RBR did Gasly dirty on this one if they were out there saying his seat was safe for the remainder of the season. I wonder if something happened behind the scenes that would have triggered this.
I believe the last race made them turn around their original decision to keep Gasly until the end of the season. Getting lapped again and almost one second off the pace in qualifying was simply too much. On top of that, Horner appeared very disappointed after the race not getting the win, and believed that with another competing car would not have allowed Hamilton to make this free pitstop which eventually gave him the win. Also the lack of performance from Gasly very much hurts the constructors championship (as said by Horner, source).

Marko's post race Hungary interview to the Dutch said it all, from he was staying to let's wait and see what happens when some interviewer asked him if Gasly would get a phone call during the summer break.

A year too late but they're doing what I said this time last season in the 2018 thread:

Dr. Marko needs to swap the drivers for the rest of the season. Gasly needs to show he's got the speed in a top car on a consistent basis and can push Verstappen. Red Bull Honda can't be going into next season with a one driver team like Toro Rosso and McLaren this year.

Pierre was given time to analyse his first season half and come up with a solution to better it. Maybe he has run out of idea's in order to get better results. Maybe it's more humane not to let him sit in this mess, let somebody else try and regroup in a safe place.

Albon is one of my favourites on the grid so happy for him, hope he kills it at RBR. I hope Russell gets a better seat for next year, Lando is doing great at Mclaren, i'm sure Albon will do at Red Bull too, and I know Russell would be up there too if he had a better drive.

Red Bull is like Nintendo saying they have no new HW to announce, lol.

This gave me a good chuckle!

All the best of luck to Albon — I really like the chap, and he has shown small but gradual improvement since the season opener in Melbourne, and shows maturity beyond his years on his debut season.

I am currently pondering who's banging their head on the wall more; Gasly or Kvyat?

Argh, the 1st of September seems so far away...

It's the 30th anniversary of the French gameshow Fort Boyard this year; as an avowed gameshow fan, I've been pondering making a thread for it in the line of the old Genius thread; particularly 'cause the French version is so much better than the versions seen in the UK and US. It's a game where a team of French celebrities plays physical, mental and fear-conquering challenges to win money for a chosen charity.

I'm posting that here, because tonight's episode has Romain Grosjean captaining the team playing the game, so if you're interested in seeing an F1 person out of their comfort zone, it's worth catching. 7PM UTC if you watch it live.

If you've got a friendly VPN, https://www.france.tv/france-2/direct.html will have it; if not, full episodes are uploaded to their Youtube site the following day and don't appear to have any geoblocks; here's last week's episode:

Note that it's a long programme - over two hours. Behind the spoiler, a lengthy rundown of the format to give you some context (and possibly to act as a framework if I do make a full thread!)

A team goes through a number of games in various phases to try to steal some of Pere Fouras's treasure from the Treasure Room of the fort.
I love that show. Watched it growing up in Europe. I had no idea it's on Youtube. Are old old episodes on there?

Gasly 100%. Like Kvyat just became a father, I think he's fine where he is now. Less pressure at STR, he's pulling in good results. And if Albon doesn't perform to the standards RBR expects he's still in contention for next year. And otherwise he at the very least secured his seat for next year at STR.

If you didn't see it, make sure to watch the non-championship reverse grid race from Assen. I think it's on Youtube, and it was easily the most entertaining race of the season.

That was the one of the two W-series races I have seen to date. Heck, I have even tried to find torrents of W-series in vain. The only two aforementioned races are on YT and FB respectively.

I honestly feel like that series needs to take off. These race car drivers fight tooth, hair and nail for 30 mins + 1 lap and (Personal bias) there is also a Canadian driver among them (who IIRC needs to qualify for her seat next year) who won in the race you mentioned.

I'd imagine they're going to benchmark Albon this second half. It's not like they're leaving points on the table by getting rid of Gasly.

Hey all, longtime lurker (in general) and new to Formula One (like cognizant).

Am I the only one that wants Russell to hang out at Williams for another year or two? I've got no love for Williams, but if Russell can get them a point or two and start helping out the team I think that'd be more exciting than having a team be consistently last.

Also, sucks to be Gasly right now.

Lmao TR is gonna be the saddest team now.

Feel bad for Kvyat, I don't entirely get the logic of fast-tracking another super young guy right to the top again, but I guess they've got the data.

They don't know squat. It's a coinflip, hoping it will translate to second coming of Verstappen. If Albon was that highly rated, they would have put him in the top car before the season began.

I don't expect Albon to remain there next year. I honestly would have tried to poach Lando Norris or Sainz from Mclaren.

But yea, something had to be done. Gasly has cost them dearly. They are in a fight for 2nd in the championship and you cannot have a car like that be wasted.

Shit you might need to poach one of them just to replace Verstappen.

Man this is way too soon for Albon. Isn't Kvyat ahead of him this year?

Feels like it's just a matter of pride in not promoting Kvyat for now.

And I don't know why there were ever people defending Gasly. He was so atrociously bad to a level we haven't seen in the top teams for.. well I don't even remember. Maybe since Badoer stepped in Massa's Ferrari lol.

