I thought Yoshiyaki Koizumi was in charge of Super Mario Odyssey?
He's the producer, basically like Miyamoto used to be. Would've been credited as General Producer probably, if EPD Tokyo did normal credits. Normal "producer" producer is Hayashida. Basically 3D Mario is Koizumi's baby now so he's in a more senior position (overseeing/managing all EPD Tokyo stuff) but puts an extra focus on being involved in 3D Mario still. Again, like Miyamoto used to do for the majority of the last two decades.

I'm actually excited to see Pikmin 4 and see what direction Miyamoto takes it.

If Pikmin 4 surfaces, which i hope it does, you will definitely see different Nintendo faces taking credit for the game this time.

I would assume 2018 we see some western first-party games (NST, NLG, Retro). Hopefully we see some more contracted stuff from Tantalus, Mercury Stream and other studios. We could definitely use some remasters and ports to maintain steady releases.

It'd be great to see what the young guys do. Man Nintendo is so great at developing their young guys to take over all these series.

We have to see Retro's game and I'm hoping we see NLG's game next year.

Yeah. It will be interesting to see how many first-party games release across all 3 major platforms (NSW, 3DS, iOS/AND). The 3DS had a monster 2017 despite most game under-performing.

Oh so Hayashida was a producer for Odyssey after all. I just remembered to check after someone here mentioned Koizumi. It's weird how he wasn't mentioned at all pre-release (as far as I know).

speaking of NST, I've been following Nintendo's Jobs twitter account for a long while now, and I've noticed they always have hirings. usually for stuff like technical artists and whatnot. makes we wonder just what are they working on. I'd assume it's an assisting position for a game (maybe Retro's?) since they're always technical stuff and even the occasional lead designer

It's NST, so they're probably doing another Mario vs. Donkey Kong game.

Excellent thread. Thanks, OP! I'm looking forward to seeing what a lot of these groups have in store for 2018.

So do you guys think that we'll get Pokémon Gen 8 in 2018 or 2019?
The way it seems I'm not even sure if Pokemon Company/Game Freak has any idea yet. They don't seem confident in making 2018, but it's not really in the sense of being certain it will be in 2019, either. Just, well. . . a lack of confidence.

I legit give it a coinflip. It depends on how smoothly development goes from here.

I'd give anything for a donkey country/ tropical freeze bundle for switch. I only had a borrowed wiiU but tropical freeze was soooooo good. I needs it.

Normally I'd agree, but Mario Maker 3DS sold too well for them to continue that sort of grunt work.

Mario Maker 3DS was grunt work itself though, was it not? It wasn't a fully original title, just a downscaled Wii U game.

If not another Mario VS Donkey Kong game, maybe they're working on another port? What else could they be working on?

Makes sense. I originally thought 2019, but I can see the argument of Pokémon being Holiday 2018's heavy-hitter. Though that all depends on if Game Freak can get it done in time. There's also the Sun/Moon anime to consider, but they could very well wrap things up by Holiday 2018 if they wanted to.

While the level design for the new levels came from EPD, SMM3DS was much much much more than just a downscaled Wii U port.

I haven't played it myself. What was so different about it compared to the Wii U version?
It contained a full new 2D Mario "campaign" (we need to have a thread for this again here, there recently was one in the old place where it turned out nobody actually realized there was a new 2D Mario hidden in SMM3DS). Again, level design came from EPD in Japan but they also added the ability for cooperative level-design with the local sharing.

I really don't care what NST is doing. It's nice they helped with Snipperclips, but they don't do anything for me other than that.

I don't think NST is going to do something big ever again after the whole Project H.A.M.M.E.R. debacle so they will most likely be relegated to little titles that are bound to sell well.

Retro Studios and Next Level Games are the only Nintendo Western studios that are worth paying attention to at the moment. I hope Nintendo works with other competent ones in the future.

My dream game announcement for the Switch is a new WaveRace made by Monster Games. They did such a good job with Excite Truck, and Bots, as well as Pilotwings on 3DS, which I consider a very under appreciated game. On that note, my second dream game announcement for Switch would be Pilotwings. I just hope Nintendo continues to keep Monster in the fold, and I really hope Nintendo sees racing/flight games as a genre still worth pursuing outside of Mario Kart. Monster seems like a perfect fit for projects like that.

Yeah I think a refresh on 2D Mario would be strong for 2018 (or 2019) holiday.

