For as great as the game is, they didn't do a lot to the remaster to improve on some of those old quirks. It still is very much an older game from that era. 2&3 got better but still had some similar issues.

Blighttown is just trash honestly. Regardless of where/when you played the game.

Personally I still prefer 2 over 1 and I know I am in the minority there. I did like 3 best overall though.

I think Demon Souls is the best of the bunch, even after Bloodbourne, but I 100% agree that Dark Souls 2 ended up being the better game vs. DS1. The first game has more coherent lore, the second game more coherent gameplay. There are some silly hidden mechanics in the second game (related to dodging), but once you know about it the game really opens up. And the DLC for that game is far away the best content in the entire series, save maybe for the Ringed City in 3.

But it isnt an x-com class game so it doesn't fit.

Mutant year Zero is coming and better fits the posters requirements.

I love ItB as much as anyone, but it is not a panacea for wanting TBS when in fact it is more puzzle/rogue/tbs and even more like FTL than it is Xcom.

I honesty hate seeing people recommend it in the same vein as a Fire Emblem or X-Com because it scratches a different itch.

Like if you want well built maps, story and complex enemy ai, do not go into the breach expecting that. You will get a challeng though and it is varied. It is also procgen. Expect well thought out logic puzzles based around load outs and skills that will challenge and reward you like no other. ItB is that kind of game where you can stare at a map for hours trying to puzzle out a solution and not get it and have to come back when you have that eureka moment eating breakfast. I love it but it is just a different animal.

Xcom and others like it are about mastering the actual tactics and movement of a set map with specific enemies. Tactical thinking in a different direction.

Into the Breach should still be recommended to anyone looking for a strategy game, so long as people know what they're getting into. It's one of the best games ever made and while it is indeed different than many turn based strategy titles, it's also better than most of them.

I've heard great things about Mutant Year Zero though. Hopefully the Switch port is decent.

Right but not an XCom like is what I am saying. Or a SRPG either. like if someone wants that specific sub genre ItB won't scratch those itches.

Which means you can't just blanket rec it without them understanding the differences like you said.

This is easier said than done. You can't register the same card with multiple PP addresses, which means you have to have a spare card. And Revolut doesn't seem to work because the billing address won't be in the US.
It took me less than 3 minutes to create and link a separate Paypal in 2017 for overseas sales. But yea, you'd have to unlink your European CC from your normal Paypal (temporarily), but then again I also have my bank account linked to it for funds in case I need to use my normal Paypal account (not a lot these days, usually just CC).

Beats having to juggle with Mexican eShop cards through different sources though, let alone the worse conversion rates and inflexible amounts to put on a seperate account.

I'm in such a mood for this kind of game. Anybody else trying it for the first time? It looks like a ton of fun
I will be. Have a long flight coming up in May so was deciding between this and Dark SOuls remastered since I haven't played DS past the first boss before, but the announcement of Travis coming to this (even if he's just a random dude in it) and the way people talk about it has me pretty solidly picking it up.

I'll also try Dragon's Dogma for the first time. I only played the demo on the X360, but the combat system looked super fun.

I see some of you guys are attracted to Dark Souls but don't really like it. Well, you should consider Dragon's Dogma. I'm not saying it's like Dark Souls, but it's also a 3D adventure game with lots of fights against cool creatures, only a lot more arcadey than Dark Souls. The gameplay loop is very different, of course, and I assume DD is way less frustrating.

Yeah, unfortunately that wouldn't work for me - I have a lot of things paid regularly through PayPal, e.g. Netflix, Game Pass. Etc. Unlinking my card every time I want to buy a game would wreak havoc!

Thanks! Any chance of some open world footage? What do you think of the port (especially undocked) so far?

Port feels solid. Let me check my embargo restrictions for footage. If allowed, I'll show some of the open area.

Fuck, I can't wait for this to release!!!! It look so good too. Assuming that you played more, how does the frame rate hold up? What about the pop-in?

Pop-in is noticeable. You'll see bushes & such randomly appear. Haven't encountered any noticeable frame rate issues.

I already have Dark Arisen on PS4 and I played a couple of hours and then stopped, the appeal of handheld mode is there but I really should not spend the extra money.

