Fucking lol haha.

Speaking of actual progressive thrash... what would be the pioneers of the genre? I vote Anacrusis or maybe Voivod. :)
Anacrusis I would say came a bit later than voivod and watchtower in the emergence of prog thrash, but we are talking about year or two at most. One band you need to give props to is Blind Illusion, please check out the early demos with David White from Heathen on vocals. Those early Anacrusis demos are so fucking good too.

Prog thrash really started to define and dig in its roots by 87 when more bands were making it a defining sound rather than incorprating it. then I think had its best output in the early 90s, so many classic examples.

Though the Germans perfected it in 1988 with the masterpieces from Deathrow and Sieges Even

A bit of a scattershot list since my laptop is kaput right now, probably some that are familiar but hopefully not all.

Sunless-produced by Colin Marston, happens to also sounds like post reunion Gorguts
https://sunlessband.bandcamp.com/album/urraca

Excommunion-death metal from the Nightbringer crew, and it sounds like it
https://darkdescentrecords.bandcamp.com/album/thronosis

Hate Inclination-one man band with a super weird guitar tone, but the material is great
https://hateinclination.bandcamp.com/

Sutrah-long form Canadian technical death in the Quebec mold

Howls of Ebb/Kthoniik Cerviiks split - in looking for a streaming link, just now saw that HoB are dead. Goddamn it. Anyway, both great bands.

Bufihimat-tad overproduced but otherwise pretty good mathy dm
https://bufihimat.bandcamp.com/album/i

Oksennus-somewhat akin to that split above or maybe something like Antediluvian.. just odd

Sick, thanks for all that. I'll dig in.

In weird metal more generally, Jute Gyte's been delivering reliably for a while now.

Not really a fan of Asking Alexandria (I like 1 song by them, Dear Insanity), and their new album is barely metal, but I am really enjoying it. Like a lot.

Came in after listening to the track previews expecting to like Eve and Rise Up the most (2 of the heavier tracks on the album), but came away with Under Denver (Catchiest chorus of the year???) and Vultures (an acoustic track) as my favorites. Even enjoy the track with the rapper feature.

Overall, I am incredibly surprised at how much I enjoy this album. Not album of the year material or anything, but a great way to end the year.

AOTY(s) still goes to The Contortionist, Make Them Suffer, and Veil of Maya imo.
Checked out the songs you mentioned because I remember this band from wayyyyy back when.. Honestly hadn't heard anything since their second album. I don't listen to metalcore these days but damn --- this shit is pretty awful ;) Definitely not the chorus of the year, lol.
Glad you enjoy it though.

I'm with you on the contortionists album though -- have been in love since I caught them live. Definitely rides the line on "is it metal" tho.

Haha yea, I accept that the music isn't very good, but I find it super catchy. I love the synth's in the chorus :)
Still hate all of their old material.

The Contortionist yea, borderline metal as well but overall I like it more consistently than Langauge. Also their live shows are so fucking good, Lessard is just a phenomenal vocalist.

Overall this has been a pretty crazy good year for Metal but I'm not sure if it tops last year for me (ERRA, Fallujah, Black Crown initiate are pretty unbeatable). If you don't listen to much metalcore anymore I highly recommend Make Them Suffer (Vortex), Veil of Maya (Doublespeak), and Crystal Lake (Apollo). I was introduced to metal via metalcore but fell off like back in 2008 but started listening to it again and am really enjoying it for what it is.

Completely agree about Mike Lessard -- incredible frontman. Got to see them tour Language and Clairvoyant this year. It doesn't quite satisfy me as much as Language (language seemed like a showcase for Lessard's vocals -- some serious range on that album) -- the new album is great but the vocals are a little low on the mix and he just doesn't display all his abilities... Which may just be their first "real" album together and he was focusing more on atmosphere rather than showing off his pipes. Either way -- one of my favorite bands for sure.
I dug Veil of Maya when they were deathcorey (last singer) but the new guy really doesn't do much for me. I did play a good bit of the first album with the new singer and it definitely had some good hooks -- but didn't hit me like It's Not Safe to Swim. My favs in metalcore were always "Architects, Parkway Drive, Invent Animate, and Failure in Vanity (my absolute favorite).

