I would want to be one of those random village NPCs that just smiles and says, "Hello!". Like a medieval Wal-Mart greeter.

Adventuring is a long and difficult road. Smiles are proven to be infectious and brighten up people's day. If that's all I can contribute to the quest than so be it 🙂

"Would you like to be trapped in an eternal time loop with me?"

I only ever talk about domestic tasks or politics. So I'm not sure if I'd talk about how the [local main quest] is making it hard to do the chores, or expropriative anarchy. Probably depends on if I saw the dude that just broke into my house break all my pots and riffle through my dresser.

I haven't played that game in years, and have the exact rhythm and intonation of that line seared into my brain.

Why, I'd be the lovable recurring character with all the best jokes, naturally! Gotta stand out from the crowd.

To accomplish that, I suppose I'd randomly exclaim free associations cluing into the player's progress.

I'll paint a picture. You go into a house where a bunch of kids path around in a circle, in the middle of the circle is a woman. When you talk to her she says "I need help! Where's my lazy husband?"

You go around the back of the house and there's a dude just chilling back there. When you talk to him he says "Don't tell my wife."

That dude is me.

"You need a rocket to get into space. I wish I had one."

I'd wanna be the NPC who hangs around the front of town and says "Welcome to ____ town!"

I'd stand next to another NPC who gives out an easy kill quest in the very first town.

"You know, I have no idea why you're interested in killing 10 field mice for a block of rotten cheese, but I won't judge."

Then, after the rotten cheese leads to inevitable trading quests that secretly earns the most powerful weapon in the game...

"...you got the Legendary God Slayer from what? RPG world logic is stupid!"

This reminds me of how talking to some NPCs in Snowman in Earthbound Beginnings would infect the party with a cold lol.
