Turns out I read that on PC World Australia, hence the much higher price.
For $499, it's well worth it. Now if only they'd drop the price of that wireless charging stand since the ones I had for the Samsung don't work with it...
I feel that way with my S8+. It's fine for me. I'm gonna ride it out another year, and then I'll see how my battery is holding up.
I'm in no rush for a new phone. This does all I need.

Good Lock has been the greatest thing Samsung has done since Marshmallow. All three versions of it were the best things they've done for their respective Android versions.
At this point, I think it's just a testing ground for Samsung to offload all of their customization to, or at least the heaviest stuff. Then no one will have to wait for Android 10, 11, and so on. They could push it there and move on.
Guys, whats a sleek looking stock market app, like the one on iOS? All the ones I could find look straight out of the 90s or require an account.

Slightly unusual question but what's the "best" of the ultra-low cost Android phones? I'm talking something in the $30-60 range. Looking for something that can basically function as a mobile messenger (using WhatsApp or other something similar) - no real interest in using the cell service. Solid performance would be preferable - no real care on the side of camera/storage/screen quality (obviously, at that price range).
Probably some prepaid carrier-locked device like the Verizon Moto E4.

doesn't help that w/e his apps he install always seem to cause all kinds of lags and issues with pixel lol.

I don't think anyone can run a proper modern Android install on 4GB of RAM without having issues, tbh.

You don't know this. We saw an early alpha build via xda. Everything won't be known until I/O. Either way some of the leaked improvements are fantastic. Don't know why you would not see the new permission system as not being a bid deal.

Yeah I have to admit its crazy how far ahead many of the better OEMs have sprinted beyond Stock at this point. They were ALWAYS ahead. But it seems Google really let a gap open while they worked on that camera tech. Its amazing tech and gives them the best camera, but Im enjoying the hell out of my OnePlus 6, and its still stupid fast, much faster than even stock Android, and my updates are like.... 3 - 6 weeks or faster.
Reallllllly eroding the reason to buy a Pixel. Although I suppose variety is a good thing.
Not sure if it will amount to anything, but Google is seemingly laying off/transferring employees out of its laptop/tablet division. It might indicate they're abandoning that section of hardware?

As I said in the thread for that hardware, I've used Android since the original HTC Hero so I'm very well versed in how Google operates. It's okay to be wary about Google's long term support of hardware given how quickly they pull the plug on things.
It looks like it might be, since Android Police is showing an image of the Pixel XL in the eligible devices for the Android Q beta. I can't see why they would include it in the beta if they weren't planning on releasing it for the original Pixels.
My Pixel is eligible! I had a good feeling that they would give another year for the sake of being called Pixel lol No reason to change device for another year (I probably wouldn't either way)
I will install it tomorrow afternoon because in the morning I need the phone working and I am extra unlucky when it comes to stuff not working when I most need lol Last year the first version of Android P Beta was quite great already, very minor bugs and performance almost perfect since the first version, but better safe than sorry.

Yeah, this is great news for those of us with original Pixels. I was considering upgrading to a Pixel 4 XL later this year, but I really don't see much point in doing so now. My phone still runs smooth and I haven't had any actual issues with it.
Had the note 7 not been recalled it would have stuck on Oreo while the Pixel 1 now has Q.
People always argue hardware value but this gives Google some serious credibility in the support department.
Why is it that apps on Android send so many quasi-ad notifications but the same apps on iOS limit their notifications to important information? If someone responds to my request for a quote on Yelp, that's something I should be notified of outside the app; I shouldn't get a notification to provide feedback on my experience with Yelp's services when I'm not using it.
Haven't noticed that myself, or if an app is getting aggressive with notifications there tends to be options to customize the notifications to your liking, at least on stuff I use like Google Maps.
Honestly with iOS which I've been mainly using since last November I find that I get too few notifications. The Amazon app especially has been bad at notifying of when packages get delivered.
Man, watching some Q beta videos... Samsung One UI visually looks so far ahead of Google's Android. Also like how Google finally realized they were doing permissions in the stupidest possible way and just straight up copied Apple, lmao.

It's about time Google start to support its phones for 3 years... 2 years is pathetic when Apple supports their iPhones/iPads for 5+ years (maybe even more?).
We always hear that Google is working to make it easier for other brands to update quicker, and the reality is here: same day Note users get the update to Pie, Pixel users get update to Q (beta, but still). A phone that launched in August, P launched in October, update coming in March. And it is a flagship! Joke.
The Pixel is the first phone Google has developed. The Nexus devices required OEM cooperation for updates.
Yes Samsung is a joke for updating so late but that's not Google's fault.
But at the same time, what features are being brought to the table that Samsung didn't already have? The reworked permissions look to be the only thing that OEMs are actually missing out on while it's Google who's actually playing catch up.
No one's really going to care if nothing new is really being brought to the table; I know I don't. I have a Samsung phone, I'm on Samsung's timeline, not Google's. As long as they continue to push out updates in March/April, I'm not going to care much.
You don't even know what Q is all about and you are already assuming it has nothing you will care about. We are on beta 1 out of seven and usually user facing improvements don't come till IO or later.
Android is always improving at the low level and the Samsung excuse making of it's skin already has all the same features is just not true and is getting old. Every year Google brings out new APIs for developers to use. How do you expect them to support them in a timely manner when the biggest OEM takes forever to roll them out?
Samsung litterally stops upgrading their flagships two Android versions before Google does and that's just inexcusable. Preach Samsung's updates all you want but that doesn't change the fact that you get less of them than the competition.

Samsung isn't preventing developers from using new APIs, there's still a metric shit ton of devices on Lollipop and Marshmallow that probably have a much larger impact.
Besides, maybe if the biggest OEMs are doing something, they should just implement it that way instead of redoing it and then making everyone else go backward and regress to implement it.
Samsung's lack of long term support does suck, yes, but that's an issue independent of everything else. Multiple updates isn't a concern to me, either. Samsung updates its modules through its store and pushes out security updates like everyone else, so I don't personally see it as such a big issues since i'm not really lacking in features. And if I am, not many. My feeling would be the same if I had a Huawei or Xiaomi phone, too. I don't see it as a big issue with any OEM that skins Android.
