The most disappointing game of the year, bar none. So many unforgivable design decisions, and only one design decision I liked (Lunar mode).

I never imagined a sequel to the rather-janky-but-charming Gravity Rush would actually end up worse - it seemed like a case where it could only get better.

I could talk about the stuff I hated in Gravity Rush 2 all day - the story, the characters, the pacing, the combat system, the camera, the boss fights, the mining, the talisman system, the dusty token system, the overly-large world and subsequent traversal times, the side quests, the stealth sections... but I won't because this is an OT and I'm just posting this to make sure people try the demo before buying. Anyway, the usual rebuttal to these arguments is typically "But Kat is cute so it's okay" - which is what I imagine the designers were thinking while making the game.

Honestly saying the game is mediocre would be too kind. It's bad.

Loved this game. Was really sad when finished. Glad someone let this get made. You can really feel the team's passion l. Nothing else like this. Also adored the first.

I picked it up. I loved the first game.

Anyone got an estimate for how long it'd take to unlock all the outfits in the game that require the online challenge stuff? I'm hooked on Zelda right now but I'd like to get those outfits before the servers shut down on the 18th. Just in case they don't make them available some other way.

Thanks for making this OT! I'll be the first to admit that Gravity Rush 2 is a flawed game, but it's still one of my favorites. Personally I prefer games that try something new over games that just focus on ticking all the boxes to get a good Metacritic score. A lot of what Gravity Rush 2 did goes counter to what you'd expect to see from video games nowadays. It didn't require a fay 1 patch, nor did it feature micro-transactions. In fact, all of its DLC is free. And the game has plenty of content as well. Even just the Delvool Trench Mines alone offer 50 optional challenges for the experienced Gravity shifters. You can easily spend 80-100 hours completing all the game has to offer.

For what it's worth, there's an on-going campaign trying to get Sony to reconsider their decision to shut down the servers(disclaimer: Gravity Rush Central is my website). While it's a single-player game at its core, I think the impact of losing the servers will only really become apparent to people after they're gone. This is my own write-up with more details on what the game is losing, including things not mentioned by Sony:

  • Sending/Receiving Challenges: You'll no longer be able to challenging other players (random or friends) to beat your "ghost" in a Challenge. These challenges can currently be accessed via the menu, or appear as "Gold" Kats in the game world.
  • Browse ranking: Both the worldwide Dusty Tokens charts and all of the 20 in-game Challenge leaderboards are being removed. You'll no longer be able to see how your score compares to the rest of the world.
  • Receiving and posting Treasure Hunts: This is probably the most popular online mode, where you can search for the location of a treasure chests by means of a photo taken by another player. Think of the photo as the equivalent of a treasure map.
  • Receiving, posting and reviewing photos:: You can take photos in-game and then upload them for others to review. These appear as "blue" Kats throughout the game world. By interacting with them, you can vote whether or not you like the photo. This will also be removed.
  • Earning Dusty Tokens and rewards: Dusty Tokens are earned by participating in some of the above online modes. There are 10 unique rewards that can be unlocked this way, including a talisman that allows for infinite shifting. When the servers go down, new players won't be able to unlock these rewards.
Undocumented changes (not mentioned by Sony):

  • Ghosts of the Fallen: If you die in the dungeon-like "Delvool Trench Mine" challenges (consisting of 50 layers, each with their own challenge), your ghost would be left behind, along with half of the items you had collected so far. Other players could find your ghost and collect those items. When the online servers go down, you'll no longer encounter ghosts from other players.
  • Treasure Chest items: there are a total of 58 unique in-game items that can be found in treasure chests. Without the online "Treasure Hunts" functionality, finding these becomes a near-impossible task.

