Hmm ok I'll give it a shot.

Also. what do you mean by shoot in 4k? I think whenever I shoot it automatically is 1080.

I think he means that you should shoot yourself in the center so that way you look directly into the camera, the 4k is for you to crop your frame so you are on the left or right of the frame yet not losing any quality at 1080p, of course you need to put your phone a little bit far than normal so you have room to crop

Price by far is the major aspect for thinking of going that route. Not really interested with Micro 4/3s cameras and FF video is too pricey for me. Don't know much about Sony crop cameras.

M43 is great for video though. Like legitimately a $500 gx85 would probably be a better 4k video camera than a Fuji. Panasonic is all about video.

I'm only aware of the one 85 1.8 that they make, but I guess they've been making Sony AF lenses here and there.
Just making sure I didn't miss some AF 85 from them. Either way, I doubt anyone is comparing those because people in the market for a cheap MF lens would never consider the 90. Also, the 90 is supposedly one of the fastest AF performers in the X stable.

Plenty of Samyang users buy the lenses for reasons other than cheap, and weigh their optics vs AF lenses; the FF 85 1.4 was compared with Canikon 85's for example.

Yeah, that's what I figured after I started using it during my friends gig. Also, what's with that battery life!? I mean, damn! That's crap battery life. I don't know how other mirrorless do, but I think I'm just spoiled with DSLR battery life.
This is why I bought the battery grip. It's not that massive of a problem with 3 batteries to work off of.

The 90 is a pretty good lens. Sometimes the AF takes a bit to catch onto something, but I think that really depends on how close I am and if I'm going from far focus to near focus.

They're fine. If you can't go there just mail your stuff in if I remember right. I traded in for my X-T2 and Nikon D4 over there.

Lmao I'm in Texas so I'm definitely not gonna be able to go to their store.

Also while I'm here, anybody have any thoughts on an a6500, a7rII, and the Panny G85?

IBIS, 4K, and log video, that's pretty much what I really want with my next camera. So if y'all have any other suggestions, feel free to shoot them my way.

For some reason, the fact that your statement indicates that 'going in to the store' is the default choice, made me immediately think of driving 13 hours to the 'local' adorama store to trade gear in.
I don't know where he currently is. I know Jong lives in Dallas, but maybe he's doing a vacation or something. I live in the same state as Adorama so my trade ins would be a lot more instant than his. Also I said "if you can't go there" as general advice for anybody that happened to look at that post for advice.

Now I'm just starting to think that me and everybody else speak a different form of English since nobody ever can tell what the hell I'm trying to say. Based on what I've been shooting lately I'd say get the A7RII. The G85 is fine as well though I don't touch 4k, but that's probably the best way to go about it since it has less of a chance to over heat. I honestly think this purchase depends mainly if you're using it solely for video work. If it's for hybrid work get the A7RII, if it's strictly a video camera the G85 is fine as well.

Lol I perfectly understood it, I was just saying that I'm too far away from the store haha.

Anyway, yeah this would probably be for video work coz I'm going to keep my D800 for picture work. I'm kinda unsure about the G85 coz I don't want to switch to another lens system but at the same time, it is really cheap and it seems like the kit lens is decent enough and has good resale value for when I'm ready to upgrade.

That said the G85 is really appealing to me. I've been mulling this purchase for the last month or so and the G85 still hasn't left that shortlist.

On the other hand, I do wish the Fuji X-T30 has IBIS coz that'd probably what I'd get instead. I had a chance to play with an X-T3 a while back and Eterna is legitimately amazing.

You can get the X-H1 or you can adapt the lenses you already have onto the A7RII since I'm quite sure you will by manually focusing any way or you can just get the kit lens or the 24-70F4 for it. Like to be honest you got options with the A7RII, I wasn't planning on making that thing one of my main cameras, but the image output is too good not to use. You should probably rent to see what you really like, though the A7RII like all cameras takes some adjusting to. I had to shoot that thing for weeks straight to really get into a groove with it.

X-T30 plus a small gimbal too bulky?

