Samsung TVs.

So Samsung TVs get 4K iTunes movies... but if you own a Mac from 2017 or earlier (apparently, no matter how spec'd out) then 1080p and tough shit for you. I'm mad bitter about this.

  1. A subscription is required for Apple Music.
  2. 4K, 4K HDR, 4K Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and HDR10 content is available on all Mac models introduced in 2018 or later with 4K-resolution screens.
  3. Some services require a subscription
  4. Dolby Atmos is available on Mac notebooks introduced in 2018 or later.
  5. Some features require Sidecar-enabled apps.

Eh? Are the 4k/5k iMacs even hdr capable?

Thank you guys for your opinions!

I will purchase the iPhone XS Max later today directly from the Apple Store.

Is there any accessory that you think I should buy?

Also, I tend to not protect my smartphones with covers and such, but I guess I should with how expensive this device is. Any advice in this regard as well?

Thanks a bunch!

If anyone is interested I'm selling my wife's (like new) Gen 3 Apple Watch in the buy/sell/trade thread.

Nevermind, already sold. Haha

I backed up my iPad mini and was ready to try out the beta, only to find that it doesn't seem to be possible (at least, not on Windows) to install the beta on the mini 5 or Air 3. I guess I'm waiting a few months. :(

They're a little on the pricey side and there are probably cheaper non-Apple alternatives, but I'm a fan of the Apple leather cases for their phones.

Sign On with Apple sounds interesting on paper.
What's the general opinion of how much merits it has and how well it will protect your privacy?

Hello guys.

I'm forced to upgrade/replace my current iPhone. I was using an iPhone 6s plus for some years and I were quite satisfied by it.

Unfortunately I broke its screen for the second time, and I feel going through repairs again is not worth the price at this point.

I know the "wisest" thing would be to wait for the next line of phones that will hit this year (and we are so close to it), but I don't want to stay with a broken screen phone either, especially since I use it a lot everyday.

I'm thinking of purchasing the iPhone XS Max, and I'd like to know if there's any reasons why I shouldn't? (No money issue)

I like playing games on the phone a lot, so that would be my primary use.
Honestly I don't think you'll be missing out too much by not waiting for the XI. It's nice to have a new phone for summer. The XI will have the same notch and will mainly be adding another lens and the ability to wirelessly charge AirPods.

Your implying that the next iPhone won't be a huge step up from last year's XS line? Didn't follow any leaks recently so I don't really know what the expect from the XI or whatever it will be called.

I don't think there's been any confirmation one way or the other wrt the notch? We only know the new phones will have square-shaped camera arrays.

It generates throwaway emails for every service you sign in with, you can choose if you want to share certain data with the service and all apps that incorporate any form of SSO will be forced to adopt it. It's pretty much as convenient as it gets while giving you a lot of control. Honestly I wish they'd force all apps to use it that require a sign up. Also glad I can finally give the finger to those apps that wanted me to sign up using either google or facebook for no good reason other than likely hijacking all the data that comes with that :)

Sounds good but I wonder how big and fast the adoption rate will be?

Thanks! I want to buy a new iPad soon and all of this will come handy.
I just hope that more sooner then later Apps like VLC can also access USB-Sticks, etc, my take of the presentation was that you only can look into the Storage via the Files App.

Any app that supports using Files providers should support accessing USB drives too.

I wonder if iPhone getting dark mode will drive the web to start offering dark versions more commonly and even a dark version request by the browser can be a thing? That feels like the final frontier. Although there is the reader mode to make up a bit for it on the meanwhile.

apple actually already added support for websites to check for dark mode and apply different CSS in safari a few months back

Would it be wise to purchase a 2019 iMac now? I suspect there's a redesign around the corner and a possible migration to apple chips instead of intel as well, and i know I'll be super pissed if they announce them in fall.

But I've been waiting for a year now, I'm kind of tired of waiting, redesign should have come out by now :(

No way they'll announce an ARM transition before the Mac Pro even ships. Wouldn't be surprised at a spec update though.

They announced that any AppStore app that uses ie Google or Facebook SSO will be required to adopt it. It also seems really simple to implement in general and isn't locked behind the developer account paywall (from what i can tell) so hopefully it gains a lot of traction.

