I failed to reach 52 this year. It was my first time trying though, so better luck to myself next time!

Main Post
Games 36-40:
36. Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage (Reignited Trilogy) | Dec 13 | 7:08hrs | rating: 2.5/5
HwfVIIJ.jpg

Collect new trinkets to save the world and get back home.

- GAMEPLAY: Same as the first game, but this time you gradually get new abilities, such as swimming and climbing ladders. It makes for a bit more variation, but is mostly annoying that you have to backtrack once you've obtained them to 100% the levels. That's a recurring theme in general; most side-missions are back-tracky and tedious this time around, and the mini-games are not fun.
- AUDIOVISUALLY: Same as the previous game; it's amazing how close to CGI they look compared to the originals, and I feel like we're taking the progress for granted. Musically it sounds good, but it's oh, so unmemorable.
- STORY/PRESENTATION: A whole lot more cut-scenes before and after each level, which may be entertaining for kids but a complete time waster for me. Luckily you can skip them. There are only three hub worlds this time, and the sense of progress was better in the first game.

You've got more moves, more varied missions, and an actual reason to collect the gems this time. But it's also more tedious and the additions aren't fun. Also, it's just too similar to the first game, which made me tired of it more quickly.

37. Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon (Reignited Trilogy) | Dec 16 | 6:29hrs | rating: 2/5
oVg5bXG.jpg

This time you collect dragon eggs that a crocodile witch has stolen.

- GAMEPLAY: Same as before, but all too often you play horribly controlled mini-games or as Spyro's shitty friends. I skip way more missions than before. Also more bugs and surprising inconsistencies, like "you can swim in that water, but in this water you insta-die", and invisible walls galore.
- AUDIOVISUALLY: Same, but there are more visual bugs than before, like clipping and one-frame cuts between scenes. I get the sense that they didn't polish this final game as much as the rest of the trilogy remake.
- STORY/PRESENTATION: No more random comedic cut-scenes, and instead they're focusing on advancing a story, with some light character development. Definitely the best plot of the trilogy.

I don't know what the consensus is about these games, but Spyro 1 was enjoyable enough for me to 100%, but this game has way too much crap and I just wanted to do the bare minimum; the stuff that was actually fun, because the core gameplay still is. I wouldn't recommend this one unless you really thirst for more Spyro.

38. The Touryst | Dec 28 | 5:35hrs | rating: 2.5/5
vXb4Y5A.jpg

Explore a bunch of squarey tourist islands and solve puzzles.

- GAMEPLAY: Although there's a large variation of side-quests/mini-games, they're all extremely simple and short, and the "dungeons" are only a couple of rooms when they could have been 10 without getting boring. The most meaty part is an optional mine exploring game, which is fine but just nothing special. It's a very light game.
- AUDIOVISUALLY: The pixelated 3D visuals are quite special, but I'm not a huge fan except for the nice lighting. The audio is atmospheric, mostly sound of waves, but it's effective.
- STORY/PRESENTATION: It's a charming presentation and the main mystery is nice but light. My take-away really is that the game has too little of it. Like a Zelda game if you strip away all enemies and 90% of its content.

I did found the game fun enough in a sort of relaxing way. Like, you do some arcade games, you make 35 lift ups, canoe a little. But its core needed to be at least twice as meaty to make a bigger impression on me.

39. Kirby's Dream Course | Dec 29 | 3:37hrs | rating: 3/5
zx71VoU.jpg

I started this one up randomly in the SNES Switch app, and had no idea it's a Kirby themed golf game, and also, that it's fun!

- GAMEPLAY: You choose between regular shot or chip, aim and go for the correct strength, like any golf game. There is a tutorial in the menu but I didn't see it, so I only gradually learned that you can also bounce to get extra distance, and even steal your opponents' abilities and activate while you're in motion. At first I had fun playing through the courses with bad scores, but upon returning to them, I realized it also works like a puzzle game, using all your abilities to get a hole in one. Depth!
- AUDIOVISUALLY: Standard isometric pixel graphics that do their job. Music is quite nice but nothing special.
- STORY/PRESENTATION: You travel through eight colorful worlds for who knows why.
- MULTIPLAYER: There's a VS mode, but it didn't quite work for us, since you kind of collaborate too in order to kill the enemies. I want to do it by myself! While competing.