Not really but I'm eventually planning to get a Atomos Ninja or whatever in the future so I'd need a Ronin or something to hold everything.

That's basically what I'm doing right now with my a7 and is what I'd do if I get the a6500 or a7rII which is why IBIS is crucial for me. I need IBIS for the Nikon glass that I'm using... which is also why I can't really get the X-T30.

I already have the Sony 28-70 kit lens so I'm definitely going to keep that if I go with a7rII.

But yeah you're right, I do need to play around with an a7rII. I imagine it's as difficult to use as my D800... coz I hated that thing in the first few months I got it lol.

As for the X-H1, I've looked at it and I want a kit lens to go along with it so that puts it out of my price range lol.

If IBIS is really important, go with the G85. Their IBIS is great (largely due to the much smaller sensor). Honestly, Sony IBIS helps a lot for stills and when the lens is not stabilized, but in video, it's not a big deal if the lens itself is stabilized.

Check out this comparison of the a6400 vs. a6500.

Bottom line, if you're looking to get into video with Sony, it looks like the a6400 is going to be a good choice (at least until they introduce their "pro" APS-C camera) and the price is hard to beat.

Can't wait for it to got $800 used and below lol. Kind of makes me wish I waited on the X-T3, granted I know why I got it, but it's not even my most used camera anymore since I got waylaid by a Sony A7RII sale.
I'll be totally honest, I'm still debating if the Sony ecosystem is for me. Fuji is in an extremely sweet spot of performance and image quality. Some of my best work was made with ease on Fuji. There's no question the Sony is in another league though. Just not sure what I do justifies the spend.

Yeah I can easily see how that's the case. At some point I need to have a nice walk around day with the X-T3 since I do my best work I think when I'm just walking around, I think the Fuji ecosystem is the best for street photography and the like, even does great portrait work. Granted I also think you're a good enough photographer to make whatever work for you to be honest. Sony's main problem is their stuff is too expensive for what it is.

Whichever company introduces a high-end APS-C camera with great battery life is going to get my dollars. I'm hoping it's Sony so I can just use my lenses, but I like Fuji a lot, too.

I would only get that to use my 70-200 for birding to be honest. That whole proposition turns into what glass you have and I have a very good Fuji ecosystem and the battery life doesn't bother me that much because I run around with three batteries in the camera. I'd honestly have to shoot a 10 hour event I think to drain all of them.

If Sony releases the rumored a7000 and it's all it's cracked up to be (mini a9 with awesome EVF), then I'm eventually going to grab the 100-400 GM for sure.

150-600 f/8.4 (equivalent) would be awesome for some birds in flight.

A mini A9 with no relevant lens ecosystem would really be a waste of a great camera, but I get what you mean. Would I trade my X-T's and my lenses for that? No.

Because I hate myself, I keep checking B&H to see if the Fuji lenses are still on sale...and they are.

16-55 for $899
50-140 for $1199

I'm pretty convinced no matter what I'm not keeping my Canon 100-400 for now. It adapts poorly to Sony and my interest in the R system is waning hard after seeing some of the choices made on the RP. There is also an RF 100-400 in the works that would make way more sense on an RF mount body.

I'm also totally on the fence about buying a Sony 100-400 just because of the price alone. That's where the Fuji 50-140 + 2X tele comes into play in being a crazy good value proposition.

And...while it seems so silly and not at all a thing to make an ecosystem choice on...I like my Helios 44 1000x more on crop than on FF.

I should probably make it a mission to use my X-T3 more...maybe when the weather gets warmer I guess. I love my Fuji's so I didn't want to trade them in hence why I started with the A7R2, my wallet still hates that decision, but I still have access to a ton of stuff that I like using. RF mount would be great if it wasn't tied to a Canon body.

At the end of the day, I feel very much like I did when I was putzing between iOS and Android...and this is a totally oversimplified statement...

But Fuji is much closer to iOS where it's easy to pick up, does the thing you want easily and quickly, and is actually fun to use, and Sony is like Android where it's technically superior and much more customizable but at the end of the day you just end up fiddling with it more than you actually USE it.

