Mementos
Seems like not that many people on here fuck with Rap and R&B going by the Spotify thread and the albums of the year thread from three months back.
Year for music has been pretty great for me. Found a ton of good shit. Listened to the most I've ever had. Could've listened to a few more other genres though. Could've used some more foreign music, preferably traditional music, some classical, and some more rock.

My current playlist for the year. Currently at 52 songs. Probably won't be adding any more.

Hot take: if Revival ends up widely-panned, the album that comes after that will be better than 4:44 and a return to form

If Revival ends up widely panned, I'm not sure if Eminem raps again tbh.

And what would a return to form even look like at this point. Dude needs to lock in with The Alchemist and do something new. Blows my mind that the guy who made SSLP and MMLP completely avoids off kilter and atmospheric production coming from a city surrounded by producers who specialize in this stuff.

My theory is that Em is stuck in the late 90s early 00s formula of how to push an album. I think that's pretty plausible. That and being surrounded by yes-men. (and when does it become fair to ask how much blame Rick Rubin gets?)
If Revival is shit and is widely-panned, perhaps it'll finally be the wake-up call that makes him realize he can make any album he damn well pleases, and that leads to him making a modern classic.

I understand the possible confusion on my assuming that Eminem can't make the album he wants to now. Of course he can, but I still think that's rooted in his idea of what an album looks like. And to him that means a radio-hit lead-off single with crossover appeal and a couple more to allay the publishers. ...only he hasn't had to do that for years yet he keeps doing it
I don't know. The talent is still there, he just has bad people around him I think and is rooted in the past.

I mean, imagine an album of Bass Brothers, Dre, and Alchamist beats with features from 50, Snoop, and Westside Gunn. You think that would turn out shit? I sure don't.

Eminem is done and had been done... He wouldn't know how to make a good album himself whatsoever and would need a heavy handed producer and executive producer to really reign him around one solid concept. The dream has been dead for over a decade.

Oh it's totally a dream...but as long as he's putting out albums I'll hold onto that shred of hope
I completely agree with being reigned in around one concept though. Would be interesting to hear a concept album from him, or even just a return to some of his horrorcore roots, although I guess that's kinda what Relapse was (of course it also had stupid radio bullshit songs...like wtf)

J Dilla made his MPC3000 musical.

There's a halo of reverence around J Dilla, a producer and beatmaker from Detroit who made some of the most fascinating and influential beats in hip hop history. Before his early death in 2006, J Dilla worked with countless artists and producers - from Erykah Badu and Janet Jackson to Busta Rhymes and Madlib - and developed an off-kilter style of rhythm and sampling that transcended the machine he used to create music, the Akai Midi Production Center, otherwise known as the MPC.

Eminem is legitimately not a good rapper anymore. The question isn't whether he can make a good album, the question isn't even when he's still got it, because we know he doesn't. His on the mic have skills have actively regressed in addition to not really evolving over the course of his career. Can't flow, no good insights or unique perspectives, no interesting references, songwriting ability has flatlined (s/o to yet another song with Skylar Gray on this upcoming album), mediocre production choices.. what exactly is left to look forward to in an Eminem verse, let alone a song?

If I were an Eminem stan, I'd pretty mad.

Guy comes out with a lead single that teases an album full off throwback songs like "Stan" and instead you get an album full of "Love The Way You Lie"s and "Lighters".

I'd bet the Jeezy album that comes out that day will be miles better than "Revival."

J Cole stays talking about fecal matter.

I can't wait to see brockhampton again. Being in the crowd during HEAT and BUMP was something serious.