I like golf games, and this is a very original take on the genre. As an adventure, it feels way short though, and although 64 courses is a lot as a golf game, it doesn't give me the itch to replay to improve the scores.

40. Shovel Knight: King of Cards | Dec 30 | 6:19hrs | rating: 3/5
pK92UUn.jpg

Play as the King Knight through a whole bunch of shorter side-scrolling levels and participate in the card game Joustus.

- GAMEPLAY: The mechanics are fresh and clever, as you dash into enemies or walls to create a spin attack you can use on other enemies and objects. The card game is also initially fun, but it lost my interest pretty fast.
- AUDIOVISUALLY: Honestly I hate these brownish pixel visuals. Most of it looks like mud. The music on the other hand is spectacular, some of the best in the medium!
- STORY/PRESENTATION: There's a lot of humoristic dialog, but it's not something that interests me. You've got a world map with levels on them, and to be honest it just feels too formulaic, too "been there done that".
- MULTIPLAYER: Unfortunately you can't play the adventure in co-op like you can in the original campaign, but there is a separate "Showdown" released, which is a Smash Bros light. We tried one round, but it just felt messy. Might as well play Smash.

The original Shovel Knight didn't actually do much for me. It felt too safe, too retro, not surprising enough. I might prefer King of Cards in some ways, as the levels are shorter and it feels more focused, and especially the later levels are quite creative. The visuals and the sameness bring it down for me. Despite the nifty mechanics, it screams "old".

For my final update for the year, December takes me up to 73 games beaten, a little less than last year but one up from 72 in 2017. Happy New Year everyone!

Master post here

Luigis-Mansion3.jpg

67. Luigi's Mansion 3 (Switch) - 11 December 2019
Completed with all gems collected, all boos caught and the great majority of achievements unlocked. Luigi's Mansion 3 is a really fun and charming game, very much doing justice to the series on Switch. While for the most part fairly low in difficulty, the puzzle design is imaginative and there's an incredibly impressive level of detail and variety throughout the 'mansion' (this time, a hotel) - each of the 15+ floors has its own theme, from the relatively mundane (guest rooms, shops and dining areas) through to a movie studio, a pirate ship (complete with ocean!) and Egyptian-style tomb. Additional longevity comes from searching for sets of gems (often requiring further puzzle-solving) and hidden Boos, and there's even a decent multi-player mode.

header.jpg

68. The Outer Worlds (Xbox One - Game Pass) - 12 December 2019
Completed with 1,000/1,000 GamerScore (48/48 achievements unlocked). It's been a little while since I got properly stuck into an RPG, and The Outer Worlds has been an excellent way to come back to a genre which is among my favourites. The main story questline is fairly short compared to many, but there's still a lot of content here when optional side missions are taken into account. The sci-fi world in which the game is set is impressively well-realised (not that I'd expect anything less from Obsidian), with believable characters and factions, and a plot that feels meaningful and satisfying. The gameplay is similarly strong, with a decent variety of options available for character development; it's particularly nice to see that a non-combat focus is very much viable, with dialog or stealth-skill focused solutions to most quests.

header.jpg

69. Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope (Switch) - 15 December 2019
Standard playthrough complete with all upgrades and collectibles; majority of in-game 'feats' unlocked. Strictly this is a re-completion, as I originally played through the original Shovel Knight campaign on Wii U, but many years ago - and as I've not yet played any of later campaigns, the release of King of Cards seemed an apt time to come back to the collection, starting here before moving on to the other knights. The gameplay is as enjoyable as ever, with tight controls, great level design and satisfying secrets, making the game overall a fitting tribute to the 'retro' series that inspired it.

