Pretty sure some dude drew a lowercase i and then dotted it with his thumbrint and called that a poem once. Poems don't need to be long.

I'd also say there's no real difference between a poem and song lyrics--song lyrics are poems. One could argue it's like a square/rectangle thing where all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles were squares, but when you get into more experimental music, poetic STUFF can fall away from the lyrics and they still work.
Okay that's way understandable.

Now I have a better frame of mind for thinking of poems

Listening for a sound.
A faint jingle or a meow.
Just something to let me know that you're alright.

Drowning in deafening silence
praying for that sound
something to let me feel like the world is still spinning.

Trapped in my mind.
Wondering what I could have done differently.
wondering who I should blame.

Clinging to my hope.
that everything will be fine
but with each passing second I know it becomes more likely tonight will be stained with sorrow.
Just please come home to make things right.

As a general FYI I signed the thread up on the community spotlight in the vein hope we'll hit that page 3 some day.

Also to plug in Chenjerai Hove, who's chapbook I've been reading. Quick link to one of his poems (I can't find a version of my favorite online so far).

I thinnk one of my favorite things about poetry is its very quick but it sticks with you. If you ever feel like your reading is lacking in diversity, maybe try your local poetry section in the library? Try to find someone you've never heard of. Plus a 78 page chapbook is a much more reasonable commitment than a 1000 page novel, just saying.

I think I might post in this thread in a lot. I've recently been doing something resembling poetry—or maybe closer to Dadaist word art or half-assed cut up technique song lyrics—like late at night. It's like a semi-intellectualized thing where I start typing a line and challenge myself to create a stanza or something from. I don't think I'm any good and I'm way too embarrassed to actually share it with anyone IRL. Haunted by trauma of like sophomoric poetry writing and worried I'm just doing that with ten-cent words.

These are all different poem things. The last one is like a thing where I imagine my social anxiety isn't innate and instead something I decided to learn and get a degree in after college.

Suburban culture
Suburban vulture
Exurban voyager
I grew a culture
In my living room
Handclap to handclap
This much I'm telling you
I see you wanting
I see you waiting
Jamming to the cacophony of whatevers
Backed by the chorus of infinite nevers

----

Linguistic sins
By semi-intellectual men named Vin
In a feigned British accent, I tell him:
He can't pronounce potato
He can't pronounce tomato
He can do a pretty good "Oh"
While in sexual congress
But that's not much for a mind in regress
And yet the galaxy's wanting and waving

----

I don't mean to brag about my diffidence
But I have a Master's degree in English social illiteracy
I ignored the professors
I ignored the TAs
I never showed up on the right day
I never read the room
I intellectualized maladjustment in the worst way
I studied and studied
And now I don't know how to start a conversation

I really liked the suburban one, I thought you had a lot of really clever rhyming/leading into different motifs. Of the three, its easily my favorite.

Tears will fall like rain
from Flower's overjoyed eyes
if this quote is true

:P

Tears isn't quite the right word. More like shock at seeing the dead rise. Sometimes I feel like Poe with the poetry thread cawing down at me through my laptop screen. Very spooky.

i'm tired of capital art without aspirations of capitol careers' harm
clarification: don't hurt anyone but render them unemployable
make the careerists find a new career
i dunno, start an etsy shop or something of a toil

capital art isn't an instagram caption that's basically a captcha
capital art isn't comfortable art
capital art isn't coming too soon
capital art isn't adorning your living room
capital art isn't up to interpretation
capital art isn't thematically coy

capital art is:
—fussy
—neon fucking values
—disjointed
—leaving here with you

Finish Line

This is how the race begins,
I'm reaching out for something

'Cause I'm just a lovestruck fool
Who's always ever pining

And I'm still running,
Ever running,
Trying to catch up to you

Voices in my head are crying
"I just want to be with you!"

One and only love,
Take us to the level above

I am burning up,
But I see the finish line now

Oldie but a classie:
SUCH IS LIFE
Everywhere, it seems, answers are absent
From the vastness above and the horizons around
To the wind in the air and the dirt on the ground
Everything's full of nothing, nothing but questions

We all need meaning, but where do we start?
Why do we start? Why do we end?
Everyone embarks to ascend or descend

Life is short, but living is sweet
With places to go and people to meet
We yearn to be swept off our feet
The sweep can be erratic and compelling
To be taken in by the brisk occurrence
To genuinely embrace it while it's propelling

But sometimes the broom's a brush
And you're brushed away like dust
Say "So long" to the rush
And "Farewell" to the lust
No one ever entirely adjusts
You live and learn. In any case, you live

The world is a densely complex place
But we can trudge through at our own pace
Time is merely a conception
A synthetic perception
It's our lives that need embracing
It's our problems we need to be facing

Answers may still be lacking
Whilst questions continue their stacking
Yet such is life; as unpredictable as it is inexplicable

"a haunting"

Phase through walls,
antiquities of memory and time;
apparate on a plain,
between matter and a straight line

So, in your memory, I propose a toast,
though it's humiliating to be haunted by your own ghost

Oh what a neat thread. Recently I've been working on practicing my poetry, though it is far from my main form of expression. In class we are covering a lot of foreign poets and it has all been very inspiring, well, admittedly I could do without some of the romanticism poetry but I digress.

Here's something prompted by Siken and Jake Kennedy. It's meant to be two separate pages, hence the white space on the first part.

While reflecting on imaginary friends and the movie Drop Dead Fred I went searching for poems on imaginary friends and found this one for children off the hop.

My friend, Sherla, was hard to see
for Mom and Dad, not me.
My imaginary friend was all I had.
I'm an only child, you see.