Again, very rough metaphor.

That's probably why I like the Fuji's better for video work. Fuji isn't known for video, but it's a lot easier for me to work with. It's the same for stills, but the general interface on Fuji is better granted I'm pretty used to the A7RII these days. That being said I think I like editing the Sony files more than the Fuji files.

It was always fun to just jack up that shadows slider for a moment or zoom in like 300% just to see all the detail reveal itself and be like, "what the fuck?"

I have so much shadow room to work with on the A7R2 that it's not even funny. I think just comparing my portrait work that the A7R2 is way better than the X-T3 in that regard. Granted I shoot and edit both cameras pretty damn well. I just miss stacking the Fuji picture profiles onto my edits.

After much consideration, I've just pulled the trigger on the Canon 85mm 1.8. I hope it will arrive before the Carnival.

I really want the 135mm F2, but that Will have to wait a little bit.

Now my 50mm 1.4 is in a weird position. It was my first lens, and probably the one I would choose if I had to keep just one of them, but my 35mm f2 is better at night when I go out with my friends (because of IS), the 85 will be better for portraits and the 24-105 will be better for general use when I don't really know what I'm going for.

For video it's beats the tar out of your D800, I don't even use my D810 for video these days, DSLR for video is not a thing I do at this point and is the reason why I currently have 3 mirrorless cameras. I pretty much think after setting the custom buttons and everything else to something that you're comfortable with you should be fine with the A7RII. The only thing I hate doing on my A7R2 is changing AF points, other than that I'm fine with it.

My Tamron 28-75 has the old screw type AF(where it's based on the body) and that thing makes a lot of noise so I just use my D800 as a B-cam for video. Plus it's goddamn heavy to lug around lmao. I put it on my camera cage and even when I use two hands to carry the cage, it feels like it's 20 pounds haha.

The biggest issues I had with the D800 was of course the controls(since I was exclusively using an A7 before I got it) and that I also had to tweak how I shot pictures. Unlike the relatively featherweight A7, I can't just prop up the D800 in one hand to get a picture... I felt like I had to actually get in position coz the weight and ginormous megapixels made a lot of my pics seem blurry(tho this could also be because of that OLPF thing).

I'm gonna see if one of my friends is willing to let me borrow an A7RII and if not, I'll rent it out.

You can get a clean used X-H1 for $950 now if that makes a difference.

It does actually... I'd really prefer to get a kit lens with it or something similar so I can just throw it in my bag and not worry too much about accounting for crop factor and my FF glass. But I'll keep it in the shortlist for now... will need to do some research and watch videos about it.

If IBIS is really important, go with the G85. Their IBIS is great (largely due to the much smaller sensor). Honestly, Sony IBIS helps a lot for stills and when the lens is not stabilized, but in video, it's not a big deal if the lens itself is stabilized.

Obviously I won't be using the IBIS for walking around but seeing the difference between the two is quite staggering... the a6500 looks like a chump lmao.

Anyway, those videos are basically solidifying the G85 as the best thing out of all my choices so far. I keep the A7RII on my list coz that's what I really want but accounting for budget and my needs, I do think that I can easily get away with the G85. Let's see what happens after I send Adorama my gear... hopefully my A7 is still worth something lol.

Yeah, the G85 is a solid choice for video, small and light even with a lens, and great IBIS means you an actually handhold it and get stable footage.

The downsides are poor ISO performance and unreliable autofocus (which hurts the whole handheld shooting proposition), so it really depends on what you're looking to shoot.

LMAO. 😭😭😭

I'm not expecting much... if I can get slightly over $350 for it I might just bite. Anything less than that, I'll try selling it on fleabay or something.

I'm pretty good with manual focus so AF doesn't really matter to me, but ISO/low light is something that I'm definitely hesitant about migrating over to m4/3. I've shot a couple of weddings with my A7 at 6400 ISO and it's still quite passable IMO. If it can even reach close to that then I think the G85 is definitely the way to go for me.

You can probably get $500 out of it on Ebay. Regarding high iso M43...look into it.