CoD-MW.jpg

70. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) (PS4) - 18 December 2019
Platinum trophy earned, including complete playthrough on Veteran difficulty. A return to form for this biggest of franchises, this 're-imagining' of the events of the first Modern Warfare brings back the campaign gameplay that was disappointingly missing from Black Ops IIII - and does so resoundingly well, with well-realised characters and well-built scenarios, with more than we've seen recently on the stealthy special forces gameplay that I generally find much more enjoyable and satisfying than larger, more chaotic firefights. I'm yet to make much time for the multiplayer, as that's not usually what I play the Call fo Duty games for, but I'll probably dip a little in from time to time - from what little I've played so far there's a great selection of modes and satisfying gunplay.

header.jpg

71. Life is Strange 2 - Episode 5: Wolves (Xbox One - Game Pass) - 20 December 2019
Completed with 100% of achievements unlocked (240/240 GS). Another fairly short episode to close out the season, but overally a step up from episode 4's rather contrived events. Some very heartfelt scenes allow some final development to the relationship between the Diaz brothers and, while I'm not convinced that the events of the rest of the game alter the nuances of ending all that much aside from the two polar opposites from the final choice, overall it comes to a conclusion that feels fitting. That's about as much as I can say without going into spoilers, but I look forward to seeing what comes next from DONTNOD.

header.jpg

72. Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (Switch) - 26 December 2019
100% in-game completion rating. A beautiful, excellently designed Metroidvania, with a focus on platforming gameplay and simple but enjoyable and varied puzzle-solving, while still evoking the satisfaction inherent in exploring and discovering the secrets of a well-realised world. Shifting between different animal forms is a creative mechanic for learning new combat and traversal skills and, while the early parts of the game feel a little restrictive, with a little persistence this soon opens up.

header.jpg

73. Wandersong (Switch) - 29 December 2019
Complete playthrough; also 100% of achievements unlocked on Xbox One and Steam for good measure. A charming and uplifting puzzle adventure, based around the theme of singing/music in place of combat and to solve puzzles. This works impressively well, but the game really excels in the character development and emotion that it achieves from such simple building-blocks. A perfect way to see out a year that's certainly had its fair share of ups and downs in reality!

...and here's my last update. Just came in at 100. Will probably never do this many again but it's cool to have done it once.

Here's to playing some good stuff in 2020.

---

fatyoshi- 100/52 Games (61 first playthroughs, 39 replays)

GdZLbVq.png

Game 91 ā€“ Blackwell Convergence (PC) ā€“ 1 hour, 48 minutes ā€“ 3.5/5

This is where the Blackwell series truly starts to come into its own, in my opinion. The gameplay systems are more solid from here on out in addition to the development of the casts and overall universe.

There's also the incredible rainy atmosphere throughout. I'm always here for that.

kyTyVl5.png

Game 92 ā€“ Blackwell Deception (PC) ā€“ 2 hours, 6 minutes ā€“ 3.5/5

A nice penultimate episode. The game lays some solid groundwork for the narrative that's wrapped up in the final entry.
I really enjoyed some of the settings in this game in comparison to the other games. The opening on the boat in addition to the night club were nice ways to switch things up.

Just one more game to go for the series replay.

22aNjwi.png

Game 93 ā€“ Life is Strange 2 (PC) ā€“ 19 hours, 24 minutes ā€“ 4.5/5

I am morbidly depressed.

My favorite of the Life is Strange games released so far. This is the most investment I've found in a game in a really long time. Thank you, Dontnod.

oo52cAB.png

Game 94 ā€“ Shadows of the Damned (360) ā€“ 12 hours ā€“ 3/5

I knew this game was divisive and for many didn't live up to expectations for a game with so many legends (Akira Yamaoka, Mikami, and Suda in one game could've been the most monumental game I ever played in my life) behind it but I wanted to believe I'd be different. For the first half of the game or so I wasn't sure what the issue was, the gameplay isn't anything particularly special and it's pretty repetitive but it's nothing that the incredible soundtrack, voice acting, and dialogue couldn't overtake. Garcia is incredible and the love of my life.

