Edit:
Hi, for those of you asking what's been happening lately with the logo or trying to catch up with this thread, here's a long explanation.

Insiders have all come forward collectively earlier on this month stating that the Direct is happening 1/11.
Since then, a massive hype train has collected and theorizing multiple things. These things include stuff like 2018 being a year of ports for Nintendo, such as Wii-U Ports or Third Party ports (such as the very heavily rumored which is basically deemed to nearly be true, Dark Souls 1 Remaster or Port). Since that was dropped out of the rumor base, users on /r/Kappa who has had a very flimsy record when it comes to being right or wrong, even though he did leak the TMNT to Injustice 2 DLC, also came forward saying the same shit but WILD ass predictions which everyone has not believed.

At this point in time, as of yesterday, Nintendo of America was rumored to have posted the announcement that the Direct was happening 1/11. Reason being, Nintendo has a track record of announcing directs in a format of two days or one day before if it's a direct about multiple games, and multiple days before if its just a single game. However, when the time strike 3PM EST (or 2PM don't remember correctly), Nintendo retweeted the damn parrot from Mario Odyssey. However, hours before this happened, someone in this hype thread stated this
"They should RT the bird tweet from weeks ago so we know they're watching us", when 3PM EST struck this was retweeted with the picture of the parrot:
"What is the secret you're seeking? I know it, I know it, ha HA! I can't tell you! ♪ It's hiding somewhere and no peeking! ♪ Go find it, go find it, scra-CAW!"

Then today happened.
As of Today, we had a couple of things happen overall. First and foremost, at 5AM on the Dot, Super Mario UK on Twitter tweeted out a picture of Mario using fire balls in Super Mario Odyssey. Then we had this incident where GameStop messed up (or purposely trolled us) stating in a tweet "The Nintendo Direct is happening in 45 minutes!", then deleted it. Since then, we also had a Direct square logo space pop up on Nintendo JP's website. On top of this, for all of you coming in asking "Why is the logo with Chibi Robo on Fire a thing?" here is your answer. Nintendo of America joined on the continuous fun and tweeted a picture of Chibi Robo on fire at 12PM EST. At 1PM, Nintendo NYC also joined in the fun tweeting out this Mii with a hot dog suit on. Since these tweets have happened , we've also had multiple video game Twitter accounts tweet pictures, too, but at Nintendo.
Including:
There are others, too, however if you notice all of them have the same theme, a character on fire. At one point, the theme from a twitter account, such as Trove, tweeted "Things are getting hot in here" or "getting fired up". We also had RogerBase, a fellow ResetERA user/Nintendo Ambassador & Youtuber stating in a DM to a Youtuber known as EtikaWorldNetwork that a Direct is happening tomorrow with no announcement, he also made the video that is now up with GameXplain about Predictions.

As of now, I believe that is all there is to know with everything linked for those of you who don't know what's going on and for those of you trying to catch up. Also small thing to note, the other day Amazon SKU's popped up (several of them), users preordered them and now they're getting cancellation emails.

That's all folks!

Edit2: 1upmuffin has requested we put a link to the Nintendo ERA discord here so that people can join up and chat if they'd like, even after all this is over:

With 2018 right around the corner and the Nintendo Switch lighting up the sales charts, everyone is wondering what the company has in store for its sophomore year.

Let's speculate on titles think we could see in a hypothetical Nintendo Direct:
file.jpg

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Pikmin 4
file.jpg

In July 2015, Shigeru Miyamoto gave an interview to Eurogamer in which he revealed that Pikmin 4 was in development and nearing completion. We can assume that this title has likely been moved to development for Nintendo Switch, and is therefore a strong candidate for a hypothetical upcoming Nintendo Direct.

2. Super Mario Maker Switch
file.jpg

Super Mario Maker was a big new IP for the Wii U, selling over 3.5 million copies worldwide. A continuation of the series makes a lot of sense from a number of perspectives, not least of all the form factor of the Switch itself. Capable of the same touch screen utility as the Wii U, a new entry would be capable of the same intuitive controls. Secondly, Super Mario Maker's online functionality was one of its most critical components, and Nintendo will soon be launching their own online subscription service a la Xbox Live/Playstation Plus which will charge users in exchange for fully featured online services. They will need games to sell this service to consumers, and Super Mario Maker could very well be a part of that plan.

3. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch
file.jpg

As mentioned above, Nintendo is going to need games to sell their new online service. Aside from their already released titles, no game is going to entice gamers to pay for multiplayer than a new Super Smash Bros. title. The critically acclaimed Wii U entry, released in 2014, is rumored to be the foundation for a new entry, which would mean that development could be more streamlined, and thus the game could release sooner than expected. They can also now expand the roster and features through DLC, something that the team has already experimented with in the past. Nintendo announcing such a big game so close to its release would not be strange, it's actually something Nintendo does often. We have no idea what they are planning to release as their big 2018 title, and their online service has been delayed to late 2018, so this could very easily be it.

I'm going to argue for two third party games that I think will be announced:

  • Dark Souls
  • GTA5

Some games, likely

Bayonetta 1 and 2 will get a mention. I'd expect more Kirby and Yoshi for sure. I'd also guess a port of DKC:R and Tropical Freeze.

