This is definetly a multi-ep arc for the Mirror Universe, but it may end slightly before the end of the season... they will get back to their universe, and clean up whatever bullshit remains of the Klingon war stuff cuz reasons with L'Rell and Tyler.

Listened to the RedLetterMedia mid-season review (which is really a half stealth Orville review as well), and Mike had an idea that I thought would be really neat (but, they admit, they probably wouldn't do):

That they are now in the normal Trek universe. Everything we've seen in so far on the show IS the Mirror universe.

And have
all the other series and movies (except Kelvinverse) be the mirror universe?
Eh seems like just change for the sake of change

But that just raises the question of how they could possibly have made all the changed undetectable to federation scanners?

Well they did after Dr Culber did deeper scans, the scaring was originally mistaken as kligon torture

But that just raises the question of how they could possibly have made all the changes undetectable to federation scanners. Like did they replace all his organs with human organs? How does any of that work with a Klingon brain?

I guess they could have taken the parts from the actual Tyler? I feel like they kinda messed up doing this whole surgery transformation thing, I know we've had them in other Star Treks but it was only superficial.

This should be the show from now on...

And apparently the longer they are in the Mirror Universe, pretending to be these dark versions of themselves... they are coming close to losing themselves in these roles... as evidenced by the preview of the next episode

Another excellent episode and yet more confirmation that Tilly is the best character in the damn show

I'm glad to see that Discovery is firmly on the Enterprise side of mirror universe episodes rather than the absolutely awful Deep Space Nine mirror offerings.

I really don't know what to think of this show.
It seems intriguing enough to continue but I'm starting to hate everyone on this show.
really miss the old bridge crew family dynamic of the old shows. all these intrigues, lies, secrets are kinda getting on my nerves

That would really subvert expectations. I mean it would be awful, but at least it subverts expectations.

I don't think they're interested in telling a show about family. Your main relationship is between an emotionally stunted woman and a Klingon spy who murders the only gay person in the Star Trek universe. lol

This is amazing, amazing Star Trek to me.

Love the mix of drama, humour, sadness, action... the Captain 'Killy' bits are so enjoyable...the Burnett/Conor scenes :O Dr Colbert :( :(

It's very different to the 'family-ness' of TNG, which I still adore, and which will probably always be my 'home' Trek, but this is just demands your attention in its own way,

One minor thing I want to give credit to is how much better the physical choreography is during fights. The fight in the turbolight was short but nice. It felt impactful.

Outside of TOS physical action isn't generally the most important thing in Trek but it's always been terrible and bland and just the worst.. It's nice that when they do action scenes, they put in the effort to make it actually competent.

Can we give them credit for not using the double-clasped back hand hit they do to knock people out like in the other Trek shows

To be fair, I think they kill more people on this show than they have in all of DS9, and that show also featured an all out war. lol
Hell, they spend several episodes trying to negotiate with the Dominion in order to avoid killing random Jem Hadar grunts that no one cares about.

I really hate when people try to push this idea because it shows a complete and utter lack of understanding of what the Mirror universe is. Last night's episode should make clear why "theories" like this make no sense and have never made any damn sense. It's not even clever. People that claim to be Trek fans should know better.

The show is visually updated and altered for a new era of TV. It's also not attempting to mimic the template that TNG had. People need to simply accept this and let the show be its own thing and allow it to go. I get some people want more TNG as it is a known thing. Guess what you can go watch TNG, all 7 damn seasons of it and its movies. It was remastered. You can go watch the Orville because a number of the people that work on TNG work on that. You have your option. Allow Trek to grow and be something new for a new era so it can live and grow and not continue to be stagnant. Cause that old formula is what caused the last series to be canceled and why we had a decades and change long gap between it and Discovery.

It's clever in that it's one way you can explain away why Lorca is considered the best Starfleet captain in the entire fleet despite his disposition and seeming lack of ethics.

That was a fun episode. I did have a worry that doing a Mirror episode before had a few seasons to know these characters wouldnt work but having them play their mirror selves is a neat twist.

Oh and Captain Killy

How does this universe where humans are an imperialistic violent, might makes right type society somehow being the prime universe make sense in anyway?

Even with the Mirror Lorca theory, the implication is that they swapped places at some point, not that this version rose through the ranks.

I don't think firehaw12 is serious in that assertion. I think is he just taking a shot at Discovery based on his posts on this page. Which is fine. Opinions and all that.

To be fair, I don't subscribe to the Mirror Universe theory inasmuch as I think the Mirror Universe is a dumb gimmick that was ruined in DS9 just like the Borg was ruined on Voyager. But that's just what people keep saying.

The other explanation is that Lorca is a Section 31 agent, except it runs counter to everything we know about Section 31 in that they try their best not to call attention to themselves.

Lorca immediately jumping to "lets blend in" lends to the mirror theory if you assume thats exactly what Mirror Lorca did when he arrived in the main universe.

But even then it is still a stretch and they would need to nail that landing if they go there because it seems too shaky.

Someone previously said that

this arc is only 2 episodes and that they're going back to the Klingon War after next week, so I don't expect that to be a thing.

It's just one of those things people talked about - even some people here (or perhaps it was on the old board, but same thing I suppose).
I think there was that one episode in the first half where Lorca looks into a mirror and everyone went crazy. lol

So, I've not seen any of Discovery since the first episode, but judging from this thread it sounds like it's gotten better?

It's gotten into its plotline where as the first 2 episodes are almost strictly world-building. That being said, I thought the world building was fine in the first two episodes.

So to answer your question it probably depends on what a person expects from Trek if its gotten "better". Some people love it. Some people are in the middle. Some people don't like it. It's like anything. There is a diversity of opinion.

We do need to see what's happening with Mirror Discovery in "Prime" universe sometime... and from their perspective :)

Seen a lot of crazy shit on this board, but someone not liking the Double Axe Handle Attack of Doom is something else. It's the best move, especially in combination with the Dreaded Wall-Assisted Butt Splash of Anguish.

Yeah the pilot is a bit of a misstep but I think it found its legs after a few episodes.

Like... if you take the 9 episodes of the first half of the season I would say 4 of those are real good.

The episodes that have the least to do with the whole Klingon War thing are the best of the bunch though. Just makes we want that to get over with and they can re-balance the format to be a little more story of the week with over arching elements and not the other way around.

For DS9: they made a Defiant ship in the Mirror universe, but the Prime Defiant never crossed over.

The Defiant referenced in this episode is a Constitution class ship, as referenced from a TOS and ENT era that was involved in crossing over into the Mirror Universe.
