Woohoo can't wait! Might only get in 15ish this year due to having our first child but I'll at least get the usuals in on Halloween: Trick R Treat and Hocus Pocus.

Here's my 2019 list. I've gone for a WW2 / Nazi theme this year. I've got 32 films (because I'm starting with a double bill), and I've only seen 3 of them before. Any further suggestions gratefully received. I'm positive there's some real crap on here, but I'm telling myself that'll be half the fun.

The Madmen of Mandoras aka They Saved Hitler's Brain (1963)
Oasis of the Zombies (1982)
Werewolves of the Third Reich (2017)
Horrors of War (2006)
Zombie Lake (1981)
Backtrack (2014)
Living Space (2018)
Soldiers of the Damned (2015)
Bunker of the Dead (2015)
War of the Dead (2011)
Puppet Master - Axis of Evil (2010)
Reichsfuhrer-SS (2015)
She Demons (1958)
Death Ship (1980)
Isla - She Wolf of the SS (1975)
The Frozen Dead (1966)
Crawlspace (1986)
Frankenstein's Army (2013) (rewatch)
Blood Creek (2009)
Outpost (2008)
Outpost 2 - Black Sun (2012)
Outpost 3 - Rise of the Spetsnaz (2013)
Frostbite (2006)
The Bunker (2001)
Shock Waves (1977)
The Keep (1983)
The Devil's Rock (2011) (rewatch)
Hell Hunters (1987)
Below (2002)
Dead Snow (2009) (rewatch)
Dead Snow 2 - Red Vs Dead (2014)
Overlord (2018)

The fact that this genre hasn't spawned a movie called Sieg Hell! seems like a missed opportunity to me. Also, I'm reasonably sure that well over half these films have some form of Nazi zombie in them. What is it with Nazis and zombies?

I always have trouble deciding what order to watch things in, so this year I've arranged my list more or less by ascending IMDB score. It ought to let me power through the real crap early in the month when enthusiasm is high, then keep on going towards the end knowing that quality is (theoretically) improving all the time...

At the weekends I'll be doing double bills where possible, with the second movie having some kind of military connection but from a different time period. Don't really know how many I'll get round to, but here's the list anyway:

Dead Birds (2004)
Trench 11 (2018)
The Girl With All The Gifts (2016)
Burrowers (2008)
Red Sands (2009)
The Objective (2008)
Redcon-1 (2018)
Combat Shock (1984)
Jacob's Ladder (1990)
Deathdream aka Dead of Night (1974)
R Point (2004)
The Guard Post (2008)

Participants Previous Years' Final Lists updated as of this post. Please let me know if I've missed you.

My wife and I just had our first child this month. No way in Hell will I hit 31. Hoping for 5-6, but I'll try to find stuff that's free and listed in the OP.

I'm really looking forward to your reviews and I'm shocked you managed to come up a few that scored even lower than Zombie Lake on IMDb. I'm always looking for more zombie movies and you've got some I haven't seen yet, so hopefully they turn out good.
If you need more suggestions for your different time period selection, there's also Army of Frankensteins that takes place during the civil war and has a whopping 2.7 on IMDb! Plus, you can watch it for free on ShoutFactory's website.

Edit: Oh, and there's also Nazis at the Center of the Earth. I actually kinda enjoyed that one and did it for one of the earlier 31 Days of Horror.

Thanks for this - how did I manage not to spot Nazis at the Center of the Earth? I will definitely try to fit that in, especially as it's on Prime video. Also, I might have to adjust my watch order a little, because there is no way I will now be able to resist an Army of Frankensteins / Frankenstein's Army double bill!

If I wasn't busy covering the London Film Festival I would be so in for this. I might try and watch a horror movie every 2 or 3 days, see how it goes.

Without further adieu...