Dark Souls Trilogy and Tales of Berseria from Bandai Namco.

I'm honestly convinced at this point that Pikmin 4 is not actually a thing and Miyamoto was just referring to Hey Pikmin

More $60 shitty-ass ports of games that are available on other platforms for $5 or even free.

Metroid Prime 4 would be fantastic. Some third party announcements.

If they announce GTA 5 they should market the hell out of it. "Play GTA 5 anywhere you want" I believe it would sell very successfully on the Switch, leaving a impact on the third party developers

I just want to hear confirmation that they are working on an Animal Crossing. Even if it doesn't come out this year, I just want to hear something!

At least a mention of Smash Bros.
2D Mario
Animal Crossing
Prime 4
Kirby SA
Yoshi
Retro's new game
Bayonetta 3
Fire Emblem

I think at least 5 of these will happen.

Well, they marketed Skyrim really well, so I imagine they will push GTA5 a whole lot, too.

Of revealed first party projects, Kirby and Yoshi will probably get a push.

Of unrevealed first party projects, Fire Emblem Switch seems like the safest bet. I could also see Metroid Prime 4 getting a reveal. Animal Crossing I could see happening as well. Smash Bros I would call a maybe, because I'm really uncertain what direction they're going to go in with that game. I don't think we'll see Pokemon. Pokemon X/Y and Sun and Moon were both revealed in their own events. I expect the same to happen with Pokemon Switch.

Dark Souls, Persona and GTA V seem like very possible third party titles.

GTAV has to happen.

But they'd probably save it for E3 unless it's coming out soon, which is a possibility.

For January Direct I expect more first party announcements. To be honest the game I want the most is #FE. Didn't get to play it on Wii U.

I'm going to repost what I said in the Nintendo First-Party thread

Okay, I'll bite with some oddly specific guesses to keep things interesting.

January Direct. More from stuff we've already seen. Yoshi. Kirby. Octopath. Kirby looks surprisingly good but doesn't attract any new converts while Yoshi is mostly met with a shrug. Fire Emblem is properly rolled out and has impressive production values, the pandering is toned down a bit from Fates but isn't going to please anyone who thinks Awakening ruined the franchise. Fully voiced, English voice acting is a step up from Zelda and Xenoblade but isn't anything that's going to win awards. We get just enough footage of Metroid to confirm that it exists, but not enough to quell endless internet debates about how exactly it's going to turn out.

Some talk about UI and QOL updates for the system. Netflix is coming etc. Badge Arcade is coming to the Switch, wow!

Indies and third parties. GTAV for Switch is unveiled with much pomp and circumstance but none of this is first party so I'm not gonna spend time speculating on what else could be coming.

New Mario Party. It doesn't look great. The Warioware/Rhythm Heaven team shows up with one of the promised new Ips that showcase the joycons. It gets a much warmer response than 1-2 Switch but ends up selling less because it missed launch.

EAD 5 makes a surprise appearance with ExciteTank! - an out of left field Nintendo take on the combat simulator. It becomes the butt of jokes about Nintendo's 2018 output but comes out to pretty decent reviews and response, immediately going to sell only like 250,000 copies. There's one crazy gif that comes out of it that gets reposted to "underrated Nintendo games" threads for years to come.

The "one more thing" is Smash. It's called "Super Smash Brothers Tussle" or something but is basically an expanded Smash 4 port with all characters returning, 3ds and Wii U stages, a new but not particularly impressive single player component, and like 7-8 new characters at launch with the promise of DLC for at least the next couple of years. The first new characters showcased are Inkling and a surprise character from a Western developer.

That's it for January. Animal Crossing gets revealed at a random direct and releases within a year. We don't get any Wii U ports beyond Bayonetta. We do get a Skyward Sword HD, but not from Grezzo. Retro announces their new game at E3, it's a big budget entry into a genre under-served on Nintendo hardware but it's also a stylized E-rated title so opinions run the gambit. 2019. Metroid gets a full trailer and it looks really good but there's one weird thing about it that leads to a 30-page despair thread. 2019 as well. There's a new 2D Mario that drops the "New" series and it looks pretty fucking great. 2018. Pokemon misses 2018 despite strong internal efforts but they do release a new Mystery Dungeon or whatever. Pikmin 4 is still missing, somehow.

This is more optimistic than I'd usually be but the recent 20 mil internal forecast makes me think they have to be pretty confident about their line up. I could easily see one of Smash, Animal Crossing or 2D Mario not making it if they're betting on Pokemon showing up or they're more confident with their new quirky ips than they have any right to be. Thank you for reading my fanfiction.

Some possibilities...
-Rabbids story DLC since it comes in January
-Release date reveals and gameplay reels for already announced titles
-New IP(s)
-Exclusive third party game(s)
-Maybe just maybe.....Metroid Prime 4

I don't think you'll get Dark Souls remastered announced at the event. I'd imagine since it's rumor to come to all current consoles that Bamco would announce it themselves.

Vern (who leaked LA Noir for Switch and the exact date of the fall direct) mentioned that he was talking to someone from Rockstar and they mentioned they had another port in the works for the Switch and it was "what you'd expect" or something the that effect. So, Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis confirmed, basically.
