-remembering though, don't quote me on that. Still an enjoyable ride and packed with side activities, not all equally polished. It was made by a handful of people it seems. The other games in my post have pretty solid user ratings as well, with equally small numbers of reviewers however (S&P the least of the bunch, I didn't expect that since visually it's the most high end). Is it 60fps on Switch?

It's a very fun game, beat it a few weeks ago. Only thing that kinda disappointed me was the ending if you played the beta.
The part you play as an adult hat kid walking into a bookstore is completely removed.I wanted to know about that and the setting that looked like an old European town.

I bought the game a while back and I never really had a chance to sit down with it. Playing the game, I'm finding the mouse and keyboard controls fantastic. Having total control over the camera is fantastic. Ever since Mario 64, trying to play these kind of games with a controller has been a series of compromises where you're never fully in control of both camera and character. As for the game itself, it certainly has charm. It's reasonably polished. The music is nice. The voice acting is pretty decent, and I don't really get how some reviews complained about it.

The game feels very... comfy.

About Time someone had the courage to make this OT (I can't make new topics yet)

A Hat in Time is just fucking fantastic!

Great graphics, cute art style, good audio, right controls, fun and richly detailed worlds...

Its easily the best Indei game of the year. If it wasn't a little on the short side though, it would be even better than Mario Odyssey.

Finally put some time into the game on Xbone, cleared every level up to about midway through Chapter 3 so far. I went in not really knowing what to expect since I basically just pledged money for a copy in 2013 and ignored it for 4 years, but I'd say it's pretty good. My favorite parts are the underwater Time Rifts, that music + the pure 3D platforming gameplay is great. Still, when it comes to KS revivals I have to say I enjoyed Yooka-Laylee a lot more, I just prefer a more open style of collectathon to the linear Sunshine-esque mission based structure.

This is such a fun game, really gives me vibes of the N64 platformers I grew up playing. It runs so smooth on PC, I can't imagine playing 30 FPS on console.

The hype in this thread has me considering trying the game out. Wish it had a retail copy so I could resell if it ends up not clicking with me though.

I particularly like the comments that the game seems to draw influences from the other, less-remembered 3D platformers of the 90s and early 00s. There is a tendency nowadays to remember 3D platformers as Mario, Crash/Spyro, and the Rare games. That does a disservice to games like Croc and Gex, among others, who were also notable at the time but haven't had the same staying power.

I'll look up some more YouTube gameplay videos. It's just a shame Yooka-Laylee was the one with the retail release instead of this one.

I'll be real, I did not grow up with N64 collect-athons. I had a PS1. Ive been craving for a fun platformer like Spyro the Dragon but I really really do not like games in the style of Yooka-Laylee or Banjo where it just feels like there is a giant map littered with stuff to pick up. Is it worth looking into this game as someone who finished the N-Sane trilogy and is craving more?

Definitely. Check out few gameplays/reviews and decide for yourself, but I had tons of fun with it and if you liked Spyro there's high chance you'll like some worlds in AHiT too (Worlds are really different from each other).
