Why does our culture care far more about charisma than experience? So many people just don't seem to understand the presidency and what it does. I understand experience doesn't mean too much, but you wouldn't put in place a person who doesn't understand how to manage a company, so why would anyone do the same for the government? It just feels like some people just want a president that says the 'right' things without doing anything. I guess people have different priorities.
Experience in Washington naturally raises suspicion/distrust among a lot of people. Plus, a lot of voters simply have no clue about particular policies, the nuances of one position vs. the other, etc. Charisma is so much easier and more visceral to 'get' than anything else. And it makes it easier for voters to project on to the candidate too.

Betos being talked a lot because he's traveling and going places

Get that the others have a job right now but they need to pound pavement. Going to different events or whatever gets you in the news even if it's not national you'll get in all over the local news

I refuse to believe Hickenlooper was mentioned by anyone that many times. More than Buttigeig?! I simply refuse!

First week v.s. first week. Pete didn't get a ton of coverage out of the gate but was doing the podcast circuit, etc promoting his book which led to the Beltway media wanting to have him on.

We live in a political junkie bubble where we actually pay attention to Mayor Pete. He gets little to no attention in the mainstream media side of things.
Sure but we're talking about cable news networks, not Iowa caucus goers. Is this thread really more of a bubble than CNN's 2020 coverage?

This makes sense!

It's also because the power of the president is becoming increasingly limited. Ultimately what matters is getting the right Party in office, getting a great cabinet in place, selecting Supreme Court Justices who are not only NOT rapists but also have good judgment, and ensuring turnout for the down ticket races in order to shape Congress as much as possible.

Trump in the Rose Garden with Bolsonaro: "I'm very proud to hear the president use the term 'fake news.'"

Bolsonaro has repeatedly criticized the media as "fake news" and has emulated Trump in other ways, including communicating with voters largely via Twitter.

That WP article doesn't even have that much in it, most of it is about convos around inauguration time. The recent "rant" I dunno, maybe as fodder to try and get media to make them more of a story to help out KAC's eventual book.

Nobody ever talks about Kellyanne any more outside of this marital drama, I wouldn't be surprised if they intentionally do this shit for that reason.

I think making that argument requires you to view Donald Trump as a traditional Republican president who by dint of decreasing executive authority has failed to enact Republican policies in the two years his party held control, instead of an insurgent populist who has repeatedly bucked legal norms and acted as an obstacle to traditional Republican party positions as much as he has been pushing for openly nationalist, isolationist, and racist ideas Republican politicians generally used to shy away from.

In fact, I think it's a testament to the increasing power of the Presidency, both legally and in the media landscape, that Donald Trump has been able to so quickly draw even moderate Republicanism into the MAGA cult and normalize open white identity politics in the Republican ideological sphere.

G. Elliott Morris@gelliottmorris

Data: .@BetoORourke has received more total media coverage than all 2020 candidates except Warren, Harris, Sanders & Klobuchar... in just 5 days. He has been mentioned by networks 1.3x more than Sanders was in the 1st week. On track for 180% more 1st-week coverage than any1 else.

Guessing this is just an announcement jump.

same thing with mahr/coulter. They're white. No dog in the fight. So its all fun and games. At the end of everything, they will be ok. And likely respect one another for their work.

Believe it or not, Trump's systematic destruction of rule of law in this country also affects white people. Minorities have far more reason to be concerned, yes, but that's painting with a tad too broad of a brush.

For rich white people at least, a Trump presidency really doesn't change anything on day to day basis.

When are we going to do that thing again where we all vote for our current top candidates that I thiiiink Kaitos was running? I feel like responses might have shifted now that Bernie/Beto are officially in the race and people like Buttigieg/Yang have gotten more attention.

Well, then. McConnell's court stacking works.

Fuck this
"Do you think that will be a basis for a high crime or misdemeanor for impeachment?" asked Shedd, an appointee of President George W. Bush.

This is immaterial to whether the case has merit. This is quite clearly communicating that the judge is considering the effects of the lawsuit politically.

Getting the DOJ to issue a memo to work from, I imagine. Asking them to set the ground rules before he goes at them.

I know these types of investigations and inquiries need to be done, but lord Jesus help us if Trump loses in 2020 and Republicans somehow regain the House.

Some GOP staffers won't be getting sleep for weeks trying to find any dirt on the Democrats to investigate.

Like that isn't EXACTLY what Hillary Clinton would have faced had Trump lost in the first place.

@NatashaBertrand
Breaking from @IsaacDovere: "Sirota's hiring as a senior adviser and speechwriter was announced by the Sanders campaign on Tuesday morning after The Atlantic contacted the campaign and inquired about the undisclosed role Sirota held while attacking other Democrats."
Edward-Isaac Dovere

@IsaacDovere
SCOOP @davidsirota, just hired as Bernie Sanders' speechwriter and senior adviser, has been quietly writing speeches and advising him for months without disclosing it but while bashing pretty much every candidate in the field: https://www.theatlantic.com/politic...sed-civility-hired-twitter-attack-dog/585259/