Most times Sherla was really good.
We did puzzles, read, and played.
We made our beds and cleaned our room
ALMOST every single day.

But sometimes Sherla spilled my milk,
sometimes she wrote on walls,
sometimes she told me not to come
when Mom and Daddy called.

I had to have a talk with her
about being a naughty kid,
cause I'm the one who got time out
for all the things she did.

It's different now, I go to school
and I have friends everywhere.
Sherla doesn't come here now
and I thought I she didn't care.

Mom told me Sherla's 'special'
cause only I could see,
but now she lives with someone else
who needs her more than me.
C.J. Heck

Now, I really want to find others.

There's a new thread that's been posted and it's one that perfectly
Suits my taste and suits my humor, oh my God it's just for me
I have to spend a moment, just a minute of my time
To slap a witty post together, both smart and sublime

Maybe I will start it with some humor, how's a pun?
Nah, puns are overrated, so Frank Castle's work is done
How about a joke? One day three guys, they hit a bar
But once their faces hit the brass, they didn't get too far!

No stupid, that's just stupid, that's an old one and so lame!
If I post that ancient joke, I know I'd get some blame
Or how about a quote about a vote in which a stoat
Voted its stoat vote against a goat behind a moat?

Eh, even guys named Seuss who could claim a PhD
Would reject that stupid concept; so I guess I do agree
Forget opening with humor! Let's get into the meat
Of this thread's main concept, the one that's making heat!

...I don't know that much about this. Although I thought I did
But now that I am reading, I feel like a little kid
But joy oh joy, am I in luck! This kind of thing ain't tricky!
I sneakily abscond away straight to the topic's wiki!

A newly minted expert, I return to sainted thread
'Cause I must loose this zinger now before it flees my head
My fingers fly, it's do or die, they smack the keys like hammers!
Red lines show up like bloody scars; screw you, no time for grammar!

I press submit with bated breath
My genius is composed!
Only to see
Appear to me

This thread has now
Been closed

Who should I be following? I'm a big fan of Aria Aber, Ada Limon, Luther Hughes, and Terrance Hayes.

Hey, nice. I like all of them. The last Terrence Hayes book is probably my favorite thing in a long time.

I think Jericho Brown, Jos Charles, Simone White, Timothy Donelley, Oliver de la Paz, and Harriet Mullen are worth looking at. There's more, I'm sure, that's just what first jumps out.

Jericho Brown is very active on twitter, so he's a good way to find other people to check out

I finished Langston Hughes' Weary Blues last week and absolutely reccomend that to anyone.

The South, Caribbean Sunset, Mother to Son, Proem, and Epilogue are standouts within it.

Here's what will become a song between now and six months from now

Haunted in your Head

I make you scream
I force your dreams
I'm everything you hate about you
Succumb to fright
This endless night
I'm forever right behind you

I am the haunted in your head
Haunted in your head
I am the thing beneath your bed
Fill you full of dread
And when you wish that you were dead
Know
That I will never leave you

I stalk the halls
I make you fall
I'm everything you hate about you
You cannot hide
You cannot fight
I'm forever right behind you

I am the haunted in your head
Haunted in your head
I am the thing beneath your bed
Fill you full of dread
And when you wish that you were dead
Know
That I will never leave you

I am the hangman's noose
I am the razor's bloom
I am the poison's use
I am the pistol's boom

I am the haunted in your head
Haunted in your head
I am the thing beneath your bed
Fill you full of dread
And when you wish that you were dead
Know
That I will never leave you
So it's kinda blowing my mind that the thread I posted song lyrics in is old enough for the song to now be finished, mixed, mastered, and released

I haven't really brushed up on traditional poetry in what feels like a year now, which sucks since I kinda enjoy working with it. It's fun. But also song lyrics are cool too.

Oh dear, this thread is a year old. I thought it was about 4 months old. Time is getting away from me.

Phoenix is misspelt in the OP.

I don't have a new contribution at this time.

That's dumb. Th eenglish language is dumb. Why is the o silent? Why????

I have to admit,
It was nice to see updates.
It's been quite a while...

Right? I'm very happy with how active the thread is atm. Might even get to page 3!! Does make me miss the poetry challenges but alas!

Just something that popped into my head.

Sinking into state of mind
Sitting in a solemn seat
With nothingness accompanying
Me in these quaint quarters

Where there are webs weaved
On the wooden walls that wail
At the dancing flame inside the
Quarters I alone reside

Watching the world burn
In the humble fireplace.

Watching the world burn
In the humble fireplace.

This has potential.

What are some good websites/magazines to keep an eye out for if I want to read more poetry.

I'm not the one you asked, but...

Poetry Foundation
Griffin Poetry Prize
Poets.org
Poetry Society UK
readalittlepoetry.wordpress.com
The Paris Review
Perverse Mag
Cha Asian Blog
POETRY magazine
Third Coast Mag

As for presses, I have so much faith in Graywolf Press that I expect anything they release to be good, and this is how I discovered Catherine Barnett and Sally Wen Mao. Coffee House Press and Wave Books are also generally great.

But surprisingly enough, Twitter is the richest pool of poems and poetry studies you can draw from, speaking from personal experience. I've found a lot of excellent and diverse and even crazy material there. It's also the most wholesome community on the site. Just follow a few active poets and sites (I recommend Luther Hughes, Caroline Bird, Sam Sax, Victoria Chang, the aforementioned Jericho Brown, and Aria Aber to start) and it snowballs from there.

Some stuff I first found on Twitter:
