"Injuries and casualties" have been reported after a train derailed in Dupont Monday morning, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office.

Pierce County Sheriff's Detective Ed Troyer says there are fatalities.

"There are fatalities and major injuries," Troyer told KIRO Radio.

The Seattle Times reports at least three people are dead.

I thought injuries and casualties were the same thing? Thought casualties meant someone was injured and fatalities someone was killed. Btw that picture is very scary. Terrible situation.

Absolutely awful. A week away from Christmas too. :( Hope losses are minimal but this doesn't look good.

Weird, I'm not as familiar with passenger rail but typically on bridges trains have an inner set of guard rails to protect against cars from going over the side in the case of derailment. It's also strange to derail on tangent track rather than a curve.

Rip the victims though, any time is a crappy time for a tragedy but right before Christmas =(

Horrific news for all involved. First responders and their jobs make me realize they're made of far stronger stuff than I can comprehend.

I think about this happening a lot when I travel between Chicago and Louisiana on train all of the time.

Oh no. That looks real bad. I hope it's not as bad as it looks.

edit - damn, just saw the 'multiple casualties' headline from AP. I've always been under the impression that trains were the safest way to travel. They probably still are since horrific accidents like this are so rare.

They aren't the same in the US. Anyone that tells you they are...is wrong.

Injuries = People that haven't died. Includes all the way up to people in ICU.

Casualties = Died

How can a train fail on its first time through on new tracks? I'm sure we'll learn a lot in the coming hours/days/weeks/months, but that seems like a potential case of failed design/quality control.

Amtrak used to use a path along the water and Puget sound. That train trestle was used for BUrlington Northern freight trains..

I-5 rush hour traffic that road is packed

Not that any time is a good time, but this is just the worst time of the season to have this happen.

Best wishes and thoughts to all of those affected by this.

Mayor Don Anderson said grade separations – such as overpasses – should be included to keep trains away from cars and pedestrians.

"Come back when there is that accident, and try to justify not putting in those safety enhancements, or you can go back now and advocate for the money to do it, because this project was never needed and endangers our citizens," Anderson said.

^Pretty chilling statement by the mayor

The mayor of one of the nearby towns predicted this outcome when they changed the routes but didn't put in safety measures.

The mayor of one of the towns through which the rerouted trains travel warned earlier this month that the high-speed trains were dangerously close to cars and pedestrians.

"Come back when there is that accident, and try to justify not putting in those safety enhancements, or you can go back now and advocate for the money to do it, because this project was never needed and endangers our citizens," Lakewood Mayor Don Anderson told transportation officials in early December, according to Seattle's KOMO News.