Who says Kvyat is staying with Red Bull for 2020? His manager was spotted in Hungary with Haas. If he's on the move putting Albon in to test the waters is the only logical choice, if he flops they can get
Alonso
signed for 2020.

Gastly reminded me of 2018 Bottas. Simply horrible.

Bottas' 2018 campaign is one of the worst in F1 history when you factor in that his team won WDC and WCC.

I am frankly surprised by switching of Gasly with Albon mid-season after all the talk of support from the team that team principle talked about.

Someone correct me if I am mistaken but the RBR's car is designed first and foremost around what suited Max and consequently adapting to someone else's style was the issue for Gasly (iirc from the commentary about his shortcomings). To that end, what are the odds that Albon will do any better than Gasly should his driving style be at odds with the car?

Russell deserves a much better seat in F1 than Williams.

Given he came through the ranks in Mercedes, there is a good chance that he may eventually end up there.

That's what it is, simply pride. Kvyat is far more experienced and clearly the better and faster driver than albon. Albon ofcourse has immense talent but this is too soon for albon, same thing that happened to gasly could happen to him. Marko seems incapable of swallowing his pride and promoting Kvyat.

I think it's between him and Ocon.

Ah, I completely forgot about him.

I've seen this and Red Bull's driver program mentioned. Are they F2 teams? I watched the Silverstone F2 race last night, but none of the teams seems to be affiliated with an F1 team.

Apologies but I only follow F1 with a bit of FE and now W-series. I have no idea about F2 (or F3) other than them being buttons on my keyboard.

Almost every F2 and F3 team is affiliated with an F1 young driver programme or two. The programmes themselves are not strictly affiliated with any one team in the lower series though.

Motorsport is all very incestuous. Everything is run by the son or brother or whatever of someone else.

Specific drivers. Not teams. Though some f2 teams have more connections than others (like DAMS and Renault). The racing suits are the most visible place to notice a drivers affiliation.

Well, called that shit. As soon as Marko was like, "Gasly is staying" I knew that shit meant nothing. He has been far too slow. They can't just piss away constructors points like that. Hopefully Albon can do better.

Interesting. I've got a lot of research to do lol

If Danny Ric were still at Red Bull, Max would've won Hungary.
Sucks that gamble backfired on him so much. He shouldn't be struggling to be in the top ten every race.

A team goes through a number of games in various phases to try to steal some of Pere Fouras's treasure from the Treasure Room of the fort.

There's a large number of characters, although not all appear in each episode:

BfpIqeH.png

Olivier Minne: The show's host, accompanies the team, talks through game rules.

65NBo8u.png

Pere Fouras: Isn't exactly played as a villain, more as a mischevious game master-y type. Rarely meets the players directly, but will often communicate with them for riddle challenges.

6G3k7KW.png

Passe-Partout: Accompanies the team, keeps score.
Passe-Muraille: Acts as go-between between Pere Fouras and the team, passing on instructions about the next game. Likes dressing up.

jJrUGrE.png

Felindra: Trains the tigers that guard the treasure room.

VFscS4U.png

The Family Boo: Mister Boo and Lady Boo participate in games where the team needs a specific opposition. Mister Boo also acts as jailer

ufvJDJY.png

Patrice Laffont: The original host of the show, brought back for the thirtieth anniversary for a 'time machine' game featuring classic tests from the show's past.

iDvgyju.png

Magik: The fort's genie, hosts a game based around fakir trials.

EuZTsKd.png

MegaGaf (No, not that Gaf!): Played by Vincent LaGaf (you see?); a superhero convinced that Pere Fouras is a supervillain, constantly trying to assault the fort.

mdvpzmQ.png

Rouge: Sister to Blanche, she trains combatants to test the teams
The Children of the Fort: Rouge's champions, children skilled in martial arts and gymnastics.

yyF5ad4.png

Blanche: Sister to Rouge, she sits in judgement

I9VLurG.png

Chef Willy Rovelli: The Fort's chef. Not a particularly good cook.

wDwRp22.png

The Masters of Time: Pere Fouras's head lieutenants, who play small-scale duels with the contestants.

There's a lot of phases:

1: Quest for Keys
The team has 50 minutes to collect nine keys from various games around the fort. This is rarely achieved, but the more they get, the better later on. The games are short timed challenges, explained immediately beforehand, you can generally deduce what's going on. Any player who runs out of time in a challenge room will be imprisoned; Mister Boo will take them to the Fort's cell. Some challenges are played by teams of two. Outdoor challenges are often accompanied by a cluebox; rather than having to retrieve a physical key they're trying to get to a point where they can read a four-digit code, allowing the team to open the box and retrieve the key. At least one challenge is generally a riddle where Pere Fouras tasks the contestants with answering while dealing with... distractions. At some point in proceedings Rouge will issue a challenge to the players, at which point time stops briefly while they proceed to the Cage.

1b: The Cage
An opportunity to win up to three keys in one-on-one challenges against Rouge's champions. These challenges tend to be physical or gymnastic in nature.