Some recommendations for 2019! Sorry, not sorry

"Give me something foreign!": Tumbbad doesn't exactly throw out many of the conventions one comes to expect out of Indian cinema, as the song-and-sorta-dance interludes that show up every so often can attest to, now with surgeon general's warnings to act as a kind of watermark whenever someone has a pipe in their mouth (no, really!). With that in mind, one will find a hell of a lot to like about this horror film, one far more ambitious from a narrative standpoint with its sprawling multi-decade tale of greed and ill-gained inheritance, and from a production standpoint (they waited for actual monsoons to film their monsoon-soaked scenes) to deliver a demonic chiller with few easy points of comparison. Nasty and brutal in ways you'd never associate with the country, it also boasts some truly remarkable imagery once we find out just what lies beneath the estate that so many have died for, and for some unlucky few, how long they've lived for as well.
Where to find it: Amazon Prime

"Give me something gay!": I was not the world's greatest fan of Knife+Heart, but it's worth mentioning for some very strong reasons. First, they seldom come more flaming than this one, with its plot centering around the production team and actors of a gay porn studio finding themselves the target of a brutal killer with a hangup or two themselves. What's surprising and rather refreshing is that this is a deep dive into queer culture itself, caught between the dying days of the hedonistic 70s and the enthusiasm of entering the 80s, with the specter of AIDS looming in the distance for those who do manage to survive. Putting the focus almost entirely on gay and lesbian characters gives the film a very nice sense of camaraderie and tragedy even in its most lurid moments (while not a whole hog experience, lets just say that this would have some difficulties securing an R-rating). That it's also a spot-on riff on giallo aesthetics and plotting (well, that second one may not be a big positive for some) is certainly enough to get folks interested, but there is a surprising amount of depth underneath the surface that even if it doesn't satisfy as a purer genre exercise would, it gives you a lot to chew on all the same. And no, that's not a porn joke.
Where to find it: Shudder

"Give me a creature feature!": Crawl is ambitiously unambitious. The tin says it all: a father/daughter/dog trio find themselves trying to survive a hurricane, which has also given the local wildlife free reign on anyone unlucky enough to be on the menu. There's been plenty of killer gator films out there, but they rarely come as slick and entertaining as what Alexandre Aja puts together here with his cast and crew, barrelling through its sub-90 minute run time with authority and plenty of excitement. Sure, it's easy to tell who won't be making it to the final reel throughout, but with the well-paced set pieces, shockingly good CG effects for the budget, the affable chemistry between stars Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper and the fun it has drawing out the tension of whether or not anything bad is going to happen to that dog make this a refreshingly low-key winner in a sub-genre that too often aspires to live and frequently dies by making everything too big. Regular-sized gators are scary enough, and that's something this film knows and pushes to its fullest potential.
Where to find it: Available on VOD starting September 24, on home video starting October 15

"Give me something dramatic!": Chances are that if you watched Hereditary, you'll have a pretty good idea going into Midsommar as to whether or not that you'll vibe with it. A folk horror film that takes place almost entirely in daylight, Ari Aster takes his rather confident approach to interpersonal drama that he displayed with the Graham family and their horrifying loss and shifts it to the combustible frays of a relationship already coasting on fumes. At two-and-a-half hours with deliberate pacing, it's a big ask for folks who like their scares more frequent, but the dramatic elements here are so well canvassed that it's easy to get lost in the character moments as we see our leads struggle to keep something, anything going for a relationship that should have died well before this point of natural causes. Of course, with it being a folk horror film, it won't come as much of a surprise that it is building to something far more sinister than the smiles, singing and dancing initially suggests, but Aster finds new ways of searing into your mind some truly gruesome imagery while still balancing the main thrust of the story in a way that coalesces into an unforgettable extended climax for quite the potent effect. I do hope to get around to watching the director's cut as a matter of compare-and-contrast with what I saw theatrically as a bonus film during the month's festivities, but I am quite confident that for those that like their slow burn horror films, Midsommar is a tough film to beat in that regard.
Where to find it: Available on VOD starting September 24, on home video starting October 8

