Dang, looks like some places got hit hard. UNLV campus and the surrounding area just got a light dusting, and now it's just raining. I wished it snowed enough to cancel classes, but oh well.

I live on the outskirts of Summerlin and when I walked outside this morning, I legit thought I had somehow ended up in the Midwest.

Meanwhile, in the UK temperatures are way above normal for this time of year. We should be around 10 to 11C but instead some parts are hitting 18C. It's still winter and yet temps are around late spring.

Ireland is also experiencing its second warmest winter is recent years. Only 2012 was slightly warmer. This time last year it was snowing.

Yeah, had a coworker tell me he got something like 4 inches near his house, and he saw that the Summerlin area apparently got even more than that.

Meanwhile, where I live in AZ we've got about a foot and a half of snow. This cold front is some crazy stuff.

This gets pretty dangerous on the roads because no one has winter tires for snow, right?
Correct. I've been watching the 511 pages for Nevada and Arizona (my mother is trying to get back home from an Arizona trip) and there's been so many reports of people sliding off the highways today.
Winter tires or no, I think it's more that most people don't know how to drive on snowy roads. If you go out there and drive the speed limit or higher, stomping on the gas/brakes, you're going to have a bad time.

Sub 30 is the BEST time for the hot tub though.
Right? lol the colder the better usually. But, I think I killed the warmth because I was in it before the white started hitting. Nothing, and I mean nothing beats precipitation and 30-40 degrees in a hot tub with your booze of choice.

What's it like to go to college in Las Vegas?

Do be aware that most of the city is not affected and in fact, where I am, it's mostly all melted. Driving here is back to just knowing how to drive on wet roads (which most people still don't know how to do admittedly)

Arizona, on the other hand, seems to still be caught in a blizzard.

This is crazy. As a Vegas resident for 20 years, this has never happened. According to AP, this is the first time since people started recording weather patterns in Vegas (1937) that there's been enough snowfall in the metro area to take measurements.

Jet stream's fucked, guys. Everyone out. Let's try this again on Mars and let's not fuck it up this time.

Damn, can we request a title change? That's significantly more than half an inch. That's a legit fucking snowstorm!

I reported it to the mods. Hopefully they do it. Half an inch to eight inches. Apparently Las Vegas's snow erection is a grower not a shower.

The outer edges of town got more snow. The deeper you are in the valley, the less you got. The strip did get snow, and the hockey fan in me noticed it started right at puck drop last night.

Driving today was basically the same as any normal rain this time of year. All of the snow melted upon touching the tarmac and our temperature never went below freezing. The increase in accidents is because we suck at driving in any precipitation.

Wow, 8 inches is a lot even by Canadian standards. Stay safe and enjoy; you guys can be thankful that it's warm enough that it will melt all on its own and you won't have to shovel it :P

I'm happy for you guys, I hate snow but its beautiful when fresh. As long as you stay safe (i'm sure you all aren't used to driving with white stuff), enjoy it!!

I'm fascinated by weather so this is awesome.

Crazy. My mom used to live in summerlin.

I'm worried a bit, I'm planning on doing the drive from LA to Vegas next week on Wed, then return to LA on Saturday. Really hoping the road there will be ok by then.

No, it's not about winter tires. It's a combination of:

1. The city not having things in place to prepare and to minimize the impact of the snow and ice on roads and sidewalks.

2. The majority of people not knowing how to drive in snow.

3. Many people distracted by the spectacle since they never see it, resulting in more accidents.

When a city only sees a light dusting every once in a while, 5-8 inches is dangerous.

It's completely melted today in the metro area, and next week the expected forecast is in the 60s. You'll be fine.
