https://www.resetera.com/threads/how-much-am-i-spending-on-video-games-2019-edition.90598/

Hello Folks this is a thread for people who want to keep track of their video game spendings.

Everything you spent on videogames from January 1 2018 to ... infinite thread.
Items which counts towards your video game spendings.
- Games digital or physical.
- DLC, season passes and other digital game related stuff.
- Special and Collectors Editions.
- Gaming accessoires controllers, Headsets etc.
- Strategy Guides and PDFs.
- Consoles or PC gaming setup.
- Amiibo's and NFCs or other stuff which you can transfer into your game.
- A Happy Meal with Amiibo's or similair things.
- Selling a game counts as cash so keep track of those too.

Which items don't count towards video game spendings.
- Merchandise like Vinyl, Cups, Tshirts and other items which are not part of a Special or Collectors Edition.
- No Software such as Word.
- Game related books wich is not falling under the category of a Strategy Guide.

This thread is about knowing your spending habit and if we manage to keep this thread going for a few years you can see which months you spend more on games then previous months.

When you buy a game or sell one you can post that in here, but also keep a list of it in one of your posts.

To give you all an example this was how my list looked like for 2017.

It would take forever to note down every single game/accessory and console that i bought this year, but for sure $3000-$3500 (i bought a new PC rig).

Edit: I'll update this post later with all the details once i find the time. Would be interesting to see just how much i accumulate in spending for the next few years.

Been doing this since 2014, my annual spendings software hardware combined

2014: 570$

2015: 89$

2016: 420$

2017: 812$

My goal for 2018 is actually 0$ since I spent over budget 2017 and I have a backlog to dig in to :) well be hard always get the itch to buy some good second hand deal or digital discount deal..

I'm too scared to face the truth honestly :p
Even if I try to buy only the games I really want I think I always end up around 2k€ each year. I also often buy one very expensive product (console or accessory) each year so the total rises quickly. But sure, I'll keep track of it. I think I'm going to regret this in a month or two though :)

January 2018 :
- Guidebook for Zelda BOTW : 20€
- Monster Hunter World (pre order) : 70€ (it probably be lower on the release day, no idea why it still at that price on amazon)
- Dragon Ball Fighters Z (pre order) : 55€

And Yakuza 6 CE pre ordered for 90€ ( for march 2018)

... I'm already regretting this.

Yakuza 6 The Song of Life After Hours Premium Edition [PS4] €25,- Pre-Order

Wait what :o 25€ for the CE? Or is it just a advance for pre ordering?

Thats the advance for pre order I did in 2017 so I won't count that into 2018.

If the price remains 90 euro in 2018 and the game comes out it means 90 - 25 = 65 euro paid in 2018. So you have to reflect the amount remaining for this year. Also if you have any coupon or discount codes then you have to reflect the remaing amount too. I have a discount coupon of 15 so I will only pay 50 euro for Yakuza CE

One of my new year's resolutions is to not purchase anything game related all year unless a Switch revision comes out(doubt it)

I have enough amazon and gamestop credit from selling and trading stuff to cover tlou2, spiderman, death stranding and a random nintendo game(animal crossing or zelda wii u ports hopefully) for the year. if any, besides spiderman, come out this year

My backlog is so big i need to cut it down

In 2017 it was in the 900€ range, this year I should be trying to hold myself and only buy around 500-600€.
But of course, if I manage I'll just rebuy a Switch, or get a Xbox one X.

Probably around £2k, maybe a little more.

I don't drink and seeing what my buddies waste on booze, I never fret about gaming. Plus, go physical and it has a resale value.

Software
PS4 - $1200
Switch - $550
Xbox - $20

Hardware
PS4 Pro - $420
Switch + extra joycons + case - $400
Amiibos etc - $80

Total spent about $2670

Total gained by selling OG PS4, couple of old 3DSs and games - about $500. So final expenditure is about $2200.

Keeping track of my gaming expenses would probably be a good idea.

If I were to give a rough estimate for 2017, it would probably be around 1000€. I bought a Switch, (that's 300ish), 1 game per month (let's say~50ish each) on average, and some accessories.

