While the advice is noble, I don't think this is very helpful for someone like OP. I should know, because I have a terrible habit of running through food 24/7 whether I am full or not. Replacing something with a fruit only ensures that I overeat fruit as well. And as we all know, while fruit is healthy, too much of it is certainly deleterious to your health as well. I've done exactly that before, which is replace chips with fruits, and instead I'd find myself eating several apples, an entire bag of grapes, strawberries and everything in between in the same day.

Overeating on fruit is a million times better than overating on candy or snacks. The calorie difference is insane. If I eat two kilos of Broccoli, or two Kilos of Chips makes an incredible difference.

It's all about the calories, and if you have overindulgence issues, replacing what you overeat with low calorie options is exactly part of the solution. I've been there, I speak from experience.

Take Metamucil, it will regulate your digestion, keep you full in-between meals, and your poops will come out perfect everytime.

When buying groceries don't get anything that you can't get away with gorging on.

sometimes when i feel like i'm overeating i remember that my stomach is telling me 'stop' and i realize i'm only eating for the flavor, then i feel a little disgusted, then i stop. i'm 165 lbs trying to lose about 10 lbs. but its hard with this late 30s body, though on the one hand i can feel quickly when i've overeaten but on the other hand losing lbs is very difficult. i don't know if this is helpful to you but i pride myself on my will power as i also quit smoking cold turkey about 15 years ago.

The change is calories is huge though and making dietary changes in the short term is far easier than gaining the mental fortitude to change snacking habits, especially without access to mental health care.

Which amounts to like <500 calories

Versus chips where you can easily eat 500 calories in 5 minutes

Try black coffee....coffee definitely makes you lose appetite. But ensure proper hydration and don't overdo it, of course.

My point was that simply replacing with fruit is not a feasible option for someone like the OP (or me). That isn't sustainable, even if it is less in calories. Ultimately it's still a lot of sugar in the diet for someone who can't control themselves.

I wasn't specifically referring using fruit, just the idea of changing the binging food vs stopping the binging. I realize that wasn't clear reading back on the reply chain though.

But it is. It's a different kind of sugar, that the body deals differently with. Comparing sugars from fruits to sugars from carbs, candy, etc. just doesn't work. It's not a solution, and no one's saying that, but it's a help.

Not to mention that you simply cannot physically overat on fibrous material like fruits as much as you can overeat on candy that simply does nothing to satiate your sense of hunger.

(To illustrate this, a huge pot of veggies, one that you couldn't simply finish in a single day, would still not cover your actually needed calory intake for the day. It's nuts how many veggies you can actually eat before you scratch at calory limits.)

start eating low carb/keto. Even if you cant change the frequency or how much you eat, reducing carbs will help a lot with at least not gaining weight.

I never disputed any of what you're saying. I was strictly speaking from the point of view of substituting the foods with fruit. Obviously I recognize the differences but at the end of the day, fruit still won't provide a feeling of satiety. Protein-rich foods are better suited for that.

Protein rich food is also incredibly easy to overeat. The amount of calories in peanut butter is just cruel (I love peanut butter)

Of course they will. You'd be surprised how much a couple of apples will fill you up.

Protein rich foods are also richer in calories, those won't help all that long. But I do agree that replacing candy bars with protein bars could help. I kind of doubt it, since the availability seems like a bigger problem than "not feeling hungry".

Everything is "easy" to over eat if you have a habit of doing so. But protein is undeniably more filling than carbs

Not true. Overating on veggies is almost impossible physically. Your stomach would burst before you hit a significantly harmful amount of calories. XD

Yea, but over eating spinach nets you an amazing 100 calories. Overeating peanut butter could be more than your entire daily recommended calories.

I'm a volume eater. I don't feel satisfied until I eat a huge amount of food. So to lose weight I had to switch to all vegetables and now I routinely make 1200 calorie salads where like 900 of that is pure vegetable matter in a massive bowl. That was the only way I could get satisfied while keeping my calories in check due to a life of overeating and having no good idea of what being properly full meant.

