It's actually really interesting, because I feel like the more time you invest into these, the more flawed they become.
At first I was fine with the new catching mechanic, but as Pokemon started to actually dodge things and the motion controls not always registering what I just did, I got more and more burnt out and stopped catching new Pokemon. Trainer battles alone don't give as much exp anymore, so I was severely underleveled for most of the game. Once I reached the actual postgame and started shiny chaining, which I did in handheld mode, because for whatever reason you can only use a control stick to aim in handheld mode, the flaws became more pronounced. Actually catching Pokemon takes more time than in the other mainline games, because of the elimination of Quick and Dusk Balls. The Master trainers are simply not fun, only grindy. It takes forever to catch a legendary, because they break out of 20 ultra balls despite using berries and you have no way of enhancing your catch rate beyond that so you are simply stuck throwing ball after ball.
On the other hand things like having access to the box from anywhere, which does not heal contrary to popular belief, and overworld Pokemon are great additions.
In the end I am a core Pokemon player that has a full living dex and plays each game for hundreds of hours together with my fiancé, so I understand that maybe they just wanted to create a "simpler" experience for players, but removing the options for players like me as well as not being able to use a wider varitey of Pokemon through transferring are questionable decisions, that I highly doubt would have interfered with anyone that simply wanted to play Kanto again with the new mechanics.