I will try this, sure :)

In 2017 I spent way too much. A PS4 Pro, a Switch with Pro controller, a 55 inch KS8000 4K TV (mainly for gaming so I include it) and a bunch of software. I think I bought 30 games last year.

In 2018 I've already fucked up because I spily coffee over my laptop which means I just bought a new one, so that's 12 000 NOK (about 1,5K USD) down the drain. Don't know whether to count it though, because it is not just for gaming.

EDIT:
January:
119 kr - Cuphead (PC)
91 kr - What Remains of Edith Finch (PC)
639 kr - Monster Hunter World (digital)
----
Total Jan:
849 kr
Year total so far:
849 kr

I didn't really buy many game this year. I've spent like $2700 though. Because I got a gaming laptop. I travel too much for a desktop now.

Nioh ps4 $60
For Honor pc $40
Andromeda pc $60
Nier ps4 $60
Destiny 2 ps4/pc $140
Assassins Creed Origins pc $45
Tekken 7 ps4 $60
Laptop $2200
SSD $120

Total $2685

For 2018 I'll probably only spend a few hundred, since I'm not planning on getting any new hardware.

So far I only have Yakuza 6 preordered for $60 and a $20 psn card

Great thread, I wanted to make a list with my gaming expenses anyway since I have the feeling I would be shocked to discover how much actually spend each month.

2017:
An estimated €1000 sounds about right, maybe I will take a detailed look into that later.
The goal for the new year is to think more about what and WHEN to buy, as the bulk of this sum comes from either brand new games or games I at the moment didn't have the time to play and went straight to the backlog.
So my goal is to spend a max of €300 on gaming in 2018.

January 2018:

Evil Within 2 [PS4] €25

Easily over 1000€ on Switch alone. Bought some games for other platforms too but mostly discounted. SNES Mini too, no PC hardware this year, no other new console. I don't have exact numbers but would guess around 1800€ +/-

Normally I sell a lot more games, pretty much all that I've finished. But this year
1) bought too many games that I did not get to play, so couldn't sell
2) couldn't resist digital sales
3) bought games I didn't really need, since I had played them or had to desire to get back to just yet (dying light, uncharted, borderlands, witcher 3 goty, star wars season pass, call of duty, bf1)

Only a few upcoming games I plan on buying this year:

Fire Emblem
Monster Hunter World (PC)
Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition
Ni No Kuni 2.

Gotta clear out some 2017 backlog first. Hopefully Super Mario Odyssey, Nier Automata, and Elex go down to prices I feel comfortable with.

I write it down in my notebook, but I'm also in for this thread, I'd like to spend less, but also end up with more games, as I have a terrible habit of trading stuff in only to be buy it back, so I'm hoping to do that a lot less this year.

I'm already keeping track of this, so I might as well share. 2017 was actually a really good year for me with the least money spent on video games since 2007 (when I actually made more money back than i spent). There's not really a ton of stuff coming out in 2018 that I'm interested in, so maybe that fact together with this thread can help me cut down even further on video game spending!

2017
January

Grand Theft Auto V - PS4 - €20

August
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare - PS4 - €5

September
Destiny 2 - PS4 - €0 (gift)

October
Divinity: Original Sin - PS4 - €11
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year Edition - PS4 - €18
WipeOut Omega Collection - PS4 - €19

November
Mass Effect: Andromeda - PS4 - €10

December
Dishonored 2 - PS4 - €10
Prey - PS4 - €10

Total: €103

To be honest, didn't really buy anything that I wound up regretting this year. I haven't played a ton of Divinity yet, but what I have played so far was promising. GTA V was the most expensive pick up, but I really wanted to play it straight away.. and I haven't really seen it much cheaper since then either.

I built a new PC and got a Switch. Bought Games for both as well as PS4. So likely about £5,000 all together.

Worth it.

PC 14.99
PS4 Hardware 265.78
PS4 Games 231.74
Switch Hardware 449.93
Switch Games 316.96

Enhanced Steam has a nice feature where it shows you much you have spent on your account (Just go the Account details).
I use it when I feel I'm too happy, and need to see something depressing.