I mean, I guess the game isn't for you but I disagree with a lot of that. Lisa is a fantastic character and I'd argue stronger than any character in Gravity Rush 2.
I'd also argue that many of the previous characters make a return in Gravity Rush 2 and it was great seeing them again after the time passed
The treasure hunts were fantastic and the camera was a lot of fun to mess around with. The use of the photos at the end was great. The story wraps up so many loose ends and mysteries the first game left it is hard to see how it could be considered worse. Neither game is particularly great when it comes to combat but the variety added by Lunar and Jupiter is surely welcome not to mention
the Raven segment
was very neat. The controls felt better to me and the area never felt too big to traverse though I did sometimes use fast travel. I enjoyed exploring and flying around looking for stuff. I welcomed the nice vibrant colours of the mid to upper layers of the new city. I also the bosses, particularly towards the end. They were a bit of a slog but it was still enjoyable and the music is fantastic in both.

The challenges were as good as the first and the online leader boards will surely be missed. It was fun earning tokens when others tried to beat your score as well.

Pacing might be a contender but lets not pretend Gravity Rush never had pacing issues either. I particularly remember long segments in dreams and annoying segments where you lost your gravity powers temporarily.

Oh nice. Thanks for making this OP, Toon Link.

I started playing again last week to finish up the game and collect tokens. I finally hit 6000, but I'm still treasure hunting and completing challenges to give other players more chances.

I also reached the final boss last night but had to shut things down because it was getting late.

Have to 2nd this here.

6000 Dusty Tokens is no small task but with the help the group is providing is you should get there before the server shutdown.

Wonderful and helpful folks in that crew and a quick thank you to them for the help they have provided me so far!

I'd place money on many of these problems being with you, not the game.

Like I'm sure you had issues with the Electricitie boss fight, and completely failed to realize that there were bombs scattered throughout that you could have thrown at her to make the fight easier.

I finished it a good two weeks and It's pretty much the first game again but with a few new mechanics and improved combat so I was more than satisfied with it. Only real problem with the game is that it's clear the team knew a third game wasn't likely and basically cramped the entire plot of the supposed third game into the end of this one which make the ending a mess. Plotpoints and mysteries are also brought up and the next mission are already solved. The game starts of with a plot that has some interesting themes going on but just suddenly wraps itself up before shifting focus and the same thing happens again before the last part of the game where it just kinda goes nuts. But again amazing game that's pretty much an improvement all around. Too bad the online is getting closed down so soon.

I got this in the last EU psn sale when it was 20 and I'm having quite the problem wanting to play it. I've reached
Hekseville
already, have the three gravity variants, but to get here I've had to skip a lot of secondary missions. That's my problem, it's something I'd never have done to Kat, but those I've played have been mostly shit. I'm not doing challenges either but that's something I usually do later on, with more power level. But the side missions are bothering me.

Not only that, upon arrival to this location, I was getting engaged in the main story at last, but now I'm kinda lost here. It's been nice getting here though.

Anyway, I've been playing other things, MH:W beta and all, and I'm taking it slowly, but I'll definitely play at least the main missions and the dlc.

It's been disappointing to me having to resort to ignoring side missions, that's all. The game's graphics and controls are really nice and some new characters are cool for now (Lisa and the guardian boy mostly).

Main missions have been mostly good but I think they can get better. And I'm looking forward to learning more about Kat and getting closure. And the music is, as always, very cool.

Even if I end up with a disappointing feeling when I'm done with the game, and/or if I don't ever do some side content, I'm gonna miss this franchise eventually and I'm thankful for having this sequel.

The least they can do (if they shut down the servers) is make most of the things available through them available to all in offline mode.

They did it with the latest FFXV patch, shut down the online quests and made all the online items available offline. Shouldn't be hard to do for this.

Currently at 1580 Dusty Tokens as of my third day playing. Been enjoying the game so far, basically being more GR but bigger and with better, more colorful visuals (I would be sadder for the loss of 60 FPS in exchange for a prettier game, but that wasn't as important to the combat of something like GR). Can't say I care much for the change to the gravity slide though, which doesn't handle as well as in GR:R even with being only one button now.
I remember they're planning to shut down GR2 server, but when?
January 19th.

I loved this game, and liked this one a lot more than Gravity Rush 1 (only played the remaster though). I agree that there are a few issues, and I think the challenges were a bit more fun in the original, but I still enjoyed the gameplay and liked some of the changes. I also found the story, characters, setting and music in GR2 a lot more fun.

