I feel exactly the same, but in terms of the Kingdoms, what you see is what you get really - there is still plenty of sections/moons that are platform focused, but the game doesn't like shift focus to platforming over exploration really
Maybe then I should stop waiting for that moment and enjoy it for what it is. It's kind of amazing to experience this different kind of magic. And for my platforming fix. I can always go back to the older series ❤️

Finished up the Luncheon Kingdom with
all 100 purple coins and 43/56 Power Moons!

Incredible Kingdom, can't wait to see what's next.

I just reached Lake Kingdom and, I swear to god, this has to be the most beautiful water-based level in the history of Mario games....I really like how they revamped the swimming controls too, they feel a lot more like in the 2d games!
I love taking control of a Cheep Cheep and jumping out of the water like a dolphin.

I'm a couple of hours in and starting to get a real good feel for controlling Mario. Sometimes when I keep retrying platform sections I see myself constantly using different jumps and fixing my own mistakes with it. Mario has so many moves and I easily find the right one for the job.

It plays like a dream.

Got to the credits and the first post world kingdom. It was fun and addictive so far but I feel like I burnt out of the game so I will stop here and play something else. I might come back much later. The only thing that I didn't enjoy that much were the boss fights, they felt like too much for whatever reason. Not too difficult, just too much. Especially the broodals.

I liked the most the
robot flower
and the
Lord of Lightning
. Generally I think the bosses that required a captured enemy to fight them were much better than the rest.

Now to jump into the other games that launched this week.

Playing this with the Pro controller changed my mind. Definitely a super great experience. The crazy movement you can do with advanced tricks is pretty wild. Still trying to get a handle on the jump, throw, ground pound + dive, bounce off hat. It's a bit weird to execute, but really gives you some great mobility.

No joke. It's the perfect game for stoners. Just explore and find moons and jump on shit and look at all the bright colors.

Good job Nintendo lol

So glad I got this and an snes classic.
I really think I am playing the greatest game of all time right now. This is amazing. Mario has started taking a nap since I'm posting on Gaf.

Definitely - as I say, I am exactly the same and prefer the platforming over the exploration, but Odyssey is a pretty awesome sweet spot for both

This game nails basically everything, but I want to give special mentions to the water levels. The possession mechanic works amazingly well for these to give you an out to just chill and explore as a fish, or in the beach level use that extremely fun water dashing enemy.

The amount of mechanics they can pull out and keep iterating on is just insane, they had a stroke of genius with it.

I wasn't really feeling the moons at first but they have grown on me. Im at 184 currently and the desire to find every last one is surprisingly strong. Nintendo did a great job making sure the mechanics of each world are varied to stave off repetitiveness.

This game is so good. So good. There are really sneaky with some of the moons. The hint system is also great at nudging you in the right direction without giving everything away.

I too just beat the main story with just over 300 moons and what a trip it's been. Easily one of the best games I've ever played.
Now to dig into the post-game!

Finally booted this up last night. Beautiful, and I'm having fun (just got the ship).

I don't think I'll ever get used to how 3D mario games control though. His period of sorta running-in-place before he gets going always feels really weird to me.

Yes, the lake kingdom is lovely. I'm surprised to see several reviewers/journalists cite is as one of the lesser kingdoms. I think the change of pace and aesthetic and music are all really good.

Started playing today, completely amazed by the density, design, OST, attention to detail. Never a dull moment, I have to force myself to stop playing because real life gets in the way. Wow, just wow

I'm gonna have to start playing with the joycons together instead of separate. Last night I got cramps in my hand but I figured it was just from playing it for about 10 hours. Today they came back after two hours.

How?

I guess not everything but you can re do most of the boss battles. If you haven't beat the game yet you'll find out how.

I'm glad regular coins have a point again because I probably love discovering hidden ones more than I do moons.