This year? 4-5k lol, yup overkill i know i buy too many games but luckily one of my new year resolutions is to heavily scale that down and only buy games day 1 if i can/want truly play em and buy others later in sales. (bought stuff: 4k tv like 50+ games, 70 amiibo, Switch, Splatoon tshirts from japan, bought some old games i missed playig in my teenage years)

But this year will be around 2k aswell alone without buying videogames since i have a few videogame tattoo's planned and those aint cheap. So with videogames included it will probably be like 2500-3k but i won't buy many since i will try to clear my backlog.

I only will really buy Monster Hunter Worlds, Red Dead 2, Nintendo's upcoming games, indies on switch and Spiderman and dragon quest builder 1 and Kingdom Hearts 3. And get the rest like god of war 4 and more later in a sale since sony games and third party tend to go down in price fairly quickly these days on psn and retail wise. This is 2018 wise ofcourse.

Maybe I should try doing this.

I'd suspect last year was ~$2500... Oculus+Touch for $600 (March), like 100 VR games, Switch and a few games, lots of PC games, a handful of PS4 games. extra 2TB HDD...

I've been getting way better with this over the past couple years.

Somewhere along the line I decided to stop being a Steam Collector but rather a Steam Player, opting to only make purchases that I was willing to start playing immediately. It's culled my buying habits dramatically, esp. during big Steam sales.

For example, this season I only picked up two games. Dream Daddy and Night in the Woods.

Feels good, mang.

I'll have to do some calculations, thankfully 2017 will be MUCH better than 2016 was with the 1-2 punch of PS4 Pro and PSVR, plus the preorder of the Platinum headset

Let's see, last year I spent (including trading/selling stuff and rebuying it because I am an idiot)

January

- 25 (Gamestop, I didn't specify what it was and I don't recall off the top of my head)
- 30 (Switch deposit)
- 68.50 (Cex, didn't specify exactly what that was either, but it would have been video games)
- 20 (Switch deposit)
- 5.60 (Super Mario World on 3DS VC)
- 5 (Gamestop, unspecified again)

February

- 49.70 (Overwatch, which I sold not soon after buying it for 48, so thats a 1.70 loss already)
- 50 (Switch deposit)
- 40 (Switch deposit)
- 7 (PS+)
- 25 (PS3 console I bought pre owned)
- 26 (Gamestop, doesn't say what again but I'm gonna say it was switch related)
- 20 (Pokemon game, doesn't say which one)
- 40 (Bought a gamecube for 40, sold it for like 50 thats 10 quid profit)
- 13 (3DS game)
- 25 (The Last Of Us PS4, sold this for like 18 or so, thats a 7 quid loss)
- 46 (Horizon ZD on amazon, sold it pretty soon after for like 45 or something so thats a quid loss)

March

- 100 (Switch related, since I was paying off the console and Zelda at the same time)
- 19 (Zelda BOTW deposit)
- 40 (DS games is what I've written down, can't remember what it was)
- 35 (Gamestop, again haven't been specific, definitely sold them though)
- 36.40 (I've written games, and not specified what it was, very annoying I did that)

April

- 385 (Nintendo Switch + Zelda, since I sold my switch from launch day to cex with Zelda for 30 quid profit or something, then changed my mind and bought another)
- 20 (Gamestop, I really need to be more specific)
- 20 (Gamestop, and again)
- 20 (Bravely Second Special Edition, sold that for... 4 quid profit I think? Not much anyway)
- 25 (Shovel Knight on switch)
- 10 (Mario Kart Switch, I either traded stuff in or had credit on my Gamestop card so it was only a tenner in cash to pay)
- 5 (Nintendo is what I've written down, but I'm almost certain thats Kamiko off the e-shop)
- 40 (Mario Kart, so I sold the one I got from Gamestop, then rebought it cos I'm an idiot with these things)
- 73 (Games, no fucking idea what that was, but I definitely traded them in or sold them since I don't have them now)

