I'm almost done! Is the post game something you all continue playing? How is it?

I'm toying with it. I've been experimenting with my party, taking on UMs, cleaning up some heart to hearts and having a good time.

HOWEVER!

After hearing people talk fondly about the rare Blade quests I started one tonight and well... I can't say I loved it.

It was the Vess quest in Gormott. To those in the know, did I just stumble on a pretty naff one or is this the norm?

Like, I didn't hate it, but it felt like busy work... I got pretty close to the end of it and just gave up.

So I'm not sure if this is right or not but I'm in the middle of Chapter 4 with the in game clock around 50 hours, but the Switch system only says "over 25 hours."

Is that typical for Chapter 4? How long is this game??

The Vess quest isn't that great.

Game clock is probably wrong, it's bugged and sometimes counts in sleep mode.

Lmao a unique was in the way in the walk way out of Fonsett. I went for him and was getting him down to half health, and then I knocked him off. The game gave me the win and Zenobia's ability :)

I just did the Vess quest last night. The narrative element of it is very sweet and touching. But boy they have you running all over the place, lol.

I like that Vess herself looks like '80s anime, though. It's a bit jarring but I appreciate that they represented that style.

She's designed by Kia Asamiya, whose most well-known work is probably Martian Sucessor Nadesico. So it makes sense that her design has more of an old-school aesthetic to it.

Just finished Chapter 1 and I have a question. Is this game kind of awesome or is it just me? If I had a minor MINOR request it would be that Pyra was a bit more tough. She sometimes can be a little...helpless? That's way too strong of a descriptor for her....Maybe it bugs me more that Rex is so aggressive and "I'll protect you!" in scenes, and that should be Pyra for me.

Pyra personallity is intended to be passive/ mellow, you later meet people with strongers personalities

just got approved to ERA so i thought i'd drop by here since i have been following this OT for a while.

I finished the game mid december but wanted to offer a few thoughts.

  • It took me about 110 hours to finish the game with a fair few side quests. i never usually stick with games that long so its fair to say i liked XC2 quite a bit.
  • XC2 was both occasionally incredibly brilliant and incredibly frustrating, overall it was probably more frustrating then good but with 110 total hours that still equates to a whole lot of good
  • The simplified battle system was great, it felt like an Arkham take on a JRPG ATB system once it gets going. I hope it gets reused/copied by future games
  • The writing had its moments but was ultimately too convoluted. There is an amazing X men inspired story inside XC2 that never realizes its full potential
  • The opening chapter especially does a great job evoking a Jurassic Park meets Jules Vern tone combined with the whimsy of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
  • When the game started to set up the Malos v Mythra conflict i started audibly cheering in hope that XC2 was going to pay off on some of the promise of the FF Versus 13 trailer with a twist. In some ways XC2 does pay off on those themes/Idea's but never completely
  • Rex is the worst, especially with all the foreshadowing and Arthurian mythos that is needlessly surrounding his character and never paid off on.
  • Party members 2 and 5 are the best especially 5. anytime you manage to condense/combine what makes both Flynn Ryder (Tangled) and Goro Majima (Yakuza) beloved characters you have done a great job
  • Party member 4 was the true hero of my play through. I had them set up as an agility tank from fairly early on and with the right augments the basically Solo'd chapters 6-8 including some of the most difficult boss fights in the game
Have a few more thoughts that i might drop into the spoiler thread at some point

Oh man, that makes more sense. Sucks it's glitched though.

According to mine i've played for over 150 hours. I'll have to compare it to the Switch's clock to see what's real.

The World Tree has been very annoying. Enemies with oodles of reinforcements, awful enemy gangs, those motorcycle guys who keep toppling you. Ugh. Plus that noise that sounds like a ringing in your ears that plays in the region in lieu of music.

I'll be glad to put this one behind me.

Trying to bond Boreas, Adenine, or Dahlia to Nia. That's the next target. What element is Aegeon?

Aegeon uses the water element.

I liked the music there :( Especially when the guitar kicks in.

We can not be friends man, how is rex bad??

