"Trousers of an order of fallen knights.

Held beneath leather boots and drab cloth using a knot of rope and bandage, they are dampened and indelibly stained with the misery of flight."
This description still makes me laugh. Probably the most eloquent way of saying "The original owner wet themself" ever written xD

The thought of all the cool kids overlooking this and running around in their hoods and piss-stained pants is amazing.

I was thinking about taking the Fire Gem! But then I found out that wasn't the item that can set your sword on fire. Which one is that by the way?

Charcoal Pine Resin or Bundle can set them on fire. Resin adds less damage for a longer time, Bundle does more for less time, if I remember correctly.

I figured out that great hammers (I use the Dragon Tooth) are excellent for killing crystal lizards. The running attack and strong attack are both overhead smashing blows, which always connect. Was getting so tired of whiffing attacks with my spears/swords/katanas/axes.
Haha yes they are the best. The malformed shell is made for this. Hunt them all down and then burn a bonfire aesthetic and do it again.

I defeated Laurence (The Old Hunters) three hours ago and I'm still shaking, it was so hard that I thought I was going to puke at some point. I will never forget this battle as long as I live (this is my first soulslike and I'm loving it, what a game!).

Interesting, after Orphan of Kos and Ludwig, Laurence was practically friendly for me.
If I have to rank the difficulty level of these battles on a scale from zero to ten, i would give an 8 to Ludwig, a 9 to the OoK and a 10 to Laurence. Ludwig can basically one shot you, but at least he leaves a lot of openings for your attacks. OoK is insanely fast and strong but once you memorize his moveset, it isn't impossible to parry/dodge his attacks and, in the end, you can afford to make some mistakes during the fight. Against Laurence, during the third phase, you have to be perfect; the time frames to safely hit him are so short that it's almost impossible attacking him without being heavily injured. It took me two hours to defeat him, it was a nightmare.

I had that feeling when I first battled Jay and Silent Bob in Dark Souls 1 for the first time, I died and died and died and when I finally beat them was like the happiest moment of my life.

Any good blind DS1 playthroughs out there? I'm looking for someone who's playing the game while taking it seriously, in in the sense that it isn't someone cracking jokes all the time

You might like Kay's? I haven't watched it (not a fan of just watching LPs) but people seem to like it.

Another vote for Kay's playthrough that Morrigan linked to above. It's slow to start with as DS1 was her first Souls game, but in no time she's parrying the Silver Knights dragonslayer arrows and working out a lot of the lore just by exploring and extrapolating. :)

Took out the Crystal Sage boss in DS3 fairly easily. I feel like there are a lot of items still laying around the area I need to go get. This place just sucks ass though. I hear the next one isn't much better.

Depends on which area you go to first. One is one of the best levels in the game. The other is, well, the exact opposite.

DS2 progress: Started off with the Crown of the Sunken King DLC. Made my way through Shulva - Sanctum City, Dragon's Sanctum (I felt so betrayed when Jester Thomas invaded me; wtf bro you and me took down Mytha together), Dragon's Rest, and stopped at Cave of the Dead.

Elana, the Squalid Queen was probably my least favorite boss fight in the game so far. Holy fuck she was so annoying. The worst thing is that the difficulty varies wildly based on RNG - sometimes she summons a group of harmless pigs, sometimes she summons a group of easily dispatched skeletons, and then sometimes she summons fucking Velstadt to wreck your shit.

And then right afterward there's Sinh, the Slumbering Dragon, which was the most epic boss fight so far in the game. First of all, DAT MUSIC:

And second of all, you're fighting a badass fucking dragon, who flies around spitting poisonous fire, crashing through stone pillars as he hurls himself at you with his deadly lunge attacks. Hell yeah, that's what a goddamn boss fight is supposed to be like. It wasn't perfect though - the hitboxes for some of his ground attacks were pretty bullshit. But still, that one set the bar for DS2 bosses.

You should change that, the dlcs are all great.
Just skip the coop areas in DS2, they are literally the worst levels in the series.

DLCs are basically the best areas in all Soulsborne games (well, in 3 it's more close, I think the Cathedral in vanilla is still the best area).

Great as far as story/lore, gameplay, or both?
I have yet to even watch any gameplay.
If you mean the DSII DLCs, they're all great- they just each have a co-op focused "challenge zone" so to speak, and those are shit and not worthwhile in the slightest. But otherwise, the DLCs are thematically cohesive, atmospheric, unique, and well-designed.

I made some more progress in Bloodborne. Cleared through the cathedral and completed a Chalice dungeon. Totally didn't realize how to put 2nd and 3rd gems or whatever they are into weapons. That upped my damage a lot and I've been cruising since. Made it through the first Frontier area and was pretty sure a boss was coming (I was right) and backed away before calling it.

Game is definitely pretty damn good, but early on it's really rough. As you start leveling and doing much more damage it gets a lot more manageable, but Clerics Beast was a real challenge and some of the areas are a nightmare to navigate--hey, drop down this tower in the dark onto tiny beams, doesn't that sound fun???

