The VR remake of (selected cases) of LA Noire has been released for a couple of days, and after playing it for a couple of hours, I am surprise at how much they have changed. Its not simply just LA Noire in first person and motion control. They have also streamlined and changed some of the contents to fit it into VR too. So much so that I think this is a showcase title of how to approach remaking a game for VR.

In here I will illustrate some of the changes that they have made, the new additions and how VR remake can provide a new experience to a game that you have already played before.

Here's the first example. On the left, is the scene leading up to the fight. Besides being set in day time rather than night, the clothesline ambush has been removed in the VR version for obvious reason.

On the left is how you fist fight in the game in the remaster. On the right is how you fight in VR (sorry for the mouse cursor). Some of the stuffs only possible in VR is you can do here is leaning back to dodge the punch, slap him, and you can even choose to strike at where you want.

These 2 pictures are from the gunfight segment of Armed and Dangerous case. In VR you get to manually reload and pump your shotgun too. (in the VR gif I used the teleport-run locomotion instead of smooth movement to move to the car). You can couch to hide behind the car or peer over the pillar

The cutscenes are also made into first person view in VR. Rather than being presented in cinematic views with angle cuts, you see everything from Cole Phelps' view.

In another gameplay change, the long chase segment in the Buyer Beware case has been replaced with a fist fight. I haven't completed the game yet, but I wouldn't surprise if there are more of such changes.

It seems Rockstar Games has also been observing what other VR companies has been doing, and has been learning the lessons on making the experience more immersive in VR.

In this gif, you can see how I am able to remove my torchlight off my chest and shine it around or off/on it, something not in the normal version. There's smooth movement, and I can pick up item for a closer look. You can also point at certain object to have your character run to it automatically in 3rd person view, which is essentially the game's version of teleporting.

In LA Noire VR I can pick up many items which are light enough to take with one hand. You can also pick up phones to make phone call, or lean in closer to take a better look at the game environment or the characters.

LA Noire VR allows you to drive the vehicle in this open world with your partner sitting besides you. Lots of vehicle mechanics here: from turning the steering wheel, to winding down window, opening car door, pressing car horn, turning key for ignition, turning on siren etc. If these are too complicated you can simplify it or even skip the entire driving segment.

This VR remake also allows you to free draw to take notes on your notebook any time too.

The avatar representation is the full package too. No floating hands. You can see your entire body and the shadows, and if you have played Batman Arkham VR you will understand how awesome this is. You can check out how you look in every rooms with mirror.

The room in this last gif might be unfamiliar to you, because this is a brand new room exclusive to this VR remake. This Phelp's office serves as a hub where you can interact with bunch of stuffs and select the case which you want to play. There's a record player, typewriter, a cigar, empty gun, and you can change your outfits too etc

These are just those that I have observed, so I have no idea if there are any other examples that I will encounter in the future. For now I believe these are enough to show why I think this title has set the bar on VR remaking a traditional game to bring about new way of playing. There are a lot more other stuffs that developers should look out for when VR remake their game (such as having the scope of sniper rifle displaying zoomed-in view), but they don't apply to this game so I won't talk about them here.

Thanks for the writeup. I've had my eye on this and it is a nice price for a full fledged game in VR. I'll have to get to it once in done with Fallout 4 VR.

I had high expectations for this port and It looks like they've been met.

Rockstar doesn't mess around. They're masters of the tiny details and VR is the perfect platform to show those off.

Ugh, there's got to be one in every VR thread.

If you don't understand how transformative the experience can be, I doubt you've played any VR.

Thanks for the write-up OP. After I finish up Fallout 4 VR I'll look into it.

I also really like games that's are using the shift to third person for comfort moving. From other Suns uses it as well, and I think it's a great option for movement for those who can't handle artificial locomotion as well.

I was waiting for a reason to get a VR headset but I honestly didn't think the reason would be a remake of L.A. noire??
Everything about this just screams fun to me, which is all I really wanted.

I played a good amount of the original L.A Noire - and it never engaged me quite as much as the VR version has. I've been really surprised at how good it is. I first expected this game to be focused around crime scene investigation and figuring out the facial expressions, so it was a surprise to see they've included the driving and action, but not only that - but added a load of extra VR only interactions which add something quite valuable to the overall experience.

