I was actually enjoying Discovery and even defending it online, but then meh it just meh I skipped one week and now don't have the strenght to go back.
I like it, in theory, but something about actually watching the show is kind of painful.

I like Mike's theory about the Mirror Universe, it would actually justify Discovery's existence.

So of course it wont happen.

I did too. It gets shit on a lot, and it's absolutely true that the characters are made out of cardboard, but there is a lot of cool stuff in that movie. Some of the creature design in that movie was really neat.

the ideal viewing scenario for any movie is to also have Seinfeld playing on your phone

Now that we have heard their opinion on movies no one cares about (aka non-superhero blockbusters/Star Wars), I hope we can finally get to Fuck you, it's January/Year. Even better if they manage to get it out thus month. Bunch of hacks...

Can someone spoiler me on the infamous scene in Gerard's Game that made Jay almost barf?

http://www.vulture.com/2017/10/lets-talk-about-that-degloving-scene-in-geralds-game.html

After pulling and prying and attempting to yank herself free, Jessie realizes she's only got one choice left. Those cuffs aren't coming off as long as the skin is on her hand, and blood sure makes an effective lubricant. So she willingly degloves herself. Record scratch — what? Yes, that word means what you think it means. After a few days spent watching her dead husband decompose on the floor, fending off a hungry dog that's waiting for its next red meat entrée, and exposing the demons in her psychological closet, Jessie realizes she won't make it through one more night and takes extreme measures to free herself. Her one blessed reprieve has been a glass of water that Gerald left within reach before dying, and after shattering the glass, she goes through her own 127 Hours moment, cutting a Y incision up her wrist and into her palm, then forcing her hand down through the cuff as the skin peels upward like a latex glove coming off.

I was on board with Gerald's Game until the end. That is a bit trash.

And how graphic THAT scene was indeed caught me off guard :D

I could have saved so much time tonight if I had watched
that episode of Futurama
instead of A Ghost Story

It's a shame they don't review better movies in half in the bag and save them only for the end of the year wrap up. Mike spoke wonderfully about why a ghost story is good and works with its filmmaking and choices. Also, it was really interesting to hear Jay talk about the killing of a sacred deer as if he wasn't sure if it was a comedy or not. It's totally a comedy in the same way dogtooth and the lobster were in that it is very dark very self serious and you're supposed to laugh at its darkness and self seriousness. The ending that Jay does not reveal is totally goofy and how it's presented and yet still very realistic in the confines of what the movie sets up. Only thing I disagree with is Mike's explanation and description of the ending of the Florida Project. I think he's missing a lot of what the movie was setting up in regards to a child's view point, and what the ending meant in relationship to that and the dreamlike quality of it.

A lot of people don't like the ending of The Florida Project, because it literally and figuratively feels tacked on.

I wonder if people would have felt the same way if Baker was allowed to bring in a real camera crew and shot that scene without using iPhones.

This was a story of a bunch of deadbeat prostitute baby mama's on welfare, stealing, smoking, drugs, who didn't take care of their children, let them run all over the place, cussing stealing, destroying property, no guidance. These people are the scum of the earth. FINALLY DCF came and took the delinquent kid. Horrible movie, not worth the time or money

Absolutely one of the worst movies of ALL time. The dialogue, the plot, the characters, are all pointless and ridiculous. After watching this trash, the description "heart stopping thriller," makes me ill. There is nothing "heart stopping" about this film, it is not intelligent, clever or scary--it is just garbage. The story has zero redeeming quality. There is no moral, or point, to any of it. Do not waste your time watching. And, do not waste your money to rent, or buy it. What this film teaches, is any actor will do almost any movie, as long as the price is right. This thing didn't last a week in theatres, and it should not last a week in rentals. I can only hope it dies on the vine, and the people who make crap like this go broke.

I know there are some that didn't like the ending, but I strongly disagree with them just as I do with the critics at the time who didn't like or appreciate the ending of There Will Be Blood.

If someone wants to criticize the people looking into the camera, I can get that. But, the choice to go digital feels appropriate since the entire sequence is shot as a dream. It's not just a switch from film to digital, but it is purposefully blown out and distorted and blurred. There's no attempt to make it visually connected because the movie is now allowing a child to have a fantasy divorced from the realism of her life prior to that one moment. And, the movie stays with the viewpoint of the child for most of the film so it isn't a sudden shift in perspective either. Considering Baker probably knew before filming he wouldn't have permits or permission to film at Magic Kingdom, it's not a quick "well, let's just do it on an iphone", and it's important to remember that Tangerine was already shot entirely on an iPhone so his decision to use film and then switch to blatant digital is a choice.

It's a cathartic release from the misery of the movie and the poor future ahead of that little girl. And, because it is just a dream, it's even more heartbreaking. He also uses an orchestral version of the song "Celebration" to underscore it, again in contrast with the original pop version playing over the opening credits (as well as the subtle nod of what "celebration" is to Disney.

I think the ending is bold and works.

Also, as an aside, the car wash gag (pun) in Tangerine is great.

Oh yeah, I agree. I'm just surprised that people seemed to hate it. But then again I'm also surprised people hate the new Star Wars, so yeah. lol

I liked the new star wars but I'm clearly not seeing it through a critical lense. I can't disagree with their complaints during the review though. I just don't put star wars on a pedestal as a sacred franchise. The prequels were bad because they were also boring though.

I thought the GG scene wasn't too bad. I knew it was coming and I expected something even worse, though, so I guess that might have made it more palatable for me.