Okay, I think I'm finally getting over my Fortnite addiction, as I am now starting to look for something else to play. Not sure if I want to revisit my existing games or tackle something new.

So in that vein, what turn-based squad tactics games ado y'all recommend? I'm looking for an X-Com-shaped title for my library. I've already played Steamworld Heist, but hesitant on Mario+Rabbids because it's a bit more frivolous than what I'm currently after. I'm considering Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics, though Steam reviews are lukewarm. Any other ideas?

Also, how is Everspace for the Switch? Any problems or raves?
Hard West is the obvious choice if you want actual XCOM-likes and Into the Breach isn't your cup of tea (it should be, though). How you looked at that Cthulhu Tactics game before this actually good one is crazy to me :)

Btw Dragon's Dogma's boss battles in particular have elements similar to Monster Hunter, such as climbing up bosses, damaging individual parts, etc, but it's much more comparable to Devil May Cry (same director and team!). Each class and weapon type offers a rich, distinct moveset and it's such a joy to experiment with all the options. Also no, it's not really that hard, let alone like Dark Souls, and the variety in gameplay and clever ways you can handle enemies makes it quite accessible.

Oh and many people will describe it as having an open world, but it does not have one. DD has some expansive maps, but different areas are divided in smaller chunks, like maps in Ocarina of Time, to give an example. It is very open ended in the sense that it let's you do and focus on whatever you want at your own pace tho; the freedom is awesome.
Some undocked Dragon's Dogma footage.

Bless you, I've been waiting for this. Seems to run pretty well, so I'm definitely double dipping; I had a blast with it on PS4 but never finished it.

It's not as hard as Dark Souls (and it plays nothing like it) but you probably won't like DD that much if you're not interested in the combat. The variety and depth it has when it comes to fighting is like 70% of its appeal.

I've played a couple hours of MYZ on Xbox One (OG) and it's really good but it's way more Commandos than it is Xcom. About a Switch port, the game is beautiful and as great aesthetics but it also runs consistently at 25fps on Xbone and that was during the first parts of the game, I imagine it might get even lower when things get hectic; they'll need to cut a lot of its visual flair (mainly its beautiful lighting and lush vegetation) to make it work on Switch.

Wasn't thinking about getting Dragon's Dogma but being able to get Travis Touchdown as a pawn is a huge selling point for me

Dragon's Dogma is like bizarro Skyrim: great combat, poor open world.

I didn't like it all that much when I played on PC, but I might give it another try on the Switch.

Mainly just so I don't have to give out my card details to anyone who wants it. :P
We're kind of getting off-topic here, but.. :) Aren't you insured with your CC company for that kind of thing though? I mean Netflix, Game Pass and that kind of thing seem to be reputable companies. I do understand the extra ease of mind though with regards to security.

For anyone playing Trials, the stadium challenges have been changed for easier qualifications. And I just got myself a complete bunny suit after opening 2 Easter crates.

Has there been any word about the Starlink update for April? I haven't seen anything.
There was an official post on the website earlier this month about the content, but no specific date.

Pilots of the Starlink Initiative,

Thank you so much for the warm response to the new Starlink content announced during the February Nintendo Direct.

With the announcement of new content arriving this April, we felt that it is important to provide an update on the topic of physical toys. Starlink: Battle for Atlas has been a passion project for us from the start, and we are incredibly proud of the modular Starship technology we have developed, and how well players have responded to it.

Despite the immense and continuous support from our players, the sales for Starlink: Battle for Atlas fell below expectations. Consequently, we recently made the decision to not release any additional physical toys for the Spring update and in the future.

As part of our effort to do right by our passionate and dedicated community we are currently hard at work on our biggest update to the game so far and are pleased to tell all of you that there will be new digital ships, pilots and weapons to collect.

Additionally, there will be a ton of free content to expand your games such as additional missions, challenges and new activities to engage in throughout Atlas, including content that was inspired by community suggestions, such as Outlaw Racing.

We're very grateful for the support we have received from players around the world and can't wait for everyone to get their hands on our next big update launching this April.

We'll see you in the stars,

Starlink Development Team

Speaking of cool indies coming out this thursday, I just learned of Hell is Other Demons. This looks pretty sweet

I'm already double dipping on Cuphead and pre-ordered Katana Zero, so I'll pass for now, but I'm curious about it.