I think playing to pent-up fan dreams, like they have with 3D Zelda and 3D Mario this year, could make an extremely appealing game. That would mean, in this case, changing up the aesthetics mostly and finding a way to draw attention and making the game seem like it is Super Mario Brothers 5 and not just a series of echoes of old games presented in a sterile way. It doesn't really matter how fair this negative impression of NSMB is, just as it didn't particularly matter with Zelda and 3D Mario. I think a shift along these lines would give the game 'presence' and word of mouth.

Strong level design and multiplayer would help drive that long term among an expanded audience but a fresh start for 2D Mario could get the ball rolling.

I love everything about this post. I've been thinking the same for a while now. They desperately need to leave the NSMB art style behind, and really give a 2D Mario game the kind of creative edge the 3D games have been getting over the past decade. I actually had a specific idea for a new 2D Mario the other day. Mario is trapped in other 80's arcade machines. Imagine a stylized take on 80's era graphics, with a futuristic pixel/modern vibe. Neon, NES console iconography, etc.

Cool to see this thread here. Still don't know what to expect from Retro but I'm expecting something great at the very least (and I'm praying that is Startropics, wasn't there a rumour about them making it at some point?).

I don't think they're working in a new Donkey Kong though since that wouldn't have taken so long to develop. Also, considering that Monster Games helped to create Tropical Freeze and ported Returns to the 3DS with new levels, it could be possible that they're developing a third entry in the franchise.

Monster Games just put out Nascar Heat 2 on Sep 12. I don't think they're a very large studio (I could be wrong about that though) so they probably haven't been working on any games for Nintendo.

Indeed, reading the interviews in Edge of the next generation of creative and producing leads at Nintendo make me optimistic for their future. They have been better at not letting it all hinge on one or two creative personalities like Ghibli has. Miyamoto seems pretty good in that overall guidance/ mentor role.

Now Odyssey has released I'm hoping we may get some news on Mario Maker in the next couple of months. Just a gut feeling. But I hope I'm right.

I think so to, although I think we might see a "New Super Mario" game earlier but im sure we will get Mario Maker later down the line.

Looking at the release dates from other Mario games there is normaly only 1-2 years between them on "home" consoles.

NST could go in a few different directions:

a) become the Mario Maker 2 team (while Nintendo EPD refreshes or refines 4 player NMSB)
b) become the port / remaster studio
c) go back to making the B-budget extreme Nintendo racers (excite, wave race, 1080, etc)

didnt they make a bid to become a mobile studio at some point? Nintendo could leverage that. of course, they could also go route C and fill the Switch lineup as well

They may have wanted to pitch a mobile game, not necessarily be a 100% mobile studio. But Nintendo is being very selective of how many and what games they publish on mobile platforms.

But I really feel like Mario Maker 2 (or Donkey Kong Maker) would be a sensible direction and replacement to the Mario vs DK series for NST.

I think a Mario Maker 2 is within their limits. But I wouldn't trust NST to handle something new though, like a 2D Zelda Maker for instance. I imagine EPD would want to handle that themselves.

If they moved up to become a B-tier studio making smaller games like Wave Race and Pilot Wings that would be ideal.

Hmm. Since she's an admin I'm not sure if it's kosher to still talk about her pre-NX reports, so definitely strike me down if I'm doing something wrong. Anyway, remember how Emily Rogers reported that Nintendo were developing Mario Maker prototypes for Switch, but also cautioned that just because they're in development doesn't mean they'll be released? Considering Mario Maker on 3DS gutted most of the online features despite otherwise being a respectable port, I've always had a personal theory NST were experimenting with porting it to the Switch, but then for whatever reason that was axed and they moved it to 3DS instead. So with that in mind, NST working on Mario Maker 2 would make a lot of sense.

Next Level Games is making: Metroid Prime 4 or Luigi Mansion 3.
Retro Studios is the mystery right now. So, i have 3 theories:
a) Retro is making another DKC and another game, that would explain the long time to finish/announce new games.
b) Retro is making new IP or a new take on some Nintendo series, like Kid Icarus or Donkey Kong 3D.Again, that would explain the long time to finish/announce new games.
c) Retro is in "development hell" with whatever game they are making.

I can't imagine Retro is only cooking a new DKC for 4 years. By February 2018, will make 4 years since last game Retro launched.

I really hope it's LM3 and not prime 4. NLG style does just not fit metroid in any way.
