Nioh is my favorite PS4 game. But Mario and Zelda also came out this year.
A good point too. If I *had* to pick, I'd probably pick Mario Odyssey. Though Prey scratched an itch I didn't think it was even possible for an AAA game to scratch. Prey bombing seriously hurt me a lot, reminding me of the way System Shock 2 bombed back in the day.

You guys know it's a list, right? You can include up to 10 games, + honourable mentions. It's not all just a fight for #1.

Oh I know. Just not a fan of list wars at all, really. I don't need a list at the top of Era to gratify my opinions. Also, I just find it sort of arbitrary to normalize a list of games in order that I enjoyed the most. I just listed Odyessy, yet that's probably because I just played it like a week ago at a friends house. Another week it might be Yakuza 0, it might be Prey if I play it again tomorrow, Vaporum if I do that again recently, or even TEW2 if I do that again before Dec 31. I don't like top X of all times for the same reason, really. Too much inherent bias to judge something like that even close to accurately.

Though I would probably give P5 my GotY, it's a singular experience. Nioh keeps me coming back for more. And kicking my face in, but that's just expected, really.

Nioh might make my top-10 after all. My first impression was rather negative for me but I turned around. The gameplay loop is damn addictive, if a little grindy.

I'm shaking, finished every mission on Way of the Samurai. Maybe not that impressive for you Way of the Wise people, but I'm so goddamn happy I managed to beat Everlasting Duty. What a monster of a mission.

I'll be voting for Nioh as my #2 game of 2017.

And for the record, I thought it was bullshit that Nioh didn't win best action game at TGA.

Congrats! I'll even say that I consider the DLC missions to be more difficult than the main storyline missions, yeesh.

Yeah, that one is pretty nutty. The only dual boss mission that I think is actively bad. I understand the thematic angle, but mechanically those two just don't make for a good battle design in the same way most of the dual boss fights do.

You should change your avatar to Gin :)

(I'm assuming your favorite is Ginchiyo, you seem like a Ginchiyo person)
Haha. How did you know? xD I've been playing exclusively as her since I unlocked that skin, until I unlocked Lady Maria's (...the other Lady Maria). Ginchiyo is indeed awesome.

Hmm. Maybe I could put the Other Lady Maria as my avatar... since no one is using it, and so many are using the Bloodborne one already. Hmmmmm

Dignified tough lady that handles her business and has a sardonic personality =p

(Also I get the feeling Ginchiyo is to female players, what Yasuke is to black players.)

Will def have Nioh on my GOTY 2017 list, likely as #1. Problem is, I can't think of any other 2017 games I've played except for Nioh and the PS4 release of Undertale (due to the dreaded backlog). Better get crackin'!

You may have convinced me actually. If only because my avatar isn't unique enough. xD I can't find any good pics of Other Lady Maria, so I'm hesitating between these two:
bitch please! face, or
the fuck you sayin'? face
Decisions... :D

Alternatively...

Word. I love the artistic direction they took for the guardian spirit expositions. Currently rocking Ginchiyo, but will always go back to Okatsu, in time.

As an aside, Way of the Wise has been kicking my ass again since I swapped back to Spear/Sword. The hyper armor on enemies is definitely kicking my face in.

New to Nioh, loving it! Is there a point to buying the season pass immediately? I assume I need a high level character to play it anyway, no? Thanks.

You can only do the dlc afrer finishing the main game, so technically speaking, no, you don't need it yet.

However, if you want to play with tonfas and/or 2-handed sword from the start of thr gamr, as well as the item sets included in the dlc, you will need to get the season pass,

Iirc, an actual onmyo build will only hit its stride with sets that only drop in Way of the Wise difficulty (NG+++) - Grace of Tsukiyomi and Grace of Amaterasu.

You can and should use onmyo (and ninjutsu) for its immense utility - Sloth and Weakness, as well as elemental attacks to proc the status debuffs - while gathering up the necessary items and the proper traits on them, like Change to Attack (Magic), Unlimited Onmyo, etc.

^ I mean, there is one major antagonist totally on the loose at the end of the 3rd DLC. I would imagine that there won't be any more expansions to the first game though. The meta-numbers are already pretty wild.

I would cheerfully maim random bunnies for a Nioh 2, samurai'ing in Europe Edition, racing after the runaway antagonist.

One funny continuity thing about Nioh.
The cutscene for The Queens Eyes clearly shows William having and using Ouroboros. Why isn't its power addressed in any way or form afterwards? He already has some decent ninja training from Hanzo and Okatsu, so having such a useful disguise power at hand should make for some really good infiltration hijinks.

I wonder if they considered locking the character transformations until that point originally...

Got this for Christmas. The 3rd boss is bullshit. Flying bat girl paralyzing ugh. She was completely unplayable for me as an axe user so I started over as a sword main. It's definitely better but god damn.

I really wish people would stop crying bullshit so damn fast. Hino-Enma is quite different from anything you've faced so far, so getting a read on her might take a bit more time that it would if she were introduced after some faster have already shown up, but she is far from bullshit and can be handled with any weapon. Check out this video on her.

I smashed her face in with a spear. The spears great. I haven't gone back to anything else. Her fight was basically a rhythm game with the axe and sword.

New player here in PC. Just got through the first boss and the following bandit mission. The combat system really is as good as it's been hyped up to be. I'm enjoying the minute to minute far more than souls.

I do wish some things were more intuitive, but I'm sure I'll figure it out with time. It definitely feels like armor is paper thin (might as well roll light), and I can't say I enjoyed the first boss.

Also loot. So much worthless loot.

