When should we expect the S9 to be released? I'm contemplating between getting a S8 now or waiting for the S9 to be released (depending on how long it will take).

Another Christmas, another hunt around for a 7" tablet to replace my mums Nexus 7.

Not an iPad Mini though. She already has one and doesn't like it.

It takes the Samsung displays at least a year to show any visible burn-in of static elements like the notification bar. These phones have been available for a few weeks. Those displays are going to be absolutely ruined after a year.

At least? Took me on every single one I had about 2 weeks. I'll hate on AMOLED as long as this shit goes on :P

So I am looking into this for my wife (and my Note 8)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074G1W2RC/?tag=era0f0-20

Anyone use it? That is the brand I use for my Switch. I am wondering how it works with a case also.

Ot this one (leaning towards this one now)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075K48V3C/?tag=era0f0-20

both are dot matrix style ones with glue on the edges. expect lower touch responsiveness and rainbow effect at angles.

sadly the options are pretty limited for these curve screens.

Imagine if the phone manufacturers just went back to goddamn flat glass fronts for screens.

But of course the phone manufacturers aren't stupid, the reason for "3D glass" is so blatantly transparent, pun intended. If the phone is hard to get a screen protector on, most people will not use them, and when they fuck their phone up by shattering or scratching the screen up they will have to buy a new phone sooner.

This is also why phones have glass backs now, come to think of it. They love it when you shatter your phone, that's a new phone sale for them.

I have some liquid application screen protector on my pixel 2 xl. Doesn't feel the best but it protects it well enough from scratches

It's a good phone. If you want stockish android with a great camera it's the only option.

Heavily considering getting Pixel 2 through Verizon and just giving up root. I used to mess with custom ROMs and Kernels and stuff but for the past two years the only thing I actually use root for is adblock, and now that can apparently be done effectively without rooting. Plus if I get a Pixel I'll get regular software / security updates as long as I don't root.

Why do I need an unlocked bootloader / root?

I gave up on doing that shit years ago. Too much effort/issues for not enough gain.

Most everything can be done without the need to. Plus there are enough devices out there with different software looks that if you are buying a phone with the idea that you need to rom it I'd suggest just finding a different device to suit your needs.

I will say I NEVER use the edge function on my S8+. Like it might as well just not be there.

I don't feel I'm missing out on anything either. Probably the most worthless feature for ME on my device.

The World
Yesterday was my first, day trip after getting the Pixel 2 XL. Heavy phone use including watching videos.

Getting 6 hours SoT was amazing to see. Even if it ends up at 4-4.5 hours SoT in 6 months time I will be so happy.

And beautiful photos, everybody loves my camera especially combined with Snapseed.

Two questions... both sort of related.

1: Does anyone have a particular audio playing app they can recommend? I like Pi Music player, but it doesn't do gapless (from what I can tell). Poweramp was good, but I really can't get on with the interface.
2: On a related note, does anyone know of any audio apps that support Android Auto? I find Play Music to be complete garbage for listening to podcasts as you can't use the interface to fast forward / skip. Also, they've recently changed the interface, and now I can't find half my files through the car interface (I still can on the normal interface).

Seems functional at least. Not a massive fan of the way that you have to go back into the menu to select another downloaded podcast though.

For some reason that wouldn't load for me at all when I was in car mode.

Thanks though, will set them up when I'm in normal mode and try to load it from there.

I've been searching for one since October. No luck :(

The best app I've seen for transferring data between phones is Verizon's.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.verizon.contenttransfer
It's simple to use, works well and moves apps, media, contacts and anything else you can think of.
It's also capable of going from Android to iOS.
Does it move the app settings/saved configurations?

Well, I am getting a second dongle and an fabric case from Google for my Pixel 2 XL so I guess that means I am keeping this thing.

So far so good, loving the device so far.

So these USB-C earbuds finally came today after a month: https://m.ebay.com/itm/100-Original...Type-C-Plug-/272675022684?txnId=1901876239017

Here's the results with multiple Android phones:

Pixel 2 XL: only works when inserted upside down. Still sensitive - can be interrupted with a hairs push

HTC U11: works perfectly, no problems at all

Galaxy S8+: makes the music play 2x faster

OnePlus 5T: doesn't work at all

Pixel XL: works perfectly

USB audio is such a clusterfuck