May

- 30 (I've written Switch, but don't remember what it was, or if I'd sold the second switch console by then. I feel like I had done to pay a bill or something)
- 44 (Horizon ZD)
- 32 (Argos, I think that was Kingdom Hearts 1.5/2.5 remastered.
- 5 (Gamestop)
- 20 (Switch, no idea what that is)
- 9 (it says playstation, so it'll be something off the PS store, don't remember what)
- 10 (3DS e-shop, I think it would have been one of the Pokemon VC games)
- 10.50 (Game, again I didn't specify what)
- 44 (Video games is what I've written, and now I'm really annoyed with myself I was so vague, and I would have sold it/traded it in)
- 34 (Argos, doesn't say what, but it would have been video game related, and I would have sold it/traded it in)

June

- 80 (Switch, no idea what that was, don't recall)
- 22 (Cex something video game related)
- 27 (Horizon ZD, christ almighty)
- 7.50 (Nintendo, something e-shop related probably)
- 5 (deposit on a SNES classic)

July

- 200 (Switch, wow I did not realise before looking over the book how badly I fucked my finances up with this buying and selling shit)
- 34.27 (Final Fantasy 12 on PS4)
- 25 (Gravity Rush 2)
- 12 (Mighty No 9, worth pointing out here I gave 120 quid to the kickstarter of this and never received any of my backer rewards)
- 11 (The World Ends With You on DS, this was a really good bargain that I fucked up by trading it in of course)

August

- 5.30 (2DS case. I did in fact get a 2DS at this point through trading stuff in, but sold it like 3 weeks later)
- 1 (Metroid? No idea what I bought for a quid that was Metroid related)
- 30 (Pokemon game + Luigi's Mansion 2 on 3DS. I bought these second hand off a bloke online, and I would have sold it/traded it in)
- 322 (Nintendo Switch, I have a serious issue)
- 7 (Splatoon, Trade in!)
- 10 (Switch case)
- 270 (This was... Metroid samus returns special edition and that special edition, and I sold both of them. Also paid for them early did I? I don't remember)
- 44 (Mario rabbids game, and I would have sold it/traded it in)

There's a bit missing here, but at some point September!

- 40 (Bravely default)
- 27.21 (Rayman Legends on switch, and I would have sold it/traded it in)
- 22.75 (unspecified Nintendo purchase)
- 91 (SNES classic)
- 10 (Advance Wars DS)
- 7 (Unspecified Nintendo purchase)
- 15 (Gamestop)
- 7.90 (PS+ to play destiny 2 I think?)

At some point October!

- 45 (Destiny 2, and I would have sold it/traded it in)
- 14 (Stardew Valley, lucky you can't trade digital stuff in!)
- 18 (Axiom Verge)
- 54 (Argos, don't remember)
- 6 (Argos, this was Deus Ex PS4)
- 21.23 (Final Fantasy 12, and I would have sold it/traded it in)
- 41.67 (Game, don't know what it was, and I would have sold it/traded it in)
- 30 (Bioshock collection, and I would have sold it/traded it in)
- 440 (PS4 pro. I'd just sold my old one for some unspecified reason. I think I needed to pay a bill)

November happened.

- 290 (Switch, I have a problem)
- 50 (Call of duty WW2, and I would have sold it/traded it in)
- 170 (2DS, the poke ball one. I actually kept this one)
- 35 (Sonic Forces, I traded this in but I finished it and its trash so I'm ok with it)
- 50 (Doom Switch, and I would have sold it/traded it in)
- 29 (Skyrim Switch, traded it for it, still have it!)
- 82 (Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon fan edition thing, and I would have sold it/traded it in)
- 45 (LA Noire Switch, definitely traded it in)
- 20 (Gravity Rush 2, kept it)
- 20 (Wolfenstein 2 on PS4, traded it in)
- 20 (Nioh, traded it)
- 20 (Uncharted Lost Legacy, traded it in)
- 20 (Knack 2, traded it in)
- 10 (Mass Effect Andromeda, traded it in)
- 24 (I am Setsuna, digital can't be traded it in!)
- 17 (The Last Of Us, kept it)
- 20 (Mario, I think it was Mario Switch)

December at last

- 20 (Final Fantasy 12)
- 37 (Xenoblade on Switch, didn't like it so I was happy to trade it)
- 31 (Puyo Puyo Tetris)
- 23 (Bioshock collection, god I suck)
- 20 (Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice)
- 7 (Super Mario Bros on switch)
- 8 (Patapon on PS4)
- 20 (Resident Evil Revelations on switch)

I think thats it. Gonna work on not doing this in 2018.

