I live in a giant bucket.
I love this game, but man, it has some lousy villains.
They did a decent job foreshadowing Alexei, but the whole "lol I was behind everything" shtick is way too abrupt/underdeveloped and even by Zaude I still don't have a bead on what he's after. Not the biggest fan of Yeagar or Zagi, either.

Omg patty is even more broken than rita with the right setup. Her critical moment is when the game goes batshit insane.

I am slaughtering brutal in 30sek right now (he has 400k hp)

Patty + Rita has already made some interesting moments and I'm only level 48 or so :P (aka two large scale spells going off at once)
It's fun seeing an attack go off for 65k damage on a boss at that level, but alas it's only a 1% chance of happening lol

Hmm, if it's before you even went to the final dungeon then Flynn recently joined permanently so if he was part of the skit it might be why...
Else I don't know, just a weird little random skit haha.

Nah, no Flynn. Just randomly triggered.

Also I laughed at the replica enemies on that island near Zaphias.

I am maining patty and she is fantastic with the magic.

It is fun to see patty get tidal wave while rita hammers with meteor storm and estelle chime in with holy rain. The enemies dont stand a chance.

Ah ok, then just random yeah!
Also yeah lmao, there's 2 more of those type of enemies. ;) One's in Niffel Lake at night and the other is South Sulion's island at night but to land there I think you need Krone's dew. Just check the "Field" tab in the map menu to find those places.

I'm playing with 3 people our mains have been patty rita and raven.

It's so fun when patty gets tempest and pulls every enemy in while Rita gets off bloody hallow (I think that is a name) which is an aoe attack around the size of the center of tempest and raven rains down arrows from the sky lol.

from what I have seen he doesn't have a ton of magic, but he has some fun skills, arrows that shoot into the air and come down on enemies later, land mines that you can stand behind as a spell caster, and a fairly solid healing ability that after enough uses quickly heals the party with multiple arrows.

I haven't paid a ton of attention to him since Patty is decently complicated to play and most of the time I'm just focused on what I am doing lol.

Raven's got about 8 magic spells, including tempest and the extremely good Stop Flow, those are the two you'd want. For Tempest you need to use Havoc Gale with "Hell Fire" and "Crucible" equipped. For Stop Flow you need Vanji Lost which is acquired in some event and then you need "Hell Fire" "Athenor" "Gale""Great Deluge" . It cost 100 TP to use but that can be cut in half with a faerie ring...and cut down to 1 TP with risky ring. Though Stop Flow got nerfed on PS3/Definitive Edition.

Is there, like, a tier list for how powerful/useful Artes and spells are? Which should be focused on to increase their power? Or which should be enabled/disabled/mapped?

Nearing the end of Act 2 now, and kind of overwhelmed by the amount of options, and the tool tips are completely unhelpful.

For spell it's simple, at the most basic it's like "Novice > Intermediate > Advanced" you'll usually wanna turn off the Novice and Intermediate spell once Rita learn a bunch of Advanced ones. It doesn't get that much more complicated once you dabble into Altered Artes. For example, once you learn stalagmite you don't really need stone blast anymore...and once you learn ground dasher well you don't need stalagmite anymore. Same with champagne > splash > tidal wave.

For attack artes it's definitely more complicated considering they can all be good, it's a matter of what you wanna use. If you stick to Yuri he gets insane skills that let's you use 2 base artes, 2 arcane artes, 2 altered artes in a single combo. There's also those "super chains" skills that lets you break the usual 3 hit combo > base > arcane artes gameplay style by letting you link arcane artes to base artes, altered artes to base arte, etc.

So I guess for the 1st time ever in my play through I ran into a crash, it was literally right after a extra character thing about the sorcerers ring with Judith. This is actually the worse because there are some long cutscenes(that I can skip) but theres also a annoying boss fight in the middle of it and no save spots

I'm not sure I quite understand the bolded part, anyway is it where you upgraded the sorcerer ring to level 2 right after Judith joined your party?

Those extra character dialogue things when yourbjust walking sroind but yes
Oh the skits! Anyway, after Judith joins go back to the room where they were both locked, there's a heal save point there. It's easy to miss.

Justin It's worth it personally, there's a demo though you could try that and make your decision from there.

Very early on, but I'm having a little difficulty grasping combat. This is my first Tales Of game, so keep that in mind, and by very early on, I mean VERY early on. I just fought Zagi in Flynn's room.