Like any other Mikami game I've played, the cracks started to show in the mid or late portion of the game. Things started to get a bit messy with some of the boss encounters being less than great. Lots of messy hit boxes that rely on context sensitive moments where damage can be dealt out while your health is being drained adds up to a frustrating experience. Some of them went on for what felt like ages on the normal difficulty so I couldn't even imagine on hard. Regardless, I was still enjoying my time up until this point.

The last straw of sorts was Act 4. The pacing all but screeches to a halt as we end up with a series of levels featuring repetitive gimmicks and three 2D turret/arcade shooter sections to top things off. I understand this is a thing with a lot of Suda games but I've never seen it be so prevalent and invasive in the other games. It was cute/mildly charming the first time even if the mechanics were bad, I was irritated the second time, and then the third time made me consider quitting the game if I wasn't close to being finished.

I'm glad I stuck around because I wanted to finish the story off and the gameplay did mostly improve to an at least acceptable state. The final bosses left a bit to be desired but I'll take it over more turret sections or chase sequences.

It's a shame this game had such a troublesome development period. I'm not exactly surprised it did with EA publishing but I'm not sure what anyone involved in this on either end was expecting of each other? I'm glad the game exists even in this not ideal form. One of the most unique and memorable games of its gen and I'd love to see it get a remaster/port someday.

S2SFpe2.png

Game 95 ā€“ SUPERHOT (XB1) ā€“ 2 hours ā€“ 3.5/5

Fantastic concept somewhat let down by a main story that drags a bit. Once you get going and get to some of the later levels or unlock the bulk of the games content you're set.

Definitely gonna be coming back to this for a long time in short bursts.

kz7V2tF.png

Game 96 ā€“ Blackwell Epiphany (PC) ā€“ 3 hours, 18 minutes ā€“ 4/5

A fantastic send off to the series. The characters are wrapped up nicely.

Probably my second favorite Wadjet Eye game behind Unavowed.

TkWm6OS.png

Game 97 ā€“ Afterparty (XB1) ā€“ ~6 hours ā€“ 3.5/5

Another great game from Night School Studio. Not quite as solid as Oxenfree but I liked it a lot, still.

Absolutely loved the characters and setting. This is one of my favorite games in a long time general concept wise.

The performance on my Xbox One S was really rough at times which got distracting. I'm hoping to return to this for more endings on PC in the future.

BUIVAUp.png

Game 98 ā€“ A Short Hike (PC) ā€“ 1 hour, 42 minutes ā€“ 3.5/5

I'm breaking down, please be quiet.

QPPltHJ.png

Game 99 ā€“ Untitled Goose Game (XB1) - ~3 hours ā€“ 3.5/5

The most joyful game experience I had in 2019.

Not sure it has much replay value (I already wanted to leave the more to do list stuff for further off in the future) but the main game content was nice.

Loved snatching things then running around honking wildly. <3

Game 100 - Lone Survivor: Director's Cut (PS4) - 2 hours, 5 minutes - 4/5

Still one of my favorite horror games. Played through on expert mode with the Blue ending.

Look forward to starting afresh once more!

Not sure I'll be anywhere close to 52 this year but hey, at least I finally won it in 2018!

1. Pikuniku - [9/10] about 4 hours 30 minutes, Jan 30th
2. Resident Evil 2 - [10/10] about 10 hours, Feb 17th
3. Ape Out - [9/10] 2 hours 15 minutes, March 6th
4. Donkey Kong 64 - [7/10] 24 hours, March 11th
5. Baba is You - [10/10] 10 hours, March 16th

Well. I sure haven't posted any updates basically all year. I didn't manage the 52 for the second time, oops. Too much stuff to do, and I did a poor job of keeping track of playtimes. Anyhow, here's my update:

6. Hypnospace Outlaw - [9/10] March 22nd
Incredible and bizarre game. Absolutely amazing at creating a fun and surprisingly believable little world on a miniature fake early internet. One of the most memorable and fun experiences I've had in games altogether.

