I feel like the film would've done a looot better had it not released during such a busy period, especially taking Avengers into account. But oh well, my avatar says enough about what I was initially expecting lol. Don't let me take bets on this shit again!

Saw it again this weekend, and enjoyed it a lot more than the first time around now that it was easier to understand the plot points.

If the movie is successful enough for Legendary to pursue another live action Pokemon, I hope it is in a different style. Definitely felt like they got the CGI Pokemon and world right, but not the story.

Yeah saw it yesterday, John Wick 3 had a line out the theater it was nuts. We were one of a few in there seeing Pokemon. Was nice for me but not for the filmmakers lol

For me the CGI in the movie was very average .... Maybe it was not so costly to produce and the movie will break even.

I saw it today as well and really enjoyed it. Ryan Reynolds did an amazing job, the plot was not too convoluted, and the whole movie was pretty tight. I think WB is smart enough to realize that the movie would be a bit bigger had it not released right near Endgame, which has surprised a lot of people with its own legs. Despite this, the movie does seem to be showing good legs both domestically and internationally.

I don't think this movie has to be really profitable in terms of box office for it to be good for the Pokémon company. It's such a big property across so many mediums (toys, cards, video games, anime) that you can't really measure the effect a movie like this has on audiences. There could be families buying a whole pile of Pokémon stuff for the next year because of it.
This.

Detective Pikachu looks set to break even in terms of ticket sales. Not trying to damage control, but unlike competing films, you can't really put a price upon the effect this movie (and its generally positive reception) will have on Pokémon brand awareness. This results in more PokéGo usage, increased sales of this Christmas' Switch Pokémon game, merchandise sales, and most importantly, new long-term fans of the franchise.

If Pokémon movies turn out to be hugely profitable, that is just the icing on the cake.

WB tried to counterprogram it with Shazam and Pikachu and ended up hurting both movies.

That's 150M (budget) x 3. What people use for the break even point considering marketing budget and cuts to their Box Office results by the cinema chains, taxes, etc.

tho I think Pikachu is closer to 2.5x, so 380M I guess already makes some profit. If it's truly 450M, then oof.
Isn't 2x the normal amount?

Are we going to have a thread once a week about pokemon numbers? lol
I think with the production money and the box office numbers, its going to end up being a box office bomb or break even at best.

Angola / Zaire border region.
Before seeing it I would have expected the movie to be smash hit, but after seeing it last week I'm not surprised it's struggling. Aside from the Pokemon being cool the movie pretty much sucks.

Man, I haven't got the chance to watch it. I was so hyped about it as well.

It's no surprise how huge Pokemon's pull is. It could have been an awful movie but it will still get huge numbers. Glad that it's actually a great movie that doesn't stray from it's videogame roots and in fact double downs on it.

It was a fun movie. The last 1/3 was trash. I'm not a Pokémon fan or a kid and I still came away enjoying it for the most part. It was better than Endgame by a long shot. So judging by how that's done it definitely deserves better.

it's funny how easily people were throwing around 1b weeks ago. Then again people throw around 1b for every fucking movie these days, as if 1b is the new 300mill.

This is good news, yes? Marvel movies have broken my bar of what's now supposed to be great or not so great box office returns for tent pole releases in would-be franchises.

Surprised it's taking so long to reach $100 domestically. I thought it was good.

But at the same time.... I had no idea the movie came out on Mother's Day weekend. Marketing push seemed....really weak up to the release. I don't even recall seeing the second trailer in any movies either.

Yeah :/ for a low budget movie, these numbers would be great...but I feel like for what they must have spent on VFX alone, this movie needs to do much better. I want it to do better, because it was a great fun movie.

Pikachu's budget is $150 million without marketing.
Ghostbusters 2016 had a budget of $144 million and the director of that movie said it needed to make $500 million on the low end to make a profit. Now obviously Pikachu and Ghostbusters don't have the exact same marketing budget but it gives you a general idea of where Pikachu needs to get in order to make a break even. Also remember that WB/Legendary haven't made $287 million on the movie, in the US theaters get about half of the ticket price and WB/Legendary typically make less in international territories which is why that break even number is so high.

The amount of armchair box office pros on this forum will never stop being odd to me.
Yah it's quite hilarious indeed. The reality is nobody here knows what WB, Legendary and The Pokemon Company were expecting from this. The Pokemon Company have the most to gain from this due to merchandising and overall brand awareness. I'm sure this film also helped Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee and Pokemon Go (which did do a promotion/event during the release). The thing to consider is who made what in this deal. There is a reason why most blockbusters have like 5+ logos at the start of every film, it's to mitigate the risk.

There is also promotional opportunities at play. I know 7 Eleven and Build-A-Bear are two I've seen, I'm not aware of any others. You would be surprised what these studios can make from a film that is marketable beyond the film itself. For example, did you know that a film like 'Man of Steel' made most of it's production budget back before it even hit cinemas? It made $170M in promotional dollars on a $225M budget. It only needed it's box office take to recoup it's marketing budget and what little remained of it's production budget, which it did easily in it's first week. 'Man of Steel" proves that not all films are created equal and therefore the 2x-3x thing that is thrown around when discussing box office is simply an estimation and never tells the whole story.

Now I'm not saying that the Pokemon: Detective Pikachu movie had the same promotional opportunities as Man of Steel, the biggest of which being product placement in the film. I'm simply stating that we are not privy to what is discussed behind the scenes to accurately determine what is or isn't a success for all involved.

Yep, MCU box office returns broke me. I see under $300 million and I can't be sure if that's a good thing or bad.

Saw this with my youngest on Sat, She loved it, thought it was great.

I thought it was an absolute letdown. The definition of everything good being in the trailers.
I guess there will be a sequel. Don't see how though.

Where does this 450 million figure come from? I asked SweetNicole last time but didn't get a response.

I need to know this as well, it doesn't makes sense to me, but since my knowledge is pretty bad if I see actual proof I don't have any problem believing it.

300 million ww marketing cost for a pretty standard campaign would make so, so many "successful" movies in the past years super bombs.

I'll be interested to see where it ends up. A Pokemon movie of this caliber should be hitting $500m imo.

Box office specialists: "Detective Pikachu is doing well and has had a strong start"
People on forums: "This movie is performing badly. It should be so much higher. It has flopped"

The 450 is just a made up highly exaggerated number.

Anyway the movie does good and the success will probably lead to more Pokemon movies.

Yep, my local cinema only has one screen showing Detective Pikachu (and it's an IMAX one so it costs more) so it was annoying to find a time to go see it at all because Avengers was on almost every other screen. That said our screen was also basically empty 🤷‍♀️

Oddly enough, of the 3 movies Ive seen this summer, Avengers, John Wick, and Pikachu, I wanna see Pikachu again the most. There's definitely heavy competition in movies right now so glad it seems to be doing well. Can't wait for the blu ray release.
probably because there is so much to see in the movies that you mind can't proccess it all
