I seriously doubt Nintendo would entrust Grezzo with a follow-up to their GOTY. They really don't have the design pedigree to make a game like that. Ports using Nintendo's source code is one thing, a sequel to GOTY sounds unusual. Especially when the series is on track to selling 700k+ in Japan. Nintendo is going to want to push the sequel back into a million sales territory.

Nintendo was just hiring for a new 3D action adventure game. Most likely they are staffing up for BOTW team split into sequel and new IP? Maybe?

That seems hard considering that the core Zelda team is like 100 people.

Going to need a lot of hiring or a lot of outsourcing to Monolith Soft. Hopefully they could pull it off, but this could just be routine hiring to start a new game (whether that be a new IP or BotW 2 instead of both).

Could we get the next 3D Zelda game late 2019?

I think they can potentially pull it off. But it will depend on how the lineup for the year looks from their end, I bet. If hypothetically, 2019 ends up having, say, Metroid Prime 4, Pokemon, 2D Mario, 2D Zelda, and maaaybe Aonuma team's new IP, they might not need it that year and can afford to give it more time.

2020 seems like around the right time they could release a new form of Switch hardware (similar to DSi or New 3DS?) and a new 3D Zelda might be a solid game to time that with. Especially if they want to compete with PS5/Xbox Two. Course, we're talking relatively far off and anything can happen but it's fun to speculate with what we know now.

Aonumas always managed 2.5 teams.

Team 1 - 3D Zelda
- Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi who did Skyward Sword and BOTW.

Team 2 - 2D Zelda
- Director Hiromasa Shikara who did A Link Between Worlds and Triforce Heroes.

Team 3 - Zelda ports
- Supervise outsourced ports of their source code with Grezzo / Tantalus.

That's interesting. There's something like that in other production groups?

2020 is good for Switch Lite or something because 7nm comes out in 2020.

But they could want to release that revision sooner.

"2D Zelda team" is a bit weird sometimes to describe on another note. The 2D Zelda team folded into the main Zelda team after Spirit Tracks to help finish Skyward Sword. After that, they were put on making WiiU stuff to make the WiiU launch less of a disaster (it didn't work, spoilers), before finally working on ALBW for a year and then probably getting absorbed back into the BotW team.

So they've been making 2D Zelda games for like one year out of the last 8 though some helped with Triforce Heroes.

We've seen Nintendo deliver same engine/artstyle sequels in two years (Super Mario 3D World and Splatoon 2 ex). I don't think a BOTW sequel in 2-2.5 years is outlandish by any means.

That's interesting. There's something like that in other production groups?

Yes. Most production groups are at least of 2 teams.

Hisashi Nogami has Splatoon team and Animal Crossing team.
Kouichi Kawamoto has Miitopia team and 1-2 Switch team.
Koichi Hayashida has Super Mario Odyssey and NES Remix team/Flipnote Studio team.
Kosuke Yabuki has Mario Kart 8 Deluxe team and Arms team.
etc.

I disagree. The 2D Zelda team has been separate as the leads have been independent from each other. The main difference is that Daiki Iwamoto joined the 3D team after Spirit Tracks, and Hiromasa Shikata took over on ALBTW and TFH.

* Benefits from a fluid team structure - EPD is very unique from in-house divisions of other game companies. Rather than strict centralized teams, EPD has software groups made up of a few people, then when they begin work on a project, they assemble a team from a pool of staff for development. So one minute, someone could be working under Aonuma for Zelda, the next they could be working with Nogami on Animal Crossing. This was true of EAD as well, at least during the Iwata days, but I feel it especially benefits EPD. This kind of ties in with the the first point, but because the software groups are de-regulated, different staff and developers at EPD can share ideas. And the decentralization also encourages friendly competition between them, challenging them to make the best projects, which can lead to more, better, and different kinds of games for consumers.

Given enough projects to bounce between, this also can keep the ratio of full-timers to contractors favorable (keep a higher percentage of the team on staff) because there's always some team that will need more people instead of having downtime when a project is in less manpower-intensive stages.

I bet the Nintendo direct for January occurs on a Wednesday.
Like the 10th or 17th. They do seem to like Wednesday the most.

I recall Miyamoto outright saying that they spent a lot of time working on the BotW engine, and that they could use it for future games as well. In theory the next Zelda game shouldn't take nearly as long to make.

I really feel Fujibayashi might be handed the keys to the series. That interview really does suggest like Aonuma's been thinking of moving on for a while. A promotion to producer would probably be about the right moment in Fujibayashi's current career, considering the number of titles in the series he's directed, and having just done the last two AAA console releases in a row, with the latest being an all-out home run.