It's all surprisingly well done. It can be a bit fiddly when you first start, but overall - I do think this is the best AAA conversion yet.

Thanks for the writeup, that looks like fun. Haven't actually tried VR yet, as much as I'd want to, but this is the first game I've seen that made me wish I could try it right about now. Who'd have thought lol, I know I wouldn't have at least.

WOW this is incredible!

Definitely the typically VR annoyances but it's incredible immersive and the characters look great. Really neat how you can transition from seated to standing while driving. Lots of fun.

Haha, so when you teleport, it sends out your Phelps Stand (your Phelpsona) dashing forward? That's certainly an... interesting way of handling locomotion.
During combat it seems that's your only option since you're essentially just choosing which piece of cover to have your room scale centered at.

But in the normal parts of the game there is the "move your arms to run" style which I really like. It feels cool as hell running around a giant open world.

I don't know what you're referring to in your first sentence.

It's naive to think every single person will change their opinion of VR, not just the experience, but the whole platform by just trying it out. I also know people who played VR games and haven't enjoyed them at all.

The great thing is you have both as an option.
Can't argue with that.

Looks like a really thoughtful conversion. I'll have to play it at some point, but I'll probably be stuck on FO4VR for a few dozen more hours first ;)

Yeah no. I would wager to say that if VR would have been like this back then L.A. Noire would have released like this. Makes the boring game suddenly very good and imersive. I love this version and it's the true version for me of this game. I hope they will release it for PSVR too.

Yeah, this version actually makes me interested in playing LA Noire for the first time.

Just wanted to say thanks for this kickass thread. Hope it comes to PSVR, although that might be stepping on the toes of the remaster (which no-one seems to care about)

The original game was a bloated boring-ass mess. This actually looks good and cutting of the bloated content only makes it better.

It looks visually pretty great from the footage I've seen, there'd definitely have to be some compromises. If there's anyway games like this can succeed though, I feel it needs to be via multi-platform support.

Yeah, I'm all for VR games being as multi-platform as possible so absolutely wouldn't mind it.

I just assumed this would be a rushed, barbones effort, and you completely changed my view. Thanks OP!

I was rather worried it will be a technical mess too due to the silence and the quiet delay, but surprisingly it runs better than Bethesda's VR titles imo. No freeze frame nor tracking issue from my end.

If there's anything bad about this, I think its will have to be the lack of side missions, the NPCs doesn't react to your presence (eg when you touch them), and how the items are not interact-able beyond being able to take them

Dang. Played some more of this tonight. It's super cool, but definitely a bit clunky. It took me more than a few attempts to trigger dialogue sequences, etc.

I bet it would be better with hand controllers, the Vive wands are stretched to the max here. Driving is super cool and just generally exploring the world has a really incredible feel and sense of scale to it. Overall the production quality is very high, but the characters and animation do look dated.

It does feel like a bit of a leap. Cool to say. You gotta wonder about GTA Online after playing it.

Sure, the game has flaws, but I feel that Rockstar Games has set the bar high for not just facial animations in VR games but in AAA games as a whole and I hope that whatever AAA developer/publisher decides to bring their IPs into VR carefully examines this game.

To refer to L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files simply as a VR port does it a disservice. In many ways, the game feels like a fresh experience with its new first-person perspective coupled with interactive environments. Despite its truncated length, you get the sense that Rockstar put a lot of work into The VR Case Files. It certainly has flaws, but raises the bar for what a good VR port should look like.

Another example. In this case you can an example of a change in the form of key item. In the original, the divorce paper is kept in an envelope, but in the VR remake, its a double folded divorce paper, no envelope

Man this thread is so painful to a fan of Rockstar since GTA2. The fact we might not get something like this again, because of their online focus sucks.

I ended up grabbing it even tho there was no sale, breaking my most sacred rule.

No regrets.

I've only played the first hour or so, but I've played it with a few different people and they all loved it.
The driving is surprisingly immersive, sitting in a chair and driving around corners fast feels kind of freaky, and the idea that you can drive anywhere in LA is really cool