Fucking amazing game. At the same time I love it and hate it (mostly cause of poison and falling into water lol ) but onto the third region and having an absolute blast. Stupid question but any way to forge purples ? I use the highest quality materials but you only ever seem to get whites. Admittedly I've just been messing about with it a bit and not in too much detail, I've been soul matching more as I adore my lovely battle axe. Enjoying the mission based structure quite a bit as well, it makes it easy for me to leave and come back to as I have many family visiting at the minute, having to go out etc. Makes it very easy to come back to. Level design has been a lot of fun too, could do with a bit more enemy variety but it's not like there's only one or two enemy types, still a nice variation. I guess my biggest complaint would be more variation of environments so far but that's about it, hell I even enjoy sifting through all my shitty loot.

With regards to loot, don't forget that the game allows you to filter visibility of drops, and filter or select all items of a rarity and below to sell or disassemble . I would suggest always checking if anything dropped is an upgrade for you as you level up (end-game is all about stacking set bonuses and skills and specific traits on items), and using the touchpad (I dunno what button that is on PC) to filter as you sell/disassemble them.

I would, however, really suggest picking up everything. You'll need the money and item ingredients that you get when you disassemble when you start getting into forging, reforging and soul matching items.

Picked the game the PC version from GreenManGaming.com for $37.50 (25% off). Was going to wait for a better sale but decided to just get it now. Dont know when Ill be able to play it lol but I got it anyway! Loved it when I played it on PS4, but I got distracted and dropped off after the 4th boss.

If you look at the upper middle of the screen when forging, you'll see the percentages you get for every quality type you can reach. Generally speaking, if you have the purple versions of the necessary materials you have a decent chance of getting a purple out of the forging, but there is no way to guarantee it before you have access to the next quality tier at the end of the vanilla missions, which will pretty much invalidate every single item from the previous qualities, including purples.

There are white, yellow, blue and purple versions of each forging material, a batch of which can be upgraded to a single item of the next, higher tier (can't remember the conversion rate). While forging, the game will automatically pick the most rare material quality you have available and the used materials determine the rarity rates for the finished product. There are also 5 booster items you can hand to the smith to increase the chances for better items. Two of them are direct rewards for side quests for the smith, the other three are hidden in certain chests in certain side missions (you have to either stumble into these or look up their locations from some guides).

Thanks very much :) So it is a percentage chance of getting a purple then with the materials, I constantly always use the best quality materials and always convert the materials I have to the best quality but no purples yet. Just the luck of the draw I guess which is fine. I think I've handed over a few of the items to the Tome already, I'm doing everything and searching everywhere that I can so hopefully I'll come across them. If not I'll just look it up on youtube. I honestly didn't realise it was so loot driven but that's cool by me, since I love Diablo etc.

Games got me completely hooked and for the first time in ages I've sunk around 60 hours into a game within the last week and a half with no end in sight. I'm STILL unlocking stuff after all this time (axe mystic arts is love and life) and I know there's still other things to get as well. Such a fantastic mix of japanese action rpg and loot em up. I really hope they don't change the loot system in any sequel they do, I love it.

Yeppers, I love the loot system, even as I curse it endlessly for never dropping the right stuff haha. Just like in Diablo, however, it's all about maximizing set pieces and their set bonuses to fit your playstyle.

Doing good damage is loot-driven, but being able to do that consistently under pressure is, of course, purely driven by skill and positioning. Oh, and using ninjutsu and onmyo correctly.

I finally picked this game up in the January sale. After the slew of Souls games we had in so many years, I was a little tired of the formula.

As a Souls veteran, I didn't think I'd already have this much trouble. I know the skills aren't directly transferrable but I've already hit my first roadblock in the form of Onryoki (the boss on the ship at the end of the fishing village).

I don't really know what's going wrong besides every time I mess up, I basically get 2/3 of my life taken off. My tactic is to dodge behind him when he attacks then lay a few attacks of my own on his back before dodging out of the way of that lightning fast spin attack. But the problem is, there isn't enough time in the cycle to attack/Ki Pulse and dodge (or at least I don't have enough stamina to do so). Maybe it's 'cause I'm a little rusty but I just feel like I'm doing something wrong, I've tried each stance too. Whilst they have their advantages, I feel like if I don't use high (or at least mid), it's gonna take me about 40 minutes to whittle his health down.

Don't go in thinking soulsborne. That will be a net negative in terms of performance. Once I treated it as Ninja Gaiden it was better. Spend yea skills !

I am so, so happy new people are still picking this game up and loving it.

I actually bought it on release on PC but only really got around to it now, loving it. Not even bought a single game in the Steam sale because of it! (and well I've got games like Nier Automata to play too)

Stick to the right of his right foot, makes it easier to avoid his spin which fucks you up badly. Before you know you'll be kicking his ass in no time :) If in doubt just summon a visitor, I feel no shame when I have trouble! (though so far I've done most bosses myself with the exception of Nue for some reason I had a lot of trouble with that fucker)

I hit a similar wall with this guy. A couple of things:

1. Regarding not enough time to cycle attack and Ki Pulse and dodge - buy the Living Water skill as it lets you combine dodge and pulse; it's a game changer.

2. Are you in the green for equip weight? I just accepted his ridiculous damage output and embraced glass cannon mode. I put on my most damaging weapon (was an axe at the time) and just went to town after failing for an hour.

3. It's all about reading that dumb spin move in phase one. If you're in the green for equip weight and only ever swing once or twice, you should be good. Also a thing I noticed is his hit box is deceptively large - you can hit his hands and arms after he swings.

Second boss was much easier for me.