It's also really notable just how much Nintendo have been emphasizing Fujibayashi's role in BOTW. From accepting its awards, to appearing in videos, to having his thoughts in the guide's foreword, all alongside Aonuma, he's really noticeably being placed on equal footing as Aonuma there. They really seem to at least be thinking about it, and if anyone has the potential to take over it'd be him.
Imagine reading this post right after Skyward Sword when The Internet thought Fujibayashi was Real World Demise in Disguise. Then hard cut to today and everyone's kissing his feet. #gamers

Woah are you just going to ignore Ever Oasis? Not trying to say they will do that sequel, because that's highly unlikely, but they already proved just how capable they are, that game is fantastic.

Yeah, people were scared that it meant Skyward Sword was the future of the Zelda series, Skyward Sword is a great Zelda game but even I have to admit that the linearity hurt the game, the dungeons were great though! I think one thing BOTW2 needs to look at is the SS dungeons (and especially Twilight Princess).

But it bombed from what I've Heard, which probably condemned Grezzo to focus on ports and remasters for a couple of years.

I'd love that we get a direct on Jan 16th since its my Birthday and I have the day off.

To be fair, Ever Oasis released right after E3 alongside Arms with little to no hype on the 3DS, if it also released on Switch in May, it probably would of done better.

I've watched it like 5 times. I swear Iwata kept saying one thing left then announces like 5 more games lol.

I haven't watched it in a couple of years. The first 15 minutes when he talked about Miiverse and Virtual Console were extremely tedious. Makes me appreciate the new format so much more.

Nintendo is hiring level designers for "Splatoon 2" (12/25). Guess they have long term DLC plans / sequels.

Oh yeah that was hard to watch. It just reminded me how much better Nintendo Directs are how. Iwata would drag that stuff out. It helps with the Switch having so much support to announce games too.

Grezzo is a decent studio but there's no way in hell they're getting the reigns of BOTW's sequel since they're not THAT good.

I'm still expecting another remake from them next year (Maybe Zelda 2?).

So Nintendo is going to make Splatoon a one per console franchise?

Maybe? They might end-up treating it like their Mario Kart, Smash or Animal Crossing for the most part where one entry per console is enough.

I don't really mind if we don't see a new sequel until the next Switch version, I'm personally hoping more that Splatoon 3 is an actual revamp of the concept. I was pretty quick the dismiss the early criticisms about Splatoon 2 looking more like "Splatoon 1.5" but the more time went on, the more clear it was that those complaints were not far from the truth. I wish Nintendo does a full expansion of the single player to make it more complex along with a modern online functionality.

That's what I want. I want it to be one per console. If they pop another one out in 2 years it'll probably be more of the same. I want to see them build up the single player.

Grezzo might be working on a OoT-style 3D Zelda, whereas EPD3 is working on BotW2 and a ground-breaking 2D Zelda.

Both Mario and Zelda have three different paradigms (2D, classic 3D, open 3D) and all of them should be supported.

lets hope that includes single player stages. I havent bought Splatoon 2 because its single player isnt what I want it to be

They'll be multiplayer or Salmon Run

I don't think they have plans to expand the story mode, not even in Splatoon 3. Nowadays those modes in online shooters are basically a long tutorial

My bet is GREZZO is porting Skyward Sword to the Switch.

Wii Motion + VS JoyCons: that would be interesting for sure.

It may be soon the time for some virtual console news (even if not called VC). From what I can tell it could be more DS-Gamecube-Wii stuff. Or just the N64 Classic. Or something else entirely (including nothing). However the last couple times I noticed a westerosi engineer sent in Kyoto there was something going on.

With the hybrid console, 2D zelda has yet to be confirmed.
Differently from Mario, the 3d Zelda's sales are better than the 2d ones.

Maybe now the 2d series will be limited to multiplayer games (and remakes).

I see two options:

Team A - next main 3d Zelda
Team B - 2d zelda multiplayer game
Grezzo - Skyward Sword Remake

Or

Team A - next main 3d Zelda
Team B - new IP
Grezzo - 2d Zelda (maybe remake, maybe not)

I hope the second option is the right one

That's possible but would Nintendo feel comfortable basically shutting out handheld mode for that game? Not something I've considered before...

I know some third party games have done handheld only, but we have yet to see a docked/tabletop only game.

A new IP from Aonuma would be fantastic, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

What he said could simply be referring to a spinoff, unfortunately.

I hope I'm wrong though! I'd love nothing more than to see the Zelda team use their talents to create a new IP.

Good point. I did not consider that. Anyways, I think they could design a control scheme without motion controls for handheld mode. Maybe you could control the sword with the right stick?

I was thinking about their recent tradition of porting Zelda games from previous generations too...