Also I must have missed the announcement, but the Coming Soon section shows Vallhalla is apparently coming out May 2nd. Nice.

( Double posting from the glorious shmup thread... )

There is a new Japanese shmup release for Switch and Xbox One that seems to have been completely ignored in STG communities.

Its name is 'Alien Cruise', and it's one of the weirdest shmups ever made.

The game is a love letter to the 'Gradius' and 'Parodius' series, being a horizontal shmup in which the obstacles in the scenario are a significant part of the level design, following a tradition of memorization shmups from the mid 80s and early 90s.

It remembers me A LOT to 'Cambria Sword' in its WILD spirit: it's a flawed game, far from being a classic, with some disappointing things like the sound design (probably, the worst sound design that I have ever found in a Japanese shmup).

But oh man, like 'Cambria Sword', this game is one of the most insane accumulations of crazy and weird ideas, with every segment of the game blowing your head with its level of madness.

A showcase of fucking gigantic enemies after fucking gigantic enemies, with a level of surrealness on par with 'PuLiRuLa'. And tons of homages to Konami classics like the volcanoes from 'Darius', and constant changes in the gameplay mechanics with every crazy idea from a brain consumed by psychedelic drugs thrown into the mix.

009.jpg

With a distinctive comic look, making of this one of the most creative artistic designs that I have found in a shooting game.

It really remembers me to some of the most obscure titles released for the PC Engine, with echoes of 'Cho Aniki', 'Hana Taaka Daka!?', 'L-Dis', 'God Panic'... YEAH, that level of madness.

The weapon system sucks, with TOO many weapons, every one intended to play a different segment... I think that a system with less weapons, but upgrading these through the accumulation of power-ups, should have worked much better.

And because the sub-par sound design, the feeling of destroying things which is a seminal part of the shmup experience, it's not very accomplished.

But the game is so damn creative and weird, and so varied and surprising with each level feeling completely different in a 'Genetos' way, that at the end of the day you will forgive its flaws, playing this with a smile of pure happiness on your face.

And it's one of the rare contemporary shumps with a two players local co-op mode.

Because of this post, I decided to purchase this game. You're right in that it's definitely weird, lol, but that's why I like it. More specifically, I appreciate the visuals. Best part of the game IMO.

The sound isn't amazing. I don't feel any feedback when killing enemies, especially bosses. Falls flat.

I've gone through 4 worlds so far, I think? It isn't a difficult game. I plan on finishing it to see what else is there.

Speaking of shmups, I might pick up that Darius collection that came out not too long ago. One of my local import stores received some copies of the regular edition today.

That's helpful, thank you. I had pieced a bit of that together from watching some expert runs on YouTube but you helped fill in some blanks. I didn't know that certain environmental objects can be interacted with through the bomb -- that is so cool. I really like a game I can sink my teeth into and feel like there's a lot to discover, so this game is right up my alley. It feels like a game made by someone who really understands shmups while also wanting to push and pull the genre in weird ways. If you like this game, you should check out Millionaire Onion Hotel on mobile. It's the same dev and has a lot of the same mystique and charm.

FIGURED IT OUT. Or one thing at least.

After watching some Youtube videos and looking for environmental reactions are the product of pure freaking luck. I think the triggers are always in the same place, but basically if you have to shoot precisely the right part of the ground to activate the asparagus rockets. This makes the downward bullets make a little more sense than they already did. And the same is true of the powerup pots. You have to shoot the right parts of the ground or the trees/ceilings in order to get them to pop out. They are otherwise invisible. So it's a matter of memorizing landscapes and reactions. I tested True Mode against a video I just watched and, sure enough, the powerup pots and asparagus rockets all appeared in the same place.

Still no idea what triggers those trains. Sometimes I get one, sometimes two... I'm guessing there's a trigger I'm missing somewhere. Something to do with the railroad signs? But I didn't see anything conclusive in any of the runs I watched.

I read in a comment somewhere that the train spawning is timed to a music cue -- or I guess that's the same way of saying it's based on the time you've spent in the level. The same goes for the circle of enemies that shows up during certain points in the song. At least I think they're just based on time.

Is there any reason to play on normal mode after unlocking True? True just seems more interesting overall.
