finally beat the campaign , 10/10 this is by far the best most intense campaign in 2019

now the graphics are also on another level for a UE4 game , just pure joy to watch with HDR on

graphics setting that i turn down a little and gain more fps are vol.fog and tessellation , they don't make a difference above HIGH option

I'm still on Act 1 (MP has pulled me in everytime I boot up!) but it's so much fun. Swarm everywhere and it's all kicking off 99% of the time. Absolutely love it!

Oh and the graphics are incredible, definitely the best looking game I've played to date. It's really colourful and for the amount that's happening on screen, I feel like it barely drops a frame. Amazing achievement from The Coalition.

I was never a big carer for 4k & 60fps, but after Gears 5 I want it in every game.

Like Forza Horizon 4 is jaw dropping but I hate choosing between 4k OR 60fps.

But FH4 is consistently a native 4k throughout, whilst Gears 5 offers a constantly changing dynamic resolution coupled with adaptive geometry rendering. In other words, it's not really a like for like on the resolution front.

I guess but with you have to choose between graphics and performance, and with Gears it feels like i'm getting both.

Basically I'm excited for next gen when more games will be native 4k and 60fps... at least from this gen's titles.

I just know that Gears 5 looks insane on my 65" 4K TV where I sit too close, never once thinking it doesn't look native. It is the most graphically impressive game for me this whole gen when I consider how it looks in 60 FPS motion, and I have played God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 with my setup.

So what? It's imperceptible drops in resolution, at this point in the gen I think we all pretty well accept that dynamic res is a huge plus, and if you have to choose dynamic res that doesn't drop perceptibly versus 'locked' 4k at half the fps...no brainer.

I don't think Edge are wrong there. I'm enjoying the game, but it's massively overcomplicated.

All said and done really great reviews. It's an amazing game and a huge step up from G4 , TC should be proud. I've been taking my sweet time with the campaign should be done this weekend.

That the effect of micro-transaction and shit policies at first a 6 out of ten would upset a lot of fans, But now that 6 out of ten of Edge is ok and nobody cares. I don't think is a 6 out of ten but at least a 7.5. most of it for the atrocious micro-transactions.

Small tip for those of you aiming for Tour of Duty medal "Del the Builder" (Build 300 fortifications in Horde as Del) solo. Choose Horde->custom>host lobby. In lobby options select private lobby, fill with bots, starting wave=50, difficulty beginner. Start match, place fabricator in fairly secure location. After placing fabricator you may notice that you have 50k power to spend. Now is the time to build cheapest fortification 20 something times. Build it anywhere, we are here for medal only. Be aware that there are many enemies in that wave and you will be attacked. After spending all power hit options and return to lobby. Then start match again and repeat till you get medal. I think this way obtaining medal should take about 1h-2h. Useful card perk for Del is that one lowering fortifications' cost (if you levelled Del before). Legit way of obtaining that medal is pretty grindy and can take many hours. Downside of this method is you won't level Del at all, pretty much no xp for constant match restarts.

I got the impression that levelling up your fortifications in legit match of horde isn't affecting medal progress. Only new buildings count(I think). I hope that in the next tour of duty they revise medals somewhat (this one should be "build or upgrade fortifications 300 times").

Same score as gears 4 . Not bad at all but imo gears 5 single player was better

I think Edge gave Gears of War 4 a 7/10. The highs of 5 are way above 4, but the lows are also lower, with too many instant death attacks and open world sections that don't add much. It's clearly best in chapter 1 - which is almost perfectly paced - and 4. Overall they're both great games.

That the effect of micro-transaction and shit policies at first a 6 out of ten would upset a lot of fans, But now that 6 out of ten of Edge is ok and nobody cares.

Is that their reasoning? Microtransactions? It would be really nice if reviewers started severly punishing anything with microtransactions in it.

I expected a bigger hit from a 6 by Edge. Shocked that a 9 from Xbox UK Mag pushed it back to 85.

Maybe metacritic has started to weigh Edge's score differently since their rating scale isn't the same as in other publications?

According to Wikipedia this is their rating system:
1 – disastrous
2 – appalling
3 – severely flawed
4 – disappointing
5 – average
6 – competent
7 – distinguished
8 – excellent
9 – astounding
10 – revolutionary

I don't think "competent" is the word IGN would use for a 6/10 game...

I played through Gears 4 this summer, so it's crystal clear in my mind, zero nostalgia.
From a single player perspective it was okay but certainly had it's share of issues that dragged it down. The tower defense gameplay in Gears 4 simply wasn't fun, and the droids were kinda boring, and the mech got me yawning. And that was like half the game. For me Gears 4 literally started feeling like a proper Gears of War when the swarm showed up half through the game. It wasn't bad but it was a weird Gears of War imo.

Gears 5 is simply in a whole other league; better shoot outs, better enemies, Kait, the warden, jack tactics and upgrades, boss fights, set pieces, the skiff, the mild exploration. Fantastic game!

I've still not accepted the multiple endings though, that wasn't needed, and it'll just be complicated going forward.

I don't mean this in a bad way: I think that's as positive a review of Gears 5 as Gerstmann could have possibly given.

I think a lot of people who might read it will benefit from the more jaded outlook, even if parts of his rationale seem needlessly begrudging about the fun he obviously had. I still have very real reservations about how he brackets the question of whether a game of this quality (by his own measure) with such a large amount of content is "worth" $60.
