I've watched like four videos about Necrodancer and I still don't fully get the gameplay.

It's incredibly simple when you get your hands on it. Think of it like a turn-based strategy RPG that doesn't pause between turns and where every turn is a 'beat' in the rhythm of the song that's playing. So move -> attack -> move -> use item would be 4 'beats' in the song.

It's both - you move to the rhythm otherwise you lose your multiplier. Definitely not misleading to call it a rhythm game...

I think the issue is, calling Necrodancer a rhythm game is like calling Deus Ex a first-person shooter. It's not wrong, but it's just not telling the whole story, and some people have preconceived notions about genre.

The art in the trailer looked and moved like the story book cutscenes in Hyrule Warriors though. Neat collaboration!

Wait this is a rhythm game? So it just a bunch of rhythm level? Or is it that with a connected Hyrule overworld?

It's a rhythm game with combat, collecting and exploration. Watch some gameplay from Crypt of the Necrodancer, but imagine it with Zelda music, world, items and enemies.

Good enough to make a Zelda collaboration with ;)

It's a roguelike with rhythm mechanics.

The distinction is that in a rhythm game you can't advance without getting the beat. In Crypt you can definitely advance while totally ignoring the rhythm mechanics but you won't get the awesome bonuses that come with it.

If you love roguelikes (procedurally generated maps, a ton of powerups to figure out, etc) you are going to have a blast with this and the original necrodancer.

I was totally awful at Crypt of the Necrodancer but damn is it a game that just feels amazing to play. The upgraded graphics and Zelda content in this make it a Day One buy for sure. Can't wait!

Wow, this is crazy! Necrodancer is one of the best indies ever so they chose the right people to partner with.

Hyrule Warriors?
Smash?
Technically Spirit Tracks?

The fact that people are throwing a musou and an all-star fighting game at me is kind of my overriding point.

Nintendo's track record with its oldest heroines needs to improve. Cadence is an awesome step toward that, but again, it's telling that it's coming from an indie.

Crypt of the Necromancer is so damn good, and the soundtrack is amazing.

This is a match made in heaven.

You all know exactly what I'm talking about. There is one game in the official Zelda playlist where Zelda is playble and even then it comes with a huge number of caveats until literally the final boss. The fact that it is only third party spin-offs that allow a fully playable Zelda is absolutely a bummer.
It's clear that you're just moving goalposts at this point, though. I think that instead of trying to get a jab in at Nintendo (especially in this thread), we should be happy about this kind of collaboration.

This is such a good idea.

Beyond hyped for this, let alone Danny B remixing classic Zelda tracks.

This is amazing haha

When watching the trailer, when the first Zelda music quote hit I was like, "ah neat, a reference"

And then it kept going and going and I was like, "no fuckin way"

And then the logo hit

I would say it is misleading to just call it a rhythm game yeah. Rhythm roguelite might be a better description. If you just tell me something is a rhythm game I'm going to imagine games like Rhythm Heaven, those Hatsune Miku games, etc. where you just follow along pushing the buttons the game tells you to push. This game is way different because not only do you have full freedom to roam around and act how you please in roguelite levels instead of following explicit instructions, but the staying on beat part is extremely, extremely lenient. The challenge of the game comes from quickly working out how to position yourself to attack enemies while being safe given their movement patterns.

God I love crazy Nintendo this generation! I love their approach to quality, their (successful) efforts to make the Switch the perfect indie home and going all out with ideas like this.

It's also a smart move to not let this be published straight up as a "Zelda" game but rather going the safer route through the "Hyrule" tag. Not sure if this is for me, but I definitely LOVE the idea.

This kind of partnership is awesome to see. I hope Nintendo continues to allow 3rd parties and now indies to leverage their IP.

Original game didn't make it for me, but this has Zelda in the title, so I'll have to try it.

Ahhh love this announcement
25 remixed Zelda themes with gameplay centered around music <3

I'd appreciate it if people would stop tearing down the Link's Awakening remake though :(

I just don't get how in indie game is somehow more meaningful then two official spin-offs?

Like why is it more special that Zelda is playable here?(and again Spirit Tracks.)

Somewhere.
Holy crap, this looks so cool! Not into roguelike that much through, so don't know if I will check it out, but can't wait to hear the music either way. <3