Eliminate snacks and do meal prep ahead of time so you know exactly what you are eating and when. Allowing yourself to go off script will sink most people regardless of how bad they want to change.

Get those trigger foods the fuck outta there. It's not necessary. Just a habit when watching TV or something. Change it up and cut the junk out. Avoid sugar, period.

Good discussion here.

Personally I always half ass my dinner and that's something to work on. Intermittent fasting has been great for me though, it feels very natural to stick to.

Could you give examples of clean eating? I can make chicken breast but it always comes out bland and hard to chew
Work off of that. Try different temperature+cook time recommendations. Chicken breast is easy when you get it down, but a bit tricky just because it's easy to slightly mess up. Start adding some spices, too. Start simple - a bit of salt and some pepper's a good jumping off point.

Get a veggie dish or two down too. Roasted broccoli is extremely easy and tastes great. Toss it with a few crushed/minced/sliced garlic cloves, a bit of salt and pepper, and then a couple tablespoons of olive oil. I like to add crushed red pepper as well. Cook it at 450 for ~25 minutes (you want the broccoli to crisp up a bit and brown slightly). It tastes great and feels filling despite being low calorie. It also takes a grand total of about ten minutes to prepare - less once you get it down. Great with hot sauce as well.

Exactly what I thought. Find a good therapist or nutritionist who specializes in mental health.

My doctor recommended a pill that that I've been taking for a month. My cravings have gone down significantly.

Just don't buy the junk food. It's easier to avoid buying it when you are grocery shopping than it is to buy it and not eat it when you get home. I am the same way, if there is junk food around that requires zero effort to prepare, it'll be gone in a day.

I basically stopped eating this shit by simply not buying it in the first place.

Personally I would recommend trying keto. I had the same problem, snacking all the time and constantly craving food. I was stress eating a lot. Being on keto I almost never snack because I'm never really super hungry. On most days I'll have a decent sized lunch of around 900-1100 calories and then something small or just a snack for dinner, like cheese and some sausage, and on some days I would be fine with only eating a single meal.

When I first started keto I bought a bunch of keto friendly snacks but in the end I didn't really need them since I rarely felt like snacking.

I've found that a cup of strong filter coffee(no sugar) after a light meal helps me seal my appetite for many hours after. Maybe try that. Also look into vegan Buddha bowls for some clean eating ideas.

This is what worked for me:
Get My Fitness Pal and start logging all food. Being aware of what your calorie intake is can be some of the problem. Also getting into a routine of eating certain things every day can be really good and MFP helps with that. Next, hungry? Have a decaf coffee with skimmed milk. Also get rid of snacks out of the house so temptation isn't there.

Finally, relax. 185lb for a 6ft1 guy(?) is perfectly normal. It sounds more like your problem isn't over eating, but under eating in the past. You might want to look at how you used to be when you were skinny and maybe reconsider whether you were actually 'better' then. It sounds like you're probably a better weight now.

I'm 6'1. I'm not huge at this weight, just unhappy because I used to be skinny, which is where I feel comfortable. I'm hyper-aware of my body fat and how it makes me feel at all times and what it does with my current clothes.

I have reasonable goals - frequent activity and 1500-1600 calories a day. I just don't have the mental strength to destroy my shitty habits.

Maybe my body distribution is different than you, but at 6'2" - I looked deathly ill in the 180s?

I'm constantly losing my mind over the news

maybe start with getting off Social Media for a while (that includes ERA), stop reading newspapers, watching the news, or even involving yourself in these types of conversations with friends and family. Start with identifying the stress and maybe the eating will sort itself out.

Eat before going shopping to help avoid the cravings of junk food while at the store.

Interesting seeing the body distribution. I'm 6' and 170 and I could prob shed about 5-8 pounds

I'm going to try not to be too judgemental so apologies if anything comes across as patronising! So:

I'm also 6ft1 and about 180 and literally everyone calls me a skinny mofo. I'm not muscly but it could definitely be that I'm a bit more muscular than you. But none of that matters. You are thin, you seem to just have a body image problem. It's good you want to lose weight but it's bad you're beating yourself up over it. You're a body weight most people would kill for.