More info and dev documentation: https://developer.apple.com/sign-in-with-apple/

How does that work for cross platform apps? Say I sign up for Netflix on my iphone and it generates a unique email address - how do I then sign in on my PC web browser? Have to type in some horrible one time email/password? (assume this will sync to safari for those with macs)

there always gonna be the latest and greatest in the pipeline... but i think you are good for now with the iMac. and those arm chips may go through a tough transition period so it ain't a bad idea to get this intel imac

You'll still be signing in with your Apple ID, it's just that address won't be handed over to the app/website. Like, once you're on the site and click "sign in with Apple" you're gonna be redirected to an Apple owned site to sign in, then Apple will hand over the unique address to the site (obviously they'll always give a site/app the same address)

Somebody know how I can execute ssh commands on my Mac mini at home when I'm on the go? It has a static IP in my home network and I have OpenVPN running on my raspberry pi with a DynDNS service on my router so i could do it that way but I wanna skip the VPN part/not rely on it. Somehow I should be able to leverage the already configured dyndns for that, no?

E: iirc I had to do some port forwarding work on the raspi. I guess that's what I'm looking for on macOS too, will need to check it out at home

E2: Joke's on me, I just configured Screens and the manual included SSH too lol. Works great. Nice. Another step in the right direction for a seamless macOS x iOS integration

Have we heard anything on whether it is possible to connect and interact with storage media on non-iPad Pros such as the iPad Mini 5 using those various camera adapter lightening cords Apple has? Every video and impression about connecting external storage for iPadOS has been iPad Pro focused utilizing USB-C.

So I'm looking into eventually getting a Mac mini to replace my 2013 iMac but it only has two USB3 ports. It has 4 USB-C ports but I don't have any USB-C hard drives. So I was thinking of just getting like four USB-C to USB3 dongles. Would that be reliable for connecting a bunch of hard drives? If so, any recommendations on a brand to use?

There's a very good chance that most sites that are data mining you aren't going to be offering this. It'll be great for apps by smaller devs or individuals, though.

If an app offers a third party login service, they are required to offer Apple Sign-On. So even the big companies, if they have apps, they either have to add Apple or drop Facebook/Google

I've been putting off replacing my MacBook Pro for an iPad Pro for a while, but this new update I think I'm finally going to take the plunge. Are we expecting new Ipad pros some time this year?

Then they'll drop Facebook/Google or pull their apps before they add Apple sign-in. Apple isn't gonna bully around big companies like they do regular devs.

There's no way devs are going to removing FB/Google sign-ins to avoid Apple sign in. The value of a bit of additional demographic information is nowhere near that of dropping subscribers.

Is signing on through a third party app instead of signing up a regular account really that much of a deterrent to users?

1. Yes, but even more importantly,
2. What happens to all your existing customers who have accounts only through Google and Facebook? They don't have usernames or passwords for your app/service. If you remove 3rd party login, all those customers' accounts are inaccessible.

Not really. You just need to be send a password, they already know your email. I did just that on several websites that I used to use Facebook as a login on, like Goodreads.

But I've never not signed up to a thing because it didn't offer Google sign-in.

Hell yeah. It was created in the first place to make it easier for people to join up to whatever. People don't like making new logins. Barrier of entry.

I personally made unique IDs but I'd use Apple's option going forward.

So my refurbished iPhone 7 arrived today and so far so good. It has some scratches but I'm loving the experience. The home button and 3D Touch are freaking nice and the camera doesn't disappoint me. The only downside is the battery, but oh well.

For 319€ it was not a bad deal at all, I think.

Where did you buy it? I've never purchased a refurb from Apple that had any sort of cosmetic issue.

I didn't buy it from Apple. I bought it from a chain that sells refurbished iPhones. New screen, battery at 98%. Pretty good stuff.

Yeah it has some scratches on the back and you can say it's used, bur between this and buying a new one for 540€, I guess i take this one. A case will hide most of the scratches.

what case did you end up going with?

And you said you were coming from a 6S right? that's a hell of a jump lol

I bought a silicon black case directly from the App Store.
I decided to not buy the leather one because I use a "metal ring" thing that lets me use the device with one hand and it doesn't stick well on leather.

Also bought the glass protector and have Apple applying it.

I'm looking forward to that Apple sign-in feature if only because it'll make it really easy to tell what sites sent out my email information for spam purposes (plus the ones who have no "click this checkbox to subscribe" but do auto-sign you up).

I know Gmail has that thing with using dots to know where your email is being used from, but no way in hell would I have Google anywhere near my email account for being a primary source.