7. Yoshi's Crafted World - [8/10] April 6th
Played the entire thing co-op and had a great time. Honestly a very good Yoshi game, and while it's disappointing that modern Yoshi games always have to have a very bland soundtrack, at least it had pretty solid level design and a lot of fun gimmicks in its levels. As a co-op game it's fantastic, and there's surprisingly a lot of content in here.

8. Hitman Season 1 - [10/10] April 10th
9. Hitman 2 - [10/10] April 28th
The amount of ways you can approach the levels in these games is actually insane. Some of the funniest games I've ever played, and I don't know if they're intended to be but it doesn't matter because they're so good at what they do.

10. Super Mario 64 Randomized - May 14th
Definitely wanna try out a more completed version of this randomizer later, but this was a fun way to revisit an old favorite with a lot of weird twists.

11. Ape Escape 2 - [5/10] May 15th
I actually kinda really hated this. It has stuff I did really enjoy about it, but it all too frequently felt unresponsive and clunky, and that's not even really the control scheme's fault. I wanted to like it, I really did, but it just didn't land with me at all.

12. Halo 1 - [10/10] May 26th
Played it co-op with my girlfriend for her first time ever playing it. Halo campaigns are always fun.

13. Banjo-Tooie - [9/10] June 6th
Played Banjo Tooie both because I never got around to finishing it and because I was hoping for Banjo to be announced for Smash Ultimate. Well, I got both of what I wanted, so that was especially satisfying.

14. Super Mario Maker 2 - [9/10] July 25th
The campaign was a really great addition to Mario Maker with a ton of creative levels. I just wish I had more time to try making levels of my own.

15. Deltarune - [9/10] August 22nd
For some reason I didn't really want to play this, but I finally did and I loved it. No idea why I was weird about it in the first place, definitely excited to see what comes next, whenever it releases.

16. Fire Emblem Three Houses - [10/10] August 31st
By far the best brand new Fire Emblem we've received in years. Went Blue Lions, which of the three routes I was originally aware of was the one I thought I was least likely to do first, but it set a high bar that I think will be difficult for the others to surpass. Easily my favorite story and cast since Path of Radiance (I'm ignoring Echoes because it was a remake).

17. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - [10/10] September 22nd
Always wanted to play the original, and I was about to before they announced that this was coming, so I waited a bit. An immediate favorite Zelda game for me, easy top 3 instantaneously.

18. Untitled Goose Game - [9/10] September 24th
About as perfect at what it wants to do as it can be. I think the perfect experience is what I had, not seeing the bells in the pit at the beginning and having the game end on the revelation that the goose does this constantly.

19. Luigi's Mansion 3D - [8/10] October 15th
The controls didn't translate over perfectly, unfortunately, and that made some parts a bit more frustrating than they should've been. However, I loved being able to go back and play this, and it's remarkable that it worked as well as it did.

20. Until Dawn - [8/10] October 25th
A fun cheesy horror movie that you can play. Some of the deaths were very cheap and the ending kinda soured the entire experience, but it was a fun ride while it lasted at least.

21. Thunder in Paradise - October 26th
CD-i games are bizarre. I don't know whether I actually won or even successfully did anything at all? Hulk Hogan sure did yell at me a lot though.

22. Pokemon Sword - [6/10] November 22nd
I love all the new pokemon. The game itself... mediocre and kind of disappointing. But I had a great time making a team of new guys, Falinks especially was a huge surprise.

23. Donkey Kong Country - December 30th
I play this game almost annually, and I realized that December was about to be the only month in 2019 where I didn't beat a game, so I started it up and used it as a solid way to close out the year and the decade.

Shame on me. I did worse than last year in which I completed 23 games. The problem is the big games like AC:Odyssey or Monster Hunter World. Those games suck me in for so long. Now for the year in review I wish I would have played less AC:Odyssey and more other games.