Maybe you need to tone up instead? Try doing 30 press ups when you get up and 30 at night (Or however many you can do). Again routine.

Yeah, body types are just different. I'm a lot less meaty than most men. My dad and brother are also of the dark souls "bean pole" type. We all lift, we are all hard gainers of muscle mass, and we get bellies when we overeat. That's just how it is.

Up your water intake. This will make you feel more full.

It sounds like you have a hardcore snacking issue. Now you can try to quit that cold turkey, but if that doesn't work, you're going to have to get smarter about how you snack. Choose a few items that satisfy you when you really get the urge but are at a lower calorie range or at least lower than the highest calorie choices you make.

Honestly through 6'1 185 ... c'mon man. You're not really overweight at all. That's bordering on being skinny full stop for that height, think you're probably being a little too hard on yourself. 6'1 155 is not a good weight at all, that's full blown skinny.

180 would put you towards the upper range of a healthy body mass for that height. Would be very strange if you looked deathly ill.

Its been a long time since I've been close to that weight, but you can kind of see the direction I was heading in:

My weight is super evenly distributed though. I have thick calves, thick thighs, thick torso, etc. It doesn't collect disproportionately anywhere.

This was what I did a few years ago when I lost a ton of weight. I don't know why but I've repeatedly failed to commit to doing this recently.

I live with my girlfriend but we buy our own groceries independently.

It absolutely is. I have an anxiety disorder as well as a few actual genetic conditions that affect my appearance. I've been in and out of therapy. Just don't really have great access now as I've aged out of my mom's insurance and don't get it through work. I've always hated my body, but I still know the difference between normal and overweight.
You have a gf. Why are you so obsessed with your body? Does she make you feel bad about how you look ?

Stop buying crap when you go grocery shopping. You can't eat it if you don't have access to it.

If you have no willpower, only go grocery shopping when you're full and not in the mood to eat.

Used to be in a similar situation, pushing 200+ lbs and getting worse every day. This was my problem:

- I eat when I'm bored or up late, especially watching videos or shows at my desk.

It's a tremendous challenge for the first few weeks, but stopping that solved everything for me. I don't particularly eat healthy every day, and my only exercise is carrying my kids occasionally to various places. As of February 2018 I stopped snacking throughout the day and no more eating after dinner. Period. I've weighed 155lbs for about a year and it's static.

I'll again reiterate it's a tremendous challenge to just cut that off to start, it's not for everyone, but after a few weeks it got really easy and really knocks that calorie intake down.

If you can't control your eating habits then spend more time at the gym and bulk up. You might still have some extra fluff, but you'll look much better with some muscular development. Stick to an actual, established and measured program (5x5, PPL, nSuns, etc.).

I'm similar - 6'4 always have had glaring body issues stemming from being a fat kid growing up. Dieted w/ keto down to 165, realized that I just don't have the body type to pull that off without looking unhealthy and have been trying to bulk since. With creatine I'm at about 200lbs now. It's hard sometimes, I feel like I'm too big and am afraid of being fat again, but the objective truth is that I look better and feel better with a little more weight. I'm not sure what your "ideal" would be, but if you're anything like me then you might be better off just embracing your body type and getting as healthy as you can.

how old are you man? im kinda in the same boat as you... 6'0 170ishlbs... i used to be 150ish... but that was maybe 10-15 years ago. looking back, yeah my tummy might have been a bit flatter but i was a fucking scrawny teenager; everything about me was smaller. i'm bulkier now and that's a pretty natural progression most guys will go thru, unless you are highly physically active.

im over 30 now and i'm content. our metabolism slows, we pack on a lil extra over time, and most guys wear it well. im definitely not fat, and neither are you.

You will eat whats available so create situations where the food you want to avoid isnt available.

I dont buy snacks sooo theres no snacks in my house so I dont eat them.

Little things like that will add up. Good luck
