The founder of Huawei, Ren Zhengfei, has said the US "underestimates" the telecom giant's strength, and that conflict with America was inevitable in the quest to "stand on top of the world".

However, Ren said on Tuesday: "The US 90-day temporary licence does not have much impact on us. We are ready."

Interesting...could Huawei be a third player? IOS, Android and something else?

Possible, and it's been looked at not just Huawei, but also Samsung with Tinzen, and other various country not wanting to depend on one source and one country.

Which might be good or bad depending on your point of view and if more fragmention is bad, or if competition will force Google and Apple to step up?

But it's not as easy saying to do and actually doing it, China is already almost having their own ecosystem and stuff.

Wouldn't be surprised if Huawei puts out some sick phone operating system. Their hardware is top notch so why not go for software too?

I guess if China mandated that only Huawei phones could be sold in China, they could. But good luck breaking into the iOS-Android duopoly in the rest of the world.

I think one long-term effect of what's going on is China's going to end up with a very separate electronic ecosystem from the rest of the world, though it may be exported to satellite states like some in Africa and North Korea.

I'd even put a 10-15% shot that the internet eventually gets shut off entirely between the Western and Eastern electronic ecosystems.

Their EMUI Launcher isn't really great so far. However, I also think that Huawei could simply fork Android. The pinnacle would be going full open source. All privacy talk would be also reduced hugely.

I know Google are trying to solve the Android fragmentation problem with Android One, but leaving it unchecked for years has actually made this whole Huawei situation more palatable than it should be.

Users are accustomed to getting late or non-existent OS updates. And now the threat is... non-existent OS updates.

For the what 11th year straight, Android forks are going to be the big bad that takes the world by storm right?

Its amazing to me how lightly people take iOS and Android and what they have built. Its like Windows Phone didn't spend billions and years trying to emulate it and failed followed by Amazon spending billions of dollars and practically dedicating their homepage to Fire tablets and failed too. No one seems to respect how difficult it is to replace these OS's.

Huawei might have a chance in China only, assuming their government cripples iOS and Google there; but that shits a literal no go everywhere else.

That's not at all what I was saying. Android is an incredible achievement, and Huawei stand zero chance of replicating it.

My point was that I find all the doom and gloom headlines about Huawei users facing a future of no security updates etc. amusing. Most of these people probably haven't had a security update this year anyway.

As a Chinese company you don't get far without CCP integration and Huawei especially seems to be an extension of the state, so I doubt it's really going anywhere.

This is like the 20th time I see Tinzen in the last two days. It's Tizen. And it was primarily developed because Android sucks on more embedded systems (although I'm sure over time Samsung hoped it could be a competitor, much like Bixby).

They should invest billions into Ubuntu Touch or fork it. Either way their OS can only succeed if it's fully open source.

If this is their play then the decision to freeze them out was the correct one..

would personally never buy their products because of the stolen tech

This is making me not want them to be the UK's 5G supplier. Really thought they were going to take the high road with it being Trump, but no, they decided to play the gutter ball too. Ok.

Could also go /e/, Android works without any google play services at all.

Have you used Tizen? I can count the amount of useful apps with 2 hands.

Which is why I don't think it won't be awhile for a third OS to appear, even with Samsung putting their thing on tinzen which started in 2012, it is still not comparable to Google and Apple.

China is a different situation, in that it is possible to be a closed system and being the only option avaible to people, like how Baidu replaced google for search, news, etc, Bilibili for video like youtube.

And if Huawei can make/copy a OS that is simple enough to use with comparable app that people use on GOogle and iOS, then they can continue selling their phone, but now with the software and ecosystem based in China, instead of standard security check by Google or Apple for their os.

And China isn't a small market, so it might not be good for smaller dev, if they want to make app not just for iOS and Android, but for whatever OS that China is using.

If their new OS doesn't have most popular Western apps (some of which are made by Goole, and more are made by American companies) then they have no chance succeeding in the West as OS without apps is worthless.

Operating system is useless without ecosystem. No matter how good the OS is, android and iOS are way, WAY too entrenched for anyone to come up with a third competitor at this point

It certainly won't be easy if other US tech companies are forced to pull their apps from Huawei devices.

Plus developing an OS wether it's a fork of an existing one or from the ground up will take a long time and will require them to convince devs to make apps for it.

My fear is they will make a locked down closed source OS that restricts the ability of vulnerable people to get around state surveillance.

The CCP can theoretically declare the new OS the official state OS, and demand that any phone released for domestic use run it. You won't have trouble finding devs at that point.