2: Judgement
After the fifty minutes are up, the team proceeds to the entrance to the Chamber of Judgement. They have to pick one player to sacrifice to Blanche for each key they're short of the nine required. Each player goes into the chamber and is invited to pick either a chance or skill game to free themselves; skill games give you three distinct chances to complete a ball-based task, chance games invite you to pick a 50/50 outcome from a random event. Failing results in those players being taken to the cells; success returns them to the group. Also at this point any player imprisoned in the first part is also brought before Blanche for judgement, and the same criteria takes place; winning a task releases the player, failing sends them back to the cell.
This season this phase concludes with a final test; a member is invited to sacrifice themselves to... something, they don't quite know what, but "fortune favours the brave"...

Interlude: Chamber of Adventures / Willymix
Now the game gets a bit more serious, we move on to the Adventures. The team is shown the schedule of adventures for this week, and has a brief discussion about which they'd like to avoid... generally all of them, because the Adventures are largely fear-based challenges. They have an opportunity to win a joker to allow one player to pass on an adventure to be replaced by another if the person sacrificed earlier beats Willymix, where the game gets a wee bit Nickelodeon as Chef Willy places the contestant in his automated cooking device (i.e. elaborate gunge tank) and gives them an eight-question quiz on the history of the show. Four correct answers wins the joker, incorrect answers mean... well, you know.

3: Quest for Clues
The team have keys to the treasure room, but they need the password to release the treasure, and so they're invited to play fear-based challenges to get capsules containing clue words. Six such challenges, usually with at least one height-based challenge and at least one trip to Chez Willy, where Chef Willy invites the team - together - to enjoy one of his fine meals. If the team won a joker earlier they can choose to replace the contestant lined up for the current challenge, but can't choose who to replace them with...
In the rare event that the team managed to secure all nine keys in the time limit in the Quest for Keys, they get one extra Adventure here for a chance of a bonus clue word.

4. Quest for Time
Now the players have a number of clue words, and so the final thing they're playing for is the amount of time the treasure room gate remains open. They start with 3:00, but this can change!

4a: The Great Escape
If any player is still imprisoned at this point, they have 2:30 to escape the cell; there's a small escape room portion in the cell itself, then a course to complete, ending up in a trapdoor directly under the team's feet. When the escapee pulls the lever next to the team, the time stopped. Any time they took beyond 2:30 is deducted from their treasure room time.

4b: The Council
Pere Fouras calls the Masters of Time to host the council; the one time he directly meets the players. He calls four players from the team in one-at-a-time to play duels against the Masters, generally very simple games (often with an elaborate staging - a shaky-hand game across the body of a giant dragon which spits sparks if you hit the side, for instance!). Each duel won awards +15 seconds to the team

5: The Treasure Room
The final segment. The team insert their nine keys, and get ready with the clue containers. When Olivier starts the clock, the treasure room gate opens, and they can start opening the clues. If they feel they need more clues, they can sacrifice a player to get an extra one. When they have it, they spell out the word on the floor of the Treasure Room, and if they're correct, the coins are released! In whatever time they have remaining they gather what coins they can and carry them out to the bucket; after the time is up the contents are placed on a scale and weighed, and that's the prize money going to their charity.

Sometimes: Toujours plus Fort!
This season - for the anniversary - they're quite frequently having a lengthy post-game chat with the contestants, interspersed with a few extra challenges for bonus money and segments on the history of the show. It's not on every week.

Phew. That should be enough grounding to understand the basics. It's a fun watch, but it's not in any way succinct!

Oh wow... Fort Boyard used to be a HUGE thing here in Québec back in the late 90s... I had no idea it was still going in France to this day...

This reminds me, there was a clip show recently with a few Québec actors talking about their career and stuff and they showed a clip of one of them back when he participated in the show 20 years ago and you saw him answer Père Fouras' riddles. The guy explained that he and Père Fouras had spent the night prior drinking for hours and they were both super hungover while filiming the episode haha.

Yet none of the two young Renault drivers in F2 are driving for DAMS (Hubert at Arden and Zhou at UNI-Virtuosi), even Aitken drove for ART.

It wouldn't surprise me if Hubert moves up at a better team next year though, DAMS could be a candidate if Latifi wins and/or moves up to Williams, Sette Camara could also drive for a 4th team in 4 years.

A lot of the F2 teams have strong ties with F1 team academies through sponsorships. Like UNI-Virtuosi currently features a Renault academy driver, Prema's F2 and F3 teams are testbeds for Ferrari academy drivers (like Charles Leclerc and Mick Schumacher), then you have Charouz which is literally the junior team of Sauber now.

41 years ago , this day Enzo Ferrari passed away. Just 1 year after the launch of the legendary Ferrari F 40.

If he could see the shitshow that is Ferrari now. They can't even release good road cars. The new SF 90 Stradale is one of the worst car ever made. Of course the ( inevitable ) SUV will be new benchmark for these incompents frauds.

This is not suprising considering that Louis Camilleri is the Philip Morris CEO ( he doesn't know shit about cars ) and the President is John "The Idiot" Elkann. Even Don Mattrick would do a better job.