How do I keep getting stun locked, and what can be done about it? The controls don't exactly feel responsive, and coming out of getting stunned due to a combo, even if I hold block, I still tend to get smacked a good number of times, and even if I hold the shoulder button to try to run out of the way, Yuri just isn't fast enough. Also, why do I need to hold shoulder to run in a 3d space? Why are jumping and blocking the same button, and how do I figure out how to do which one I want? Seems silly since there are several unused buttons it could be assigned to. Sometimes when I hit A, I do a cool magic attack, and other times, I do nothing. But my mana bar is full either way. What?

Not trying to complain, just an old fart who has no idea what the fuck is going on, and feel like the tutorials explain it all very poorly.

Thanks so much, now I dont have to fear activating any skits at this point in the story

To beat Zagi you need to make good use of your ability to block and be willing to use the apple gels you have if you need to.

The Artes on the A Button will differ depending on the direction the left stick is pushed in, right now you only have the one attack that will trigger when the stick is in neutral.

As to the 3D movement, that's just how the games were designed as they were evolutions of 2D side scrolling games. I'm sure a real fan can explain it better.

The combat early on is pretty rough because you literally have nothing, no skills, barely any artes (the cool magic attack with A) and so on. It won't take long before it start feeling better, especially as more people will join your party.

The basic combat for Vesperia goes as follow you can do 3 normal attacks and then follow it with an Arte (in that case with Yuri azure edge because its all you have). Even more simplified it would be B, B, B then A that's a basic combo in the game. As you level up you will learn new Artes and will be able to assign them to different directionals input, giving you a wider array of move to use. The reason why you do nothing at time is because you can't simply mash A and spam Azure Edge there's a small delay between each use of the move because they don't "link" together. As for why you need to hold the shoulder button to run in a 3D space it's just the way it is, the predecessor to Vesperia, Tales of the Abyss, introduced that concept, Vesperia just modified it a bit but still made use of it. (Although Vesperia "nerfed" it). Remember that it's still a game from 2008-2009 so it feels a bit clunky at first.

Soon, once you can explore the overworld and have to go to a place called Deidon Hold, you'll also learn that weapons you purchase will have skills attached to them, these skills will make the combat feel better in the long run, I'd explains Skills to you but the game has a voiced tutorial about them so you won't be confused. Hopefully I managed to help you a bit, if you have any other questions don't be shy.

Very helpful. I figured it would feel better eventually, I was just surprised at how handily I seemed to be getting slapped around by Zagi, especially after the guards in the prison were all such chumps. I would get nicked by one or two hits of his upward diagonal slash while recovering from getting knocked to the ground, and was just like "what the hell am I doing wrong?" because getting juggled like that and not knowing why ALWAYS feels bad at first.

All in all, I'm looking forward to really digging in more. Been a while since I played a JRPG that wasn't Dragon Quest, and I have a nice long road trip coming up to enjoy it on.

Zagi in Zaphias Castle is always annoying, he's faster than the delay that occur between a combo and being able to block. Also I'm warning you ahead of time, without giving away when or what it is you will come across a difficulty spike boss at one point you'll know when, at that specific fight don't give up thinking the game might be too hard he's like the only spike of the entire game, if it gets too hard feel free to ask for advice on here.

Beside that, enjoy! It's an excellent game.

Had my first crash after 8 hours. Fighting some monsters in the magistrate's basement after meeting Raven. I only lost like 3 minutes of actual gameplay, since the rest was just skippable cutscenes, so not a big deal, I guess.

I blame Karol. He wasn't actually in my party, I'm just blaming him.

they nerfed Stop flow for raven :( no real reason to use him then.
He's still worth using but yeah, can't spam that stop flow as much now!

Did they wait 10 years and 2 re-relases to nerf the spell or was it a bug of this version?
They nerfed it on PS3. Basically, on 360, you could spam stop flow without any drawback. In the PS3 version Raven gets tired after 3 uses so he need to rest a bit, it's a small nerf but yeah.

Also, a bit of a advanced technique to help with long recovery after you moves. When doing any combo, Hold Free Run button+forward+block. Yuri will cancel into free run, then immediately into block, sliding a little forward. This is really good for making your moves safe.

I can't believe this game is a mid/late 2000s 360 game, the graphics have aged fantastic. It could release now as a new game with only slight tweaks in the graphics and would still look acceptable as a modern game.

I'm really glad I'm getting to experience this, it's really awesome. I've played Syphonia, Phantasia (GBA) and Abyss (3DS), but this one feels so much better than those games. Having a protagonist that isn't a naive moron goes a long way. I like that he picks up on certain foreshadowed plot points right around the same time the player does. The party members in this game are great, too. Rita's interactions with others is hilarious. Even Estelle's naivitity comes across as genuine and not just because she's an idiot child or whatever half the characters in ToS' excuse was. And also Karol is in the game, I guess.