Bought most games at launch as a physical version. Calculated everything (incl. 4 PSN cards, PS VR and a 4 terabyte game drive) and come to:
CHF2027, that's around $2080.

Trying to spend less in 2018.

this year I've set myself the goal of buying zero games until my (quite frankly) insane backlog is worked on..

I've too many games to even worry about anything coming out this year! :)

let' see how I do...

I've been keeping track of my gaming spending this past year after getting the idea of doing so from reading the 2016 version of this thread from a year back. I spent £337.59 in total and this has been one my busiest gaming years ever.

£53.14 of that total was on PS+ subscriptions alone. The only games I spent full price to buy at Day 1 prices were Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Echoes.

Oh my god, I spend way too much on video games. But let's try this for the upcoming year:

2018
January

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds - 19,99
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy - 26,99 €
Forza Horizon 3 Expansion Pass - 10,49 €
Warframe Starter Set - 20,48 €
TOTAL 77,95 €

I actually have a spreadsheet for this because I am a nerd. Only includes physical, preordered games, but I don't buy many digital anyway. Way under $50 total for digital for the year.

Games I preordered. All with 20% off with Prime (except for DQ11 which was imported):
January 20 3DS Dragon Quest VIII- Kept
January 24 PS4 Yakuza 0- Kept
March 7 PS4 Atelier Firis- Resold
April 4 PS4 Persona 5- Kept
April 25 PS4 Dragon Quest Heroes II- Kept
July 28 3DS Miitopia- Resold
July 29 PS4J Dragon Quest XI- Kept
August 29 PS4 Yakuza Kiwami- Kept
August 29 Switch Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle- Resold
December 1 Switch Xenoblade 2- Resold

I also got Just Dance 2018 Switch for $29.99 on Black Friday and a Switch console in June-ish.

I also sold a ton of old games that were just lying around. Counting those, I probably was close to break even on net gaming purchases/sales for the year, or at the very least under $100 net. I really don't spend a whole lot anymore. Mostly replay older games.

Great idea! Like many others I had a bit of a blowout in 2017 with the Switch coming out, accessories to be bought and a tonne of games picked up retail and digitally.

I have four games pre-ordered through the end of February, but after that I'm hoping to stick to one a month (priority going to Nintendo 1st party and anything Mega Man related for switch), don't plan on picking up any hardware, and since I never buy gaming-related merch that shouldn't be an issue (although I do plan to pick up the ARMS graphic novel).

Will edit the post to let you know how I get on, and look forward to seeing others' updates.

January update:

Total: £94
Lost Sphear NS physical £40
Axiom Verge NS physical £25
Final Fantasy NES cart £25
Oxenfree NS Eshop £4

Three games I plan to get in February: Bayonetta 2 NS, Dragon Quest Builders NS, and Radiant Historia 3DS

I remember when IGN lists used to include prices of games, so you could add your collection and it would track the average sale price for you. Pretty neat feature.

Anyway, I don't have time, or the memory to do this, but I know I used to spend about £4,000 - 6,000 a year, but I spend a lot less now. Only since I started working full time though.

I use mint to track all my purchases, last year was about $1200 but that was higher than normal with the Switch purchase. Aiming to stay well under that this year.

I might participate in this though, nothing so far this year.

I spent around 150€ this year, mostly surviving on ~10€ games. My biggest purchase was NieR Automata at 40€ and Stormblood at 35€.

Notable games : Metro bundle for 8€, Evil Within for 10€, Romancing SaGa 2 for 20€
