Nope, play till your fingers bleed. Ram seem to be the determining factor now. 16+ is the good spot. Less than that, you will get a decent amount of freezes

Yep, playing on a stock 3570k with an r290x and 16gb ram works fine. Just upgraded from 8gb this week and the extra headroom makes the game waaaay more playable. Don't expect 60fps though, currently performance is still bottlenecked somewhere. (No longer seems to be networking, hope they find something soon).

With a stable framerate and better frametimes the current build is incredible though. Not too much to do, but just exploring is great fun. We had out first Org meetup last week (before i got the upgrade even) and had a blast. Hope the builds get even better so we can try some more of those.

This was the question I had before, and I still have. Were performance improvement perceived from the ak patch mostly due to the lowered server population count? I do find it somewhat troubling that they initially hoped to bring bring the serve population to over 120 players, now they've lowered it to 30.

I'm really just hoping that these recent legal allegations don't significantly impact CIG's ability to work on 3.0 and Squadron 42.

OMG, finally Squadron 42 news next week!

Delaying the full reveal of Squadron 42 from a huge public facing conference like CitizenCon and relegating it to a holiday stream doesn't give me a lot of confidence to be honest. I want to be delightfully surprised, but it's hard to be hopeful. I assume Squadron 42 is the big title to pull the average consumer into investing in the Star Citizen universe. I'd be surprised if they wouldn't want their full unveiling to be a spectacle. This leads me to be believe that it won't arrive until late 2018, or Q1 2019. With all this being said, I'm just guessing they aren't going to show a ton, while leaving much of their talk to be about how their technology is progressing.

I'm still excited for it overall. My expectations are just tempered.

Teaser + Around the Verse? Doesn't sound like a full gameplay reveal. I'm still excited though!

They previously stated (multiple times) that they will show some live gameplay during their holiday stream :) so there's that + around the verse + the IGN teaser if I understand correctly.

gezuz fucking christ. may i ask what you do for a living?
Now you know, but that also doesn't really say anything. Someone making say 40k if single, can have that kind of discretionary income for their hobby. I mean it's far less likely, but 5k isn't so insane that it requires the person to be rich. Hell I have poor friends who spend that much on their cars like every other year. Or stereosystems. Etc.

Yep, people often dump lots of money into their hobbies, and Star Citizen takes on that role for some. Divide that level of investment across multiple years and it becomes even easier - especially if they don't have other vices like tobacco or alcohol eating into their spending money.

Anyone else run into a bug where the right stick on a wired XB1 controller is a billion times too sensitive? If I nudge it, the camera goes haywire. Left stick is fine. The same controller works properly in other games. Hell, the right stick even works fine in Star Citizen when I try to navigate menus with it.

I tried deleting my entire USER folder and set all controls and curves to default. Not sure what else to try.

edit: This is really weird. If I completely unbind both on-foot camera axis settings, the right stick works. Unfortunately, the sensitivity is way too low and it completely ignores the curve/sensitivity settings. This game is a mess.

Its like game is in still active development and can have basic bugs.
You are on PTU, so not even live release that is designed to reports bugs by community.
Report it on their Issue Council and they'll look into it.

I think the issue council is a good idea but it has a tough time dealing with serious but uncommon bugs. If five people can't replicate it, a developer won't hear about it. And from poking around the issue council, I couldn't find anyone with the same controller problem so I suspect my report won't go anywhere.

I'm frustrated because I just spent the last three weeks figuring out why the PTU crashed every single time I tried to launch it. I even went to the issue council only to have someone incorrectly mark my issue as a duplicate of another. A ticket submitted straight to CIG was closed after a ~10 day wait with a canned response.

Incidentally, my crashes were resolved by closing the launcher window as soon as I click Launch Game. If the launcher is open as the loading screen appears, the game crashes.

So I was pretty excited to finally try the PTU only to run into the controller issue a minute later.

Seems like a healthy approach to have. I'm expecting a rerun of the Morrow tour, this time in a near-finished state, and something else. Nothing too big, maybe a couple of cutscenes that reveal some of the actors we've yet to see. My dogecoins are on Scully.