"Give me something original!": Why would I suggest a remake then, you will ask. After all, how could there be anything original in a remake of Suspiria? Yet somehow, through sheer artistic drive and a passion to be as faithless to the original film as humanly possible, Luca Guadagnino confidently answered that question by making a Suspiria just as distinct and deeply memorable as its source material without having to evoke it for the sake of a cheap pop. The general setup of the story and the names of the characters are all that remain of this radical departure: one part feminist statement, one part exploration into how troubled times can allow for more sinister powers to achieve their peak effectiveness, one part riveting behind-the-scenes dance documentary that walks the walk, one part brutal body horror that would impress even the likes of Cronenberg, and... well, you'll have to watch the film yourself to see the bold and exciting direction its story takes by the end. Another recent horror film epic for its run time alone, I cannot guarantee that everyone is going to vibe with this version as much as I did, which I loved dearly enough for it to reach number 4 on my top 10 list for all of 2018, but it cannot be denied that it accomplishes the task of being unlike anything else out there, just like Dario Argento did more than 40 years before.
Where to find it: Amazon Prime (1080p)/Amazon Prime (4K)

This year I'm going to do all classic horror. It'll be a mix of Universal Monsters and Hammer. Just not sure which titles. There's quite a few I haven't watched yet, so the new watch ratio will be pretty high. Now I just have to get my list all sorted out.

My fiance and I started watching horror movies in September because we were too excited for this Halloween season. Too bad it's been 90 degrees here still.

I'm not sure we will get to 31 in October but I look forward to seeing everyone's lists. It gives me ideas for things I haven't seen before.

I made ot to 31 a few years ago. This is my last semester at school so I dont think I can swing a movie a night. Plus I think I'd only try it with a Shudder account. Its hard to get 31 decent films I havent seen when Netflix and Amazon have sparse lineups.

But I will be reading the thread for gems.

Real mensches will only watch Shoah, Decalogue, Tie Xi Qu, Dead Souls, Melanchola (2008), Satantango, An Elephant Stands Still, Frost (1997), Hard To Be A God, Utopia (1983) and Marketa Lazorova over the course of a month. Be cool, be hip.

Wow! That's an awesome list! I really should begin building my own list for October too...

Also, can series be included in the 31 days of horror? Because the recent Netflix series Marianne is the best horror series I've ever seen (8 episodes of about 1 hour each). It's also way better than many new horror movies I've seen recently... I can't speak of it highly enough. Mandatory viewing for all horror fans!

I was thinking of trying to fit in Marianne as my 'extra credit' assignment for the month. Does seem to be getting some great reviews.

Ha, yeah, it's been a blast. Hand-to-hand is usually my favorite kind of action, but Hong Kong cinema and especially classic kung-fu/wuxia was a huge blindspot for me. Kind of annoying though since I try to only watch subbed versions, but most of the ones available on streaming are dubbed, so bit of a challenge tracking down some movies.

But back on topic, giallo was also a big genre blindspot for me so pretty excited to watch the genre evolve over the years. Although I'm probably most excited to watch Scarecrows; criminal mercenaries versus scarecrows during a single night on a creepy farm is just ridiculously my kind of movie, and I had never heard of it until a few weeks ago

Went with mostly stuff I have yet to watch from my own collection. Some obscure horror, low budget, "so bad it's good", mixed in with some recommended titles, etc. It's almost popcorn time.

(the one at the top is Bride of Re-animator)

EDIT: Decided to go with Brainscan instead of Graduation Day, and Superstition instead of Mausoleum.

EDIT #2: Due to time constraints I'm removing Shadowbuilder and The Unholy. Already watched Frightmare and Waxwork so adding them instead.

Damn, that's a crazy good list. Out of the Italian stuff (what a selection you've picked!), I think all I haven't seen is The Fifth Cord, The Case of the Scorpion's Tail, Your Vice is a Locked Room and What Have They Done To Your Daughters. They're all in my to watch pile though, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you think. I was actually trying to find time to watch Your Vice as a warmup this week but didn't get to it. You've definitely hit the giallo mother load.