Once I figured out parrying into visceral attacks a lot of enemies got way easier. I also keep walking right past ladders because certain areas are so dark lol. Hoping to have some more time to play in the coming week but so far I'm liking it minus some bullshit here and there.

Have you fought Vicar Amelia? If so..
The cutscene after killing her when you approach the altar, gives you the clue to go back to the locked door where you are asked for a password - now you have the password. :)

I did. Beat her before heading through to the Witches. I completely forgot about that area. I'll head there next time I play.

DS2 progress: Completed the Crown of the Sunken King DLC. I gotta say, the end was very underwhelming. First, the final "boss" fight is literally just a 3-man NPC gank squad attacking you. (At least DS3 prepared me for that.) So you defeat them and then... that's it. There isn't even a bonfire to exit at; you just jump down into a hallway that has a chest, but now you're in the middle of the map and you have to either use a Homeward Bone or make a risky jump off a ledge and run to the nearest bonfire. What kind of level design is that? Overall I would have been upset if I had bought this DLC for $10 when it was released. Elana the Squalid Queen was annoying and the gank squad was just lame. Sinh the Slumbering Dragon was by far the high point, but one awesome boss fight and some cool scenery is not worth $10.

Now I'm doing the Crown of the Old Iron King DLC. The enemies are actually easier here than the ones in the Sunken City, because they have less poise so I can stagger lock them with my trusty Grand Lance. The hollows holding explosive barrels are quite possibly the funniest enemies in the game; hitting one of them with a fire arrow/firebomb and setting off a chain reaction is never not hilarious.

The graverobber squad isn't really the final boss of the DLC, but is more of an optional challenge. It's meant, I believe, to be tackled using co-op, but it of course is doable in single player too. Every DLC has one such area.

Yeah, the real "final" boss of the DLC is Sinh. Each DLC has 3 bosses, 1 of which is part of an optional coop-oriented area. All these areas can be done solo regardless but are designed with coop in mind. They are moderately fun in coop, but really a chore and annoying as fuck to solo, each and every one of them (the Shulva one is actually the least painful of the 3), and the boss at the end kind of sucks/is a rehash of some kind. The best one of those bosses is in the 3rd DLC because it's quite the challenge (it's absolutely brutal to solo) and it's fun to coop.

The biggest think those cut dialogues from BB show is that FROM is pretty good in understanding these games should have succint dialogue.

Btw I really want to replay BB but my TV is broken and the only other in the house has awful input lag, aaand my DS4 started to go the shit with some dpad buttons not responding. I think I'll look up some screenshots I took at very least.

I beat Rom. And now I'm getting absolutely wrecked in Yahargul...

So I started my Dark Souls trilogy playthrough a couple weeks ago. The only game I've beaten previously is Bloodbourne, which I platinum'd. I'm pretty far into the first Dark Souls (just killed Bed of Chaos, heading to Catacombs next) and the most surprising thing to me so far is how easy I've found it. Thanks to my shield, circle strafing and dodging I haven't gotten stuck anywhere yet. I've been rolling with a +15 Heater Shield and it allows me to be a lot lazier than I probably should be. My build and play style is very Bloodbourne-esque and those skills have translated well to this game. I'm still loving it but I'm looking forward to SotFS and going with a totally different build, preferably one that doesn't rely on a shield. If anyone has a recommendation for a fun build in DS2, let me know.

Coming from a BB plat, you get amazing skills for tackling the remainder of the series. I would recommend letting DS2 come naturally, without guide or otherwise. I would say that I had a good time as a hex warrior/rogue build.

DS2 is far, far more suited for dual-wielding than DS1, mostly because you can wield melee weapons in both your right and left hand. Pick the Swordsman class, which gives you two swords. When you have 1.5x the stat requirements of both the weapon you're holding in your left and right hand (only with certain weapon combinations, like shortsword/shortsword or greatsword/katana, although there are many valid combinations), press and hold Y/Triangle to go into a special stance where your LB/LT (or L1/L2) attacks are unique to that weapon combination. This mechanic is exclusive to DS2, and it is called "powerstancing". I don't like DS2 anywhere as much as DS1, and it's especially frustrating to go shieldless in SotFS (due to the amount of "gank squad" encounters), but powerstancing is still an incredible mechanic the game doesn't properly tell you about and one which I discovered 40+ hours into my own run. It's amazing.

DS2's all around pretty great with its build variety (just about its only net positive besides powerstancing over DS1's combat in my eyes) so feel free to experiment, an early-to-midgame weapon I like is the Twinblade, but my favorite build ended up being a greatsword in the left hand and a katana on the right, with powerstancing of course.

Edit: Tagged as spoiler just in case.

Also - Holy shit wow is Fume Knight difficult. His combination of fast and slow attacks are a nightmare to dodge; reminds me of Pontiff. It's an awesome boss fight but I wish it was in DS3 where the movement is so much less clunky. Too many of my deaths in DS2 have been because it takes goddamn forever to move after swinging a weapon.