Plus some tech talk, yeah. Which I'm always up for, but it's not exactly what you'd want for a "show S42 to the world, wow them" event. That'll come later. Gamescom next year, I'm guessing, with CitCon 2018 focusing once again on SC.

In any case, day off, junk food at the ready, as per tradition. Let's do this.

Eh, if they don't show mission gameplay of Squadron 42 I'll be disappointed, CG actors and on foot shit are nice to have but come on, we want to see cool dogfights.

It is always good to be weary, but honestly, I think they will show off a good amount of the gameplay variety: as per the vertical slice.
I think we wont get full vertical slice, but it would be awful if they didnt show any combat.
I expect at least some ground combat and some space combat, even if those wont be long due to maybe AI still not being completely finished etc. Maybe we will get ground combat section but solo, without any friendly AI etc.

Not my vid, but know I'm going to break these guys and this video gave me a hint on a way to do it.
Would be lovely if the game has similar free gameplay to Nethack and other roguelikes, where game lets you try silliest things and sometimes they just work.

Too often games restrict player to not try to do stupid things or just do not react to them.

Well, that just came out of nowhere huh? Not sure if I like that the dialogue options are vocalized before I choose one, but damn if I'm not hyped as fuck for tomorrow.
Out of nowhere? Not really. We were expecting the IGN preview. Get with the program Geist! Also, we have a thread about the upcoming SQ42 presentation here.

QA is currently testing Star Citizen Alpha 3.0.0-694913. Should this testing go well we will deploy this build to the PTU Environment later tonight https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/4/thread/ptu-build-status

Also... we will also be opening tonight's build to all backers should this pass QA. This will be a very late publish (at least three hours from the time of this update) so we will keep you apprised.

Well, everyone can join in on the inconsistency soon.

All right, updated the OP.

It's nice that they opened it up on PTU first (instead of going to live) since people have access to extra ships there.

Letting all of the backers into the PTU out of the blue when servers can barely handle 50 concurrent players is interesting. I wonder if people will have trouble actually finding a server with open spots?

Are you trying to login to the ptu delta patcher? if so that has a different password than your normal account. it's in the email they sent you once you move your credentials to ptu

Yeah I got in eventually. Took a lot of shifting back and forth between the launcher, ptu site and password resets. Think it may have been under heavy load

So the PTU Delta patcher does a completely separate install of the game compared to the "Normal" patcher for some reason.

So once it goes to the normal PU, is it going to update this separate install, replace the normal install or make another new install?

I don't have room for 2 versions of this game on my SSD so one has to go.

You should delete the 2.6 live build anyway, there's no reason to go back. Once it goes live, yeah it'll probably need the separate install.

The reason is that packaging file structure is completely different now. It is entirely incompatible with the old cryengine method.

Though it should be noted that even in the old patcher ptu and live were two completely separate installs/directories.

Star Citizen Alpha 3.0.0 will be released to the Live servers tomorrow December 23rd.

Apart from the improvements already made, there's still a lot of work that has to be done to get the performance up to where we want it to be, but this will take a bit more time. Now that the team completed the heavy lifting to get the tech, content and systems for 3.0.0, they can focus on optimizations, feature consolidations, and polish for our first quarterly release.

Please be true, a stability and optimization patch is just what this thing needs after 3.0.

Poor performance explanation:

  • These are a lot of changes, but it still doesn't change the fact that there are some fundamental challenges in game code that the team needs to overcome in the coming months (legacy item and component updates, culling of updates of on client) because they are the main reason of poor performance on the client as currently seen in PTU.
  • For 3.0, the team will continue to look into the major performance offenders on the client with a lot of people on the server. One issue is with animation updates of attachments, specifically doors. Moreover, we have a big issue with badly spawned ships for interdiction that causes significant but unnecessary physics that delays the execution of the next frame on the main threads (and thus severely impacts frame rate). Moreover, the team's going to build a thread local queue to push physics commands in order to avoid synchronization cost caused by the large amount of physics parameter update calls (in order to ultimately get down to reasonable numbers again). In addition to that, the engineers are trying to reduce the amount of items / entities / components and their updates that contribute to the high baseline cost on the client.