I didn't have the patience to keep playing to unlock all of the available items (in terms of costumes I'm just missing one, I think), but I really liked some of the online features for this game. Taking cool photos to send to other players (especially for treasure hunts) was a ton of fun, and it's sad that this is already ending only a year after release.

And partly thanks to the online mode, I really got into the photo mode in this game a lot more than usual. The game's just perfect for it: Kat's very photogenic, can put on many different costumes, can do many different emotes, the world is very beautiful, you can apply a few great filters, and the photos have a use in gameplay (i.e. the treasure hunts and other stuff). I have a few fun pics -- I'll see if I can get them off my PS4 and post them here one of these days.

This is going to sound horrible but: I like that costume and totally forgot to redeem my code, so thank you for reminding me to check for that now. Hopefully someone else who doesn't like it also forgot to check their emails from Amazon like me. :x

Hey, not horrible at all my fellow person. Glad I was able to look out for someone!

I don't know if I grind the tokens by server shutdown. :(
My friend bought the game 3 days ago and they have already hit 1000 tokens. Obtaining 6000 tokens before the servers shut down is still very possible.

One thing to note however is that random items
(pieces of furniture for Kat's home)
are rewarded through the treasure boxes. So players should still take part in treasure hunts after reaching 6000 Dusty tokens.

Didn't they double the coin take in? I was planning on installing the game and trying to get a few more. That, and trying to grind out more SF5 fight money before they change that up too.

I'm sad I'm so late to the party, treasure hunting looks fun.

Grinding those tokens before shutdown would probably make me hate the game, so I'll pass. I want those costumes but not that much.

I might play this again before the online stuff goes down.

I feel that the story was fine if you looked at each part as a light novel volume. It felt like a series of small stories than one overarching plot. The game could've been better if the side quests had more variety and dropped the stealth.

Hm, not necessarily. Treasure hunts, challenges, and photo reviews are pretty much just things that I do along the way as I play as I usually would (just flying about and advancing the main story and doing sidequests at my own pace). Before I started, I did worry at least a little that I could wind up getting burnt out on it, but it's gone more smoothly than anticipated so far. The fact that the game has been more generous in handing out the tokens ahead of the shutdown helps a great deal.

So you don't wanna shit on the game cuz it's the OT but you do it anyway? Lol I mean you're free to talk negative on it if that's how you feel about it but I don't see what the point of the facade was.

Not really from a narrative standpoint but you'll be missing out on how great one particular moment of the game is and won't have the same bond with the characters. I say if you're interested cop both.

There are plot points from the 1st you'll miss out on, but they're not huge and complex plot points, and they do get explained in 2 for newcomers to the series, so you'd be fine imo.

I felt a little the same, the beginning over stayed its welcome and I was tempted to skip the side quests. In fact I did for a bit but went back and completed some of them later. The side quests individually aren't very exciting, what it is doing is establishing Kat's presence and reputation among the citizen of the new city. This is a necessary step but also rather slow and boring. I say it is worth to come back to side quests later. The game is a slow start and especially so if you come off the high of the Gravity Rush 1 finale.

I'm sad I'm so late to the party, treasure hunting looks fun.

Grinding those tokens before shutdown would probably make me hate the game, so I'll pass. I want those costumes but not that much.
Personally if you enjoy completing the challenges and do some treasure hunts it isn't so bad. I also took some screen shots and rated a few other shots that I found. I think it would be better to work on it a little bit at a time as you progress rather than try to grind it out once you're done but maybe that's just me.

I just finished about 20 mins ago. Amazing ending. It feels like I just wrapped up two seasons of a brilliant 90s anime. I'm completely satisfied and I love how they left the right questions unanswered.

Yep. No contest.

Definitely agree with the two seasons sentiment. Halfway through the game I thought I was near the end, and that doesn't mean it dragged on.. the story just had a lot of movements to it.

You can understand most of the plot I think but you miss out on the establishing of friendships, rivalry and other character details which I think makes some points in the second game that much stronger. I would recommend both games.

I got this and Yakuza 0 as Christmas gifts. I just started playing Gravity Rush 2 and so far I'm really liking it.