Beat it a couple hours ago, I´m not going to go into detail to not spoil anyone, just going to say that I´m one of the biggest Nintendo and Mario fanboys and I had huge expectations for this game, yet it somehow managed to surpass all of them and surprise me in ways I couldn´t even imagine. At times I felt like I was playing Galaxy, other times it was Mario 64, sometimes I would get huge Zelda vibes and it shares a lot of stuff with BotW. In fact, I think SMO is what BotW would have been if the devs had been given absolute creative freedom and they didn´t have to stick to a semi-realistic setting.

The most common complaint in the reviews was tha it was easy, well I don´t think it´s easier than any other Mario game. And I do feel that, like all Mario games, you´ll get your ass handed to you once you start to go after the most difficult starts. Oh and I just startted the postgame but
there is an immediate and very evident rise in difficulty in the very fist Kingdom
. I don´t know why the reviewers gave this false feeling that it was too easy, it feels like any other 3D Mario; easy to beat, hard to complete.

Holy shit.

I cannot believe how awesome that final Bowser fight was. Just utter awesomeness. And Peach turning down both the suitors is conclusively my favorite ending of any Mario game.

Also, LOL @ The song at the end. I felt like I suddenly got dropped into a Sonic the Hedgehog game.

It's really easy to just get lost in this game collecting stuff. I have 97 moons right now and I don't want to stop. Learning how to best control Mario to maximize your jumping height and distance is lots of fun.

How?

Yes, I am also getting cramps when I almost never do when playing games. Even with the joy cons docked. I think its a bit awkward, and am thinking of buying a pro controller as well. I just feel like the best experience should be separate joy cons but my hands are too big I guess

I've seen so many people complain about odyssey being short.

Listen, if Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine didn't send you back to the start of the level and reset all your coins after every star/shine, and didn't have 10-15 long victory sequences and level reloads per star/shine, they would be significantly shorter games. They're both Much, much smaller than odyssey.

Is anyone else having problems with the throwing cappy upwards motion? Can't seem to do it at all most of the time.

Question about a main story moon quest in the Metro Kingdom:
is there a way to replay the 2d Mario/DK sequence?

Ugh. Asking the parrot feels like cheating at times but I am not really good at sniffing out the hard to find moons. :(

HD Rumble works so great in this game. Nephew was playing on New Donk City with the scooter. He was holding the Joycons split like he was holding the scooter's handles, having a blast. Game is pure fun.

Yeah, Odyssey is not a short game. It takes you at least 8-10 hours to complete the story...so this means 1-2 missions in one of the kingdoms.
If you know Mario games and you've played them before you know that the real game starts after the credits. I'm pretty sure it's going to take me 70+ hours to see and finish every challenge in this game.

I think the hub world helps make Mario 64 feel a lot bigger than it was. But there's no denying that game had a pretty extensive list of worlds. The scale at the time was mind blowing.

Now that you mention it, I can't really do it either lol. It seems to work for me if I first throw it, hold Y and when it returns, flick the joy cons up and release. But even then it's kinda tricky.

EDIT got it to work. So make sure the joy cons are flat, then raise them up without tilting he control in any direction. Like lifting a book motion.

I'm on my third day of playing and I'm still seeing new shit, by the third day, I had 100%ed Galaxy 1 and 2/Land/World.
64 and Sunshone don't even come close to having this much content.

Well yeah, it took me like a week or two just to beat king bomb omb. I kept on throwing him off the side of the mountain. I think it took me 2 or 3 years to get all 120 stars. I have no idea how much time I spent just dicking around while making no progress, but it was dozens of hours.

Comes with the territory of breaking new ground that Mario 64 did (and my being a kid)

So even though this came yesterday, I haven't had a chance to mess with it at all.

I do have a question though. Are there multiple save files? I know my fiance is going to want to play, but the co-op doesn't seem right for us and swapping off getting moons doesn't really seem to great either.

Just got to what feels like the endgame at
the Moon Kingdom
but also I added it up and the total number of possible Moons in all worlds so far is like
500
when I know the game has
over 800
. Just how much more is there?
