Dori is absolute, deplorable trash to anyone not acquainted. A complete idiot who makes worthless, vapid, unfounded "both sides" arguments about literally everything. It's a crime that he's still on the radio. Been subjected to his unique brand of know-nothingism since I was a kid.

Had no idea about the host, what trash. Have lots of friends/family in the area and was trying to get some good info.

TV station reports are totally taking the Lakewood mayor's statement out of context and making it seem like he predicted this specific crash would happen.

The Lakewood mayor did sue in 2013 to stop this from happening though, even though his reason wasn't the same. So he still gets credit for having safety concerns that apparently no one else did.

It kind of looks that way. So awful. They are speaking now to automatic controls to slow trains, or rather the lack thereof and the delay in upgrading systems to include it.

I remember after the Amtrak derailed near Philly a couple years ago (or was that 2016?) they were talking about these automatic speed controls. If I remember correctly the deadline to implement them kept getting pushed back.

They are blaming Antifa due to the raid on an Antifa headquarters just recently.

Theyve supposedly been erecting structures or pouring cement on train lines to protest fracking.
I dunno.

"Police have raided an Antifa encampment in Olympia, Washington, following a train being sabotaged by anti-fracking activists — but the anarchists claiming credit for the act have vowed to continue until "every officer is down.

The train was reportedly shorted using jumper cables, causing the train to stop.

Since November 17, dozens of anarchists have been camping on the tracks to prevent trains from transporting fracking supplies from the Port of Olympia — however, railroad companies have stated that there were no such shipments scheduled.

On Wednesday, Union Pacific Railroad officers were met by 20 to 30 masked protesters as they cleared out the encampment and swept it for bombs. Four of the people who were camping on the tracks refused to leave and were subsequently arrested, as were eight others on suspicion of obstructing a law enforcement officer."

Is this from a Fox source?

Horrible. I had seen a quick headline about this earlier, but it didn't mention that the train was literally hanging off on I-5!

This is a nightmare scenario. My thoughts are with everyone involved.

Accidents on aging rail lines I can understand because of lack of infrastructure investment, but the first run of a brand new high speed rail line? What is going on? Why can Japan have such a good safety record with trains and America not? Is it a culture issue in the rail industry? Lowest-bidder contracts leading to shoddy work? Or simply not enough oversight for pure negligence? All of the above?

Has anyone else heard of this or confirmed it?

This was the first day for the Amtrak Cascades high-speed train on its new route with trains further inland parallel to Interstate 5 through Tacoma, Lakewood, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Transitdocs.com, a website that maps Amtrak train locations and speeds using data from the railroad's train tracker app, says Train 501 was going 81.1 mph moments before the derailment Monday. Witnesses said the train was traveling a similar speed when it derailed.

Signs posted near derailment said the speed limit is 30 miles per hour on that portion of the track.

This would be insane if true.

Well the curve right before the bridge has a 30mph speed limit.

https://www.seattletimes.com/seattl...iled-in-washington-has-speed-limit-of-30-mph/

So if the train was doing 80 around that then that's most likely why it derailed.

You mean fascist twitter-twatters made up shit out of whole cloth in a ham-fisted attempt to smear their ideological adversaries? Un-fucking-possible

How fucking stupid is your conspiracy theory that something derailed the train when there are pictures of the engine still on the fucking tracks!?

I refuse to believe these fucking morons can work a door, let alone a damned web browser

If that is true the engineer needs to serve jail time for getting people killed due to reckless speeds.

As someone who takes a commuter train every day, that is terrifying. Especially because these infrastructure departments and orgs have no money and are aging.

After reading how they have a huge track-record of train derailments, why are they still allowed to build/operate trains? O_o Why is there not a huge investigation into that.

I... what? Did you quote wrong post? I'm so confused by your post.

Train was total of 14 units, 2 engines (1 / end) and 12 passenger cars. Another engine ended down on I-5 and was engine pulling the train, train was heading towards bridge. Only thing that remained on tracks was 2nd engine.

I wasn't directing my screed to you. Just apoplectic that known liars are free to use Twitter to pass obvious bullshit off as some sort of Antifa conspiracy. Pardon my wildness. Thanks for the additional info, though

UK ITV News mentioned 1 passenger car was too dangerous to enter but they expected no survivors (presumably no noises from it)

Just heard from a buddy who was a first responder on the scene. Sounds pretty horrific.

I'm sure. Seems to be a few confirmations that all trains have been checked and no one remains on either them or the vehicles below. So three deaths and several critically wounded so that number could rise... around 100 passengers at last count had been taken to local area hospitals.

Hmm if it derailed because it was going too fast from the bottom towards the top left, wouldn't it have derailed on the opposite side of the bridge?
A lot of mass and lower center of gravity in the engine. These talgo carriages on this train actually swing outward from the top and are significantly lighter. So it makes sense that they are more susceptible to derailing, pulling off the cars behind.

Edit: the way that last engine landed is amazing.

RIP to all involved :(

I'm outside the US so "Amtrak" is basically synonymous with "derail" to me. I realize that's a bit unfair since that's the only reason the name would hit international news, but that's my unconsious word association.

Not far off. Airlines and bus companies would be closed for Amtrak's levels of negligence over the years, but it is politically protected by Dems and Repubs.

I don't live in the US anymore, but if I did I would never ever set foot on an Amtrak train again.
When I was a kid, I traveled on an Amtrak train with my mother (I can't remember the exact line but someone between Alabama and Tennessee I believe- I was like 7) and about halfway through the trip
the entire train jostled for a bit and then came to an abrupt stop. It wasn't bad at all but definitely surprised all the passengers.

I decided I was going to run to the front and see if I could find out what happened from the conductor or whatever.

Turns out we had plowed completely through a double wide mobile home that had been stuck on the tracks at a crossing.
Could have easily been a worse scenario I guess as it ended up just delaying us for several hours as they cleared the tracks, but it shook me even as a kid.

You got yourself a source on any of this?

Local evening news saying 12 still in the hospital. Seems incredibly lucky if that low number holds and nobody else succumbs to their injuries.