And last year's Fallujah was incredible. Got to see them live with BTBAM and they stole the show.

edit: And I'd say this year was better for me, in terms of metal releases:

Elder
Pallbearer
Hallatar
Boris
Chelsea Wolfe
Bell Witch
Primitive Man
Loss
'68 (fucking rule)
CLOUDS
HELL
Ne Obliviscaris

To me this year kind of sucked for metal releases in that the weekly drops seem sparse. Last year seemed to have some kick ass music every week but this year was a lot more subdued. Seemingly anyway.

My AotY is Bear Mace - Butchering the Colossus and I'm not changing it. This is some good old school death metal.

For second place I'm putting in The Grave Alchemist from All Hell. I love the Castlevania theme and while the album does have its flaws I think its damn good. If it was as energetic as the Bear Mace it would be my number one.

Busting out the swine for the third spot with Dead Head - Swine Plague. I love thrash like this so no brainer there.

Still rolling strong is my number four in Obituary. These guys just keep getting heavier.

Rounding out the top five is Ewigkeit with Cosmic Man. This is kind of weird and catchy at the same time.

From here its a grab bag of hard decisions aka my honorable mentions.

Aeternam - Ruins of Empires
Bloody Hammers - The Horrific Case of Bloody Hammers
Cormorant - Diaspora
Elder - Reflections of a Floating World
Ghost Bath - Starmourner
God Dethroned - The World Ablaze
Igorrr - Savage Sinusoid
Immolation - Atonement
Ne Obliviscaris - Urn
Necrot - Blood Offerings
Power Trip - Nightmare Logic
Ruby the Hatchet - Planetary Space Child
Stass - The Darkside
Temple of Void - Lords of Death
Witch of 1692 - Impious Mysterial Hymn
Yellow Eyes - Immersion Trench Reverie

Holy shit at Hate Inclination's sound. I liked one song very much, gotta listen to the album. Reminded me a bit of both Deeds of Flesh and Demilich, in some ways.

Sunless sounds like Krallice too, will also listen.

Quoting for future reference. Thanks.

That HI is super weird but after listening to it for awhile can't really imagine it sounding any other way. And yeah that Sunless is reminiscent of newer Ygg Hurr/Loum material.

On the subject of prog thrash, anyone else been listening to Droid?

Yes, definitely Voivod-esque, more so than Vektor ever was, but they have enough going on to differentiate themselves.

Song of the Day

Today I nearly dropped the ball lol. Was sitting there thinking its getting late and no daily tune...then I realized today was me! So today we're going with a new to me band, Mgla. I kind of blind bought their three albums and really, really enjoyed them a lot. Exercises in Futility is probably my favorite so far but With Hearts Towards None is right up there with it and this particular song though a bit longer has a really cool structure that you don't really notice the length with the way it flows.

Damn, Katatonia posted the other day they're on a bit of a hiatus:

Following our re-scheduled dates for the Baltics and Russia in Feb/March, due to recent issues and injury, it will mark the end of the touring cycle for "The Fall of Hearts" and after much deliberation we have decided that we will put Katatonia on a short-term hiatus.

We need to take some time out to re-evaluate what the future holds for the band. Unfortunately this will affect the live dates in Norway, Germany, Spain and Poland, and we are deeply sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Really hope they don't break up.

Running late today so I thought I would throw out a track off of one of my favorite albums (Aeternus - Beyond The Wandering Moon). A mix of black/death, but the band terms them self "dark metal". Was so glad I got to catch them when they came to the US a few years ago and can't wait to see them again next year as they are planning a US tour.

Katatonia has been going for so long and been through so much throughout the years, they've seen and done it all. Legendary band with a legendary history and story, but it feels like the end of the road.

Yeah, Katatonia has been around so long and always puts out such solid releases it'd be sad to see them go. At least if they do go then they went out on top, really, because their last album was really fucking good.

I'm sure some of the band will keep putting out music maybe in other forms, so we'll hear from them. Who knows.

Katatonia's influence on metal bands around the world today is way underrated and will only grow for a long, long time.

Two bands with some obvious and less obvious Katatonia influence that I've been listening to lately:

TGCD era Katatonia influence: Nevain 'Silence Within' (2017, "Atmospheric Doom Metal" yeah right the genre is Katatonia)

https://nevain.bandcamp.com/album/silence-within
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt1_wJjdhss

BMD era Katatonia influence: Skalmold's newish track 'Höndin sem veggina klórar' (2017, Viking). The influence doesn't hit you over the head, but the style and atmosphere of the riffs and how they intertwine is familiar.