Another incredible selection. Any pile of movies with multiple Frank Henenlotter films is A+ in my book.
And make sure you do Killer Workout and Death Spa as a double feature. Have you seen Murder-Rock: Dancing Death? That would go along great Killer Workout and Death Spa as well.

Cause it's the most wonderful time...OF THE YEARRRRRR.

Hopefully this year I won't be so busy that I have to cram 31 movies into 10 days.

31 Days of Horror 2018 Film Rankings (According to My Scores):

1. Hereditary
2. Spider Baby
3. Cure
4. Halloween (2018)
5. House of Usher (Corman)
6. Curse of the Cat People
7. Kill, Baby Kill
8. Images
9. Annihilation
10. Vampyr
11. The Vampire Lovers
12. The Church
13. MonkeyShines
14. Torso
15. City of the Living Dead
16. Prom Night 2: Hello Mary Lou
17. Someone's Watching Me
18. Dressed to Kill
19. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
20. The Cat O'Nine Tails
21. A Quiet Place
22. The Invisible Man Returns
23. Ghost Stories
24. Happy Death Day
25. Basket Case 2
26. Grizzly
27. Demons 2: Demon Harder
28. Street Trash
29. It
30. Prom Night
31. Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich

Now I've just got to get my pull list ready for this. As always, I've got more than 31 films I want to watch, but only 31 will make it. The rest will get pushed to another year. The goal, with the final version, being variety. I'll probably keep doing the categories that I did last year (a Carpenter film, a Universal Horror, Hammer, something Japanese, Italian, on the Videos Nasty list, etc.)

Looking forward to watching and reading this thread.

There's no way I'm able to watch a movie a day but I definitely love Halloween/this time of year and will look through to see what everyones watching.

Also, I'm not sure if Vudu has anything that some of these other free services don't have but they do have a bunch of horror movies I believe that are free with ads.

And I'll just throw out a few Halloween season/themed movies that don't get much attention/aren't really horror but I enjoy watching them around this time:

I'm in. I've saved myself from watching a lot of horror movies this past summer and spring due to busy schedule. Got a lot to catch up on, this will be great. Will update list, just going to pick random flicks from my watch list and go from there

Unfortunately Girl Who Knew Too Much doesn't seem to be streaming/VOD anywhere, so I'll be starting with Blood & Black Lace. Not that I'm complaining, frees up my list to add Southbound on the end

I'm not even going to pretend to do a theme this year as those end up only accounting for like 25-30% of my total anyway. I've got a list of movies I want to get to, but for the most part I'm just gonna wing it this year. Looking forward to it, as always.

Since it's a movie marathon, TV series are generally considered bonus viewing, not a numbered movie.
But we're not gonna enforce any rules or anything, so no one is going to show up at your house and smack you in the face with a cooked ham if you count a TV series.

Honestly, The Girl Who Knew Too Much is great, but it's not really a horror movie. It's a thriller/mystery. Southbound is probably a better fit anyway.

Somewhere.
Wait, did they seriously take off the Nightmare of Elm Street movies from Shudder already? I just finally made an account with the free 30 days, but now be able to use the in site search function, I can't find them. I thought they recently added them when I saw it back in August, and the pages can still be searched on google.

Well, this blows, and sorta kill the reason I made the mini theme lol. Guess I will look at the library or such then, cause I am still interested.

They're fun, so it's worth going through them, usually for the gimmicks and dream scenarios at least. A few of them are bonafide good movies as well.

Yeah, it was a one month deal with those movies. I have to imagine they were expensive as hell for a service like Shudder to acquire.

If you ever get around to watching the movies, I suggest the Never Sleep Again documentary as well. It's an excellent look into all things regarding the Elm Street series, and the cultural impact of Freddy Kruger.