Per the Convoluted opinion, it just felt like the game was constantly adding idea's that served to act as references. They were good idea's and well done references. I just personally felt that a more focused approach to the games strongest narrative themes would have served it better. IE the Arthurian stuff with Rex, where even the name Rex means King in Latin. yet aside from one moment in chapter 6 (or is it 7?) it never pays off. especially the ending. It sets up the story as the tale of a lost king with a magic sword, yet Rex mainly stays more as the classic Adventurer/Romantic hero. There's obviously nothing wrong with that. I would just personally prefer a more focused take since those archetypes are occasionally at odds.

How is Rex bad?

I just didn't like him, I thought there was some dissonance between who others said he was and how he actually acted. It bothered me that everyone kept acting like he was this savy selfless dreamer when his actions just made him come across as a selfish idiot. The plot was overall pretty good and did its best to make Rex somewhat redeemable, but i never could see what everyone saw in Rex

Wow... I hated this game at first but it's probably tied with Zelda as my goty now. There's plenty of negatives. I think some of the writing and character designes are a bit too much ( Poppi, Pyra, etc.), the lip sync is pretty bad (I know it's not a western game but still), and the resolution/blurriest is distracting. The game also starts really slow, the rng crystal mechanic can get annoying, the story is often predictable, and even the non offensive character designs can often still come out badly (Rex and a lot of the villains like the red glasses guy). But as someone who hasn't played a major jrpg like this in a while, this game is really good. I'm nearing the end of chapter 5 and everything is just coming together. I love the music and overall art direction of the game. I also really am starting to enjoy the combat. Most of all though, I like how long the game is, and the fact that it's staying pretty strong through dozens of hours worth of playtime.

One negative I think that really hurts the game is the mysogynistic or just plain dumb character designs. There are points where the game tries to get serious and say something "deep", but a lot of that is lost when a girl dressed as a housemaid is involved in the same scene.

If they have ??.??.?? It means is not time based but you have to do somethinf, Zenobia quest tells you where to meet her, for you quest that is Azami, go to the port in Fonsa Myma
Lol I'm near the port right now cause I saw the quest icon, thought it was for something else, and was reminded of the merc mission.

Holy moly. I just noticed the OT title. I JUST got past those guys last night. I went back and forth between being annoyed as shit to laughing out loud to being annoyed as shit.

How do you start Finch's sidequest? The affinity chart says it starts in Goldmouth Wheelhouse but no quest markers there. Do I need to get to affinity level 5?

The soundtrack really is incredible. At chapter 5, I think indoline day is a real standout.

I too finally finished the game last night, with a mind-numbing 235 hour play time. I think this is the longest I've ever played any game, damn. o_O

I guess I can say I've close to 100% the game now. I have all the rare blades, most of them with max affinity (except for those with food-related affinities that take forever to make... looking at you Vess), and have beaten all the Level 100+ monsters I could find. I think I've done all the quests and all the heart-2-hearts as far as I can tell too (unless I missed any miss-able ones). I may have added more hours to my playthrough than the most other players since I insisted of getting all the rare blades around Chapter 5. It's doable even with low luck and idea points, but boy did it take awhile. I know its easier to do post game when you can farm legendary medals and stack three luck+ blades, but seemed pointless to me to get a rare blade when there's nothing much you can do with then anymore.

The game has issues, mostly with the interface. It's simply not as polished as most of its peers.... I mean, would it be so hard to keep a book of monsters, their drops, and item encyclopedia or something? Most of the time consuming stuff of this game is looking for things, which will take ages because the game never tracks where the hell this monster/ingredient/salvage material is found.

Also, I have to mention the terrible, terrible voice acting. Feels very amateurish really... its weird that most of the English voice actors speak in a really monotone manner and can't put any emotion into their lines (see Rex's "Pyraaaaaaaaa" which gets repeated every other cutscene and still sounds unintentionally hilarious because of how bad its delivered). But you can't really play with Japanese vocals either, since you'll miss most of those miscellaneous battle/event lines which are great.

Still, despite the flaws, I loved every minute of it. I've dropped games for much more minor annoyances, so it's testament that this game manage to hook me as it did. I'm now anxiously awaiting the extra stuff that's coming this couple of months. And yes, I NEED that soundtrack, DAMN.

Nintendo is terrible at releasing soundtracks, it's baffling. So many mediums to do so, so many good soundtracks to release, so much money to be made.