Primordial - Empire Falls

Primordial are another incredible and unique band with an almost flawless discography. Falling somewhere in between black metal, folk, and traditional metal styles, they really have their own sound that I love. This song is one of my favorites. Really encourage anyone who hasn't listened to them before to check out this song as I think they have a lot to offer for many different tastes.

Did they rerecord Zeal and Ardor between when they took it down everywhere and put it back up? I was just listening to the spotify version instead of the version I had downloaded when I bought it on Bandcamp last year and it sounds noticeably different. I feel like this is a real band whereas the first recording wasn't, but... I like the first recording more. More punchy.

I never knew I wanted a new album that could be compared stylistically to In the Nightside Eclipse this badly, but Werewolf Records is delivering it to us next month (although there are reports that LPs are shipping now). Behold Vargrav. Honestly I'm generally not a fan for a certain type of bombast in a black metal context, and tags like "symphonic" usually turn me away, but I hear nothing but good shit here. ItNE is one of my all-time favorite albums, as it struck an incredible balance of brutality and finesse while never becoming too cheesy. This is very much in the same vein, maybe a tad more straightforward. Do check this out if you like the first Emeperor.

Try Amazon. I was just looking for these yesterday myself and it looks like their mostly there. Some remastered and some not listed as remasters. I just dropped a shitload of money on cd's so I may hold off on these for now but their definitely on my list.

It looks like Amazon.co.uk is the way to go, which makes sense. They have the remastered Battle Magic, but it's not clear if the version of Starfire is the remaster. The link from Bal-Sagoth's site links to that Amazon UK page isn't marked as the remaster. The Amazon UK page for the Battle Magic remaster is clearly indicated as the remaster, plus it has a new cover which makes it pretty obvious.

They remastered the first three yeah, but I don't know if they plan to do the rest. You can buy the physical CDs (or digital) from Bandcamp (and can stream it on Spotify/Google Music) but if you want the limited edition/vinyl ones you have to look for sellers. For example on Discogs there's a seller with the limited edition of the debut album: https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/9179897?ev=rb

https://cacophonousrecords.bandcamp.com/album/a-black-moon-broods-over-lemuria
https://cacophonousrecords.bandcamp...ng-upon-the-ice-veiled-throne-of-ultima-thule
https://cacophonousrecords.bandcamp.com/album/battle-magic

(I actually don't like the new art for the debut album lol). I like Bal-Sagoth but I am not a huge fan, if I were I'd be pretty annoyed and wouldn't buy the physical due to the art change since the debut album is by far my favourite.

Weird. Maybe something wrong with my ears that day. Doesn't sound too dissimilar now. I've gone made I guess.

I actually bought the vinyl too and it sounded slightly different but I chalked that up to being possibly a different master.

this rendition of Silent Night fascinates me .
Its silly
It's over the top
Some would say it destroys the original song .

But i love it .

Here would be my top 10 for this year. Was actually kind of hard to pick 10. Some have said it's been a bad year for metal but I don't feel that way. Lots of stuff I have enjoyed.

10. Ghost Bath - Starmourner
9. Sannhet - So Numb
8. Emptiness - Not for Music
7. Aosoth - V: The Inside Scriptures
6. Chaos Moon - Eschaton Memoire
5. Yellow Eyes - Immersion Trench Reverie
4. Black Cilice - Banished From Time
3. Power Trip - Nightmare Logic
2. Amenra - Mass VI
1. Bell Witch - Mirror Reaper

Honorable Mentions of stuff I really liked but didn't make top 10 (and to round out a top 20):
Violet Cold - Anomie
Spectral Voice - Eroded Corridors of Unbeing
Au Champ Des Morts - Dans la Joie
Dawn Ray'd - The Unlawful Assembly
Heretoir - The Circle
Royal Thunder - WICK
Emyn Muil - Under a Silvered Star
Paradise Lost - Medusa
Triumvir Foul - Spiritual Bloodshed
Blut Aus Nord - Deus Salutis Meae

Haven't seen too many others post their favorites from this year. Would love to see some other lists from people in this thread. I'm a big fan of top 10 lists at the end of the year as they help me find stuff I may have missed or skipped over and forgot about.

IngwerOrang is off on vacation this week and next so he passed along a list to pick from and I think there are two outstanding candidates for this week and next. At least to me. This particular song gripped me as soon as I put it on and though its longer I simply couldn't turn it off. This really feels like a song that details some epic journey which for whatever reason struck me as the song for today. So I bring you Arkona - Na Moey Zemle (In My Land) on behalf of IngwerOrang.
