I lost faith in this happening a while ago. If it happens great, if not we still have a good team going forward.
Before Katrina there was one Spanish-speaking league at City Park. It was called Islano and had 10 teams. Now there are three leagues with a total of 46 teams and discussions about their matches fill much of the radio show Carbajal hosts with Marco Piedy, the former president of Islano who runs Champion League, the newest of the three leagues. The demand for soccer in the new New Orleans is so big that Piedy regularly arranges to bring in big professional teams from Central America to play exhibitions at City Park's 26,500-seat Tad Gormley Stadium. These matches draw thousands of people even if sports fans in the rest of New Orleans are oblivious to their existence.
I picked Cruz Azul a few years ago just based on their relative lack of advertising on their kits and decent logo (yes, I know Cruz Azul is a Mexican cement company, so it's kind of like the RBNY/Leipzig/Salzberg situation.) I'm not too sure, but I think they have their own broadcasting deal since I almost never see them on the cable channels I get.Since Liga MX is starting up, what's the team to follow? Having zero knowledge, in the past I rooted for Pumas because of the logo. But I'm thinking of following a little closer this year. Proximity-wise, Club Tijuana is closest and has a upper tier logo so I'll probably go with them.
New Orleans would be a pretty awesome soccer town if they ever got a team. There's already a really awesome party and music culture down there, imagine if it was brought to a supporter's section. Could be a crazy atmosphere if the team got popular.I wish an investment group would seriously look at New Orleans as a market. We've got a gigantic tract of unused land less than a mile from the Warehouse District and CBD, and barely over a mile away from the French Quarter. Our metro area isn't very large, but that's a prime location to pull in an audience, and they're soon extending the riverside street car line that runs along the French Quarter to that location.
Plus, our city is very attractive for sports fans interested in going to away games, which is why we get so many Superbowls and College Bowl games despite the Superdome being one of the oldest stadiums in the NFL. We'd easily draw more people than places like Dallas that have stadiums beyond the furthest suburbs.
Edit:
Additionally, I used to work at a local alcohol importer, and they started importing Honduran beers because supposedly Jefferson Parish (part of the New Orleans metro area) has the largest number of Honduran immigrants of any county/parish in the entire country. They regularly have friendlies from South American and Mexican teams at Tad Gormley Stadium in City Park because of this.
The Guardian: In the New New Orleans, an International Soccer Player Hides in Plain Sight:
We saw a lot of immigrants move to the area looking for work during reconstruction after Katrina. They've mostly stuck around.
Plus you'd be like the only team in that region. I'd rather see a New Orleans team than a third Texas team. Three teams in Texas makes no damn sense. MLS needs to get in that city.
It's beyond stupid. Why was he not called for the last friendly? It's seriously mind-boggling how incompetent USSF is. Not only did they not call him up, they apparently flat-out ignored him as well.

To them we win or lose based on the size of the budget surplus. The USSF is dumb as hell. Just a bunch of old men feeling secure in their bubble of wealth and being surrounded by people unwilling and/or incapable to challenge their ineptitude.
There isn't any sense of urgency because they just don't fucking get it.
Ousted to DC is official. Take care of The Great Dane, DC bros
"We felt as an organization that we needed to make some decisions for the longer term and our long-term philosophy, looking at growth of the men's national team program and the youth development program. In terms of that review, we determined that we had the ideal candidate internally in John Herdman," Canada Soccer president Steve Reed explained in a one-on-one interview with Sportsnet.
"We thought now was the time to look to John to lead the men's program and emulate what he's done with the women's program."
Asked to characterize the terms of Zambrano's departure, whether he was fired or he left by mutual consent, Reed said: "It was an organizational decision. He has departed from Canada Soccer. We wish him the best of luck."
"It's an honour to work on the men's side, and to be able to stay in Canada, as well. As a family man, we've settled here, we've lived here for six years. My son and daughter are pretty settled, and with other opportunities there was a chance that we might've had to leave Canada. … This is good news that we can establish our roots here and pushing the game forward, albeit on the men's side," Herdman told Sportsnet in a one-on-one interview.
So Herdman kind of implies here that he might have left the CanWNT for "other opportunities"
maybe the decision was more about Canada Soccer wanting to keep Herdman in the system rather than let him leave entirely, so they decided to give him Zambrano's job
Hard to say what went on behind the scenes. They obviously like Herdman a lot, maybe he pushed for it, wasn't satisfied with anything but the senior men's job and Canada Soccer relented. Well they aren't exactly the most well run organization, lol.Maybe, but like then he should've just been named the U23 coach or whatever. They're giving him probably the most noteworthy position in the CSA, because they don't want him to leave? Just all kinds of weird.
Also from the CSA's statement:
This sounds very, very strange.

One well-place source told Sportsnet that Zambrano's tenure as coach was viewed as "a disaster" within some quarters of Canada Soccer.
Yikes.Grain of salt and all that, but people on the Voyageurs forum (a forum of Canadian soccer supporters) are saying that Zambrano was not getting along with anyone at the CSA, "was rocking the boat", and the CSA wanted someone who knows how to work with the CSA, like Herdman. Basically, a Yes-Man. Fuck the CSA if this is accurate.
EDIT: Found this in the Sportsnet article:
hooooly shit this is nuts
Well, I feel for Zambrano if this is what it looks like, but on the other hand Herdman has certainly done well with the women. I don't think it's a bad move overall, just seems out of left field. At this point I'm not terribly concerned for the women's team since they promoted a former assistant, so hopefully things will continue to go smoothly over there.
There's no doubt that this is a bigger blow to the men's team than the women's team. Women's team have, and will continue to, contend. Men's team was in a bad spot before, and is probably worse off now.
Another layer of the bonkers onion that is this situation; seems as though the players weren't warned of this at ALL:
Isn't Rongen the guy who caused Subotic to tell USSF to fuck off?
